Cock-a-doodle-doo, said the old rooster outside Flickerbush's window. Cock-a-doodle-doo! Flickerbush smiled and hopped out of bed. It was time to go to work! She brushed out her fur and pulled on her boots, knowing that it was much better to be safe than sorry. She did not want to get muddy today. Happy with how she was dressed, Flickerbush stepped out of her home and into the bright morning sunshine.

It was very hard work being a barn cat and she had so many chores! Where to start, where to start... She conlisted her chore list for the day. Tend to the field, gather chicken eggs, check the goose pond, give the horses hay. Well, then, she would start in the field and make her way back to the horse barn by the end of the day. Happy with her plan, Flickerbush folded her chore list and set out towards the cow gate that opened up into her pasture.

Tending her field was a tough job! She had to scoop and shovel and cut and sow. She had to keep the grass a healthy length for her horses and cows - too long and their legs would get all tangled up and too short, they wouldn't have any grass to eat! Just as Flickerbush was getting ready to take a break from all the hard work she was doing, she heard soft nicker. She pushed aside soem of the tall grass to her right. It was a baby horse!

"Oh, hello!" Flickerbush said. "You must be lost. Where is your mama?"

The foal neighed in response. Flickerbush frowned.

"I see. Well, why don't you come with me and we'll find her together!" And so, along they went. Flickerbush was more than happy to help out her new friend and her new friend was more than happy to pick at the tall grass along the way. They trotted along with Flickerbush leading the way, her short tail high in the air like a flag. At the very edge of the field, next to the cow gate, they heard another noise. Honk, went the noise. Honk, honk, honk! Flickerbush peered down and moved aside the weeds along the fence to find a little goose!

"Hello, little gosling." Flickerbush said. "Are you lost too?"

The gosling shook its head and motioned to its left leg. Flickerbush nodded. "Oh dear! You're hurt. Why don't you ride on my shoulders and we'll go find something to make you feel better?"
