Truffle had always wanted siblings. She'd been born an only kitten, which seemed about in line with her luck since then. It wasn't the most common for a litter, after all - especially not in her family. Apparently her mother couldn't even think of any of their family members coming from single kitten litters in her lifetime. Maybe other than cousin Toad, but nobody had seen him in years. He could've been dead, for all they knew.

But Truffle was less worried about being the family "bad omen" than she was miserable she didn't have siblings of her own. Her aunts and uncles and cousins were over to visit all the time, and she could see how close littermates could be, even after living apart all these years. Well… other than Aunt Freckle, but nobody spoke of her much anymore, either.

Of course, it wasn't all bad. She was lucky to have a pawful of friends to practice her magic with; something other cats usually did with their littermates. Sure, that meant that she had a bit less time to practice, when she had to wait for times they could meet up - but it also meant her parents allowed her more time to go out and play. She'd heard stories of cousins being trapped in their homes by their families until they were deemed practiced enough to go out and play - sometimes to even go outside at all, just to be safe.

Still, given that the stories were told by said cousins, Truffle had plenty reason not to believe a word of it. She usually assumed most things her cousins said were exaggerated, if not flat out made up entirely - especially the older ones, who thought she was gullible just because she was a kitten. She supposed, as annoying as it was, it was at least the closest thing she'd probably have to a sibling relationship.

Besides, there were bigger concerns facing the siblings in their community - supposedly ones that hit her family harder than others, though she wasn't sure how much she should believe those, either. And, of course, the concerns themselves were just rumours. Nobody could really prove whatever was causing cats to disappear was targeting those with siblings in particular - most cats around here had at least one. It just made for a more dramatic story, a way to scare everyone into worrying and overthinking and spreading gossip. Truffle didn't… really believe it.

Okay, well, she did. Of course she did, it was all anybody had been talking about for months. She didn't have to worry about it, though, did she? She didn't have siblings. There was nobody to worry about, much less herself.

Of course, her friends did have siblings - most cats did, after all. But she'd never stopped to consider that, despite her own siblingless complaints, those cats felt as close as one might be with their littermates.

She didn't stop to consider it until too late. Until one was already gone.
