It was a mistake. Probably the biggest mistake I'd ever made.


It all started in the hunting grounds, when I was hunting. All of a sudden, I see my enemy, Angelvoice, crashing through the bushes, tumbling down the hills and then running deep into the forest.

She didn't see me, so I followed her. She went over to a tiny pond of water to drink. I hid behind a tree, and she still couldn't see me.


She excitedly hopped ahead of me

“No, Thymeskip, you can’t mean that!”

“I said what I said, Sharkskin—”

Stormpitch stopped in her tracks and hunkered down into the horsetails, eyes wide and ears pricked. She recognized the voices instantly; they belonged to Thymeskip and Sharkskin, the leader and second-in-command of the Timelost.

From the desperation in Sharkskin’s voice, and the exhaustion in Thymeskip’s, whatever was being discussed was serious. But what was the topic? Curiosity warred with propriety; was it right to stay and keep listening? Or would it be better to pretend as if she had never been here?

A crunching of paws through the fallen ferns woke Stormpitch from her reverie. In her deliberation, the two high-ranking cats had continued to walk; if she ran now, she would be seen. The hunter froze, and hoped her coat would keep her camouflaged in the mottled light as she listened.

“You can’t… What will happen to us, then? The clan? We will have kits to watch for!”
Sharkskin’s voice was pleading as she followed behind Thymeskip.

“I know, I know. But that doesn’t change it. Without spirits to ask, no, I don’t know if the Fogsense will pass to a successor!” Thymeskip answered, equal parts frustration and fear clearly audible in their voice.

The Fogsense. Stormpitch felt her heart leap into her throat; the Timelost lived and died by that sense. How else would the clan know when they would be transported to a new time, if the Fogsense disappeared? It would be disastrous!

Regret flashed through her mind, chasing raw terror as she waited for the two leaders to move on. Why had she stayed? Stormpitch kicked herself for freezing in place, wishing so desperately she hadn’t heard what she had heard. How could she face the future now?

Flickerskip happily walks back to camp, contentment quickly slipping away as voices coming into earshot. He hears his name once, then again. His eyes narrow, recognizing a voice. Marblenose. His enemy.

The tom never ceases to quip right back at him. He's not sure why, but it seems Marblenose just doesn't like him. So obviously Flickerskip can't like him either, although he often oddly gives Flickerskip cool crafting materials and tasty prey. Probably just another jab, Flickerskip thinks. And now, Marblenose talking about him!

Eyes narrowed in suspicion, he inches forward to hear what Marblenose is saying to the other cat. Probably something bad.

"He doesn't seem to even treat me a little differently," Marblenose is saying - wait, does he sound almost... sad?
"Flickerskip is so talented and calm and kind and I... I just don't know how to tell him how I feel, you know?"

The other cat (Flickerskip can't quite make out who it is), nods their head.
"Don't you flirt with him like all the time though? You two go back and forth about everything! And it doesn't seem like you or him aren't enjoying yourselves."

"Am I really that obvious?" Marblenose says with a light laugh. "Well, I mean, I may feel that way, but I don't think he does. Oh well, maybe we aren't meant to be. Let's... let's just go back to camp now."

"Oh yeah," the other cat chuckles, "he'll be back soon!"

Marblenose shoves the cat playfully as they head back to camp, leaving Flickerskip with very muddled emotions. His face flushes. Oh. They aren't enemies after all. But that means- well, Marblenose isn't bad to look at- wait, what?! He's your enemy!

Flickerskip should not have heard that conversation. But maybe... maybe a tiny part of him is glad he did.

Hare froze, the damp moss in his mouth cushioning his shock as he tried to clamp his jaw shut to stop himself from squeaking in surprise. He inhaled sharply through his nose and waited for Ivy to say another word.

The medicine cat den wasn't as empty as Hare thought.

Ivy spoke again. "I'm pregnant, and... And you're the father, Talon."

What in Starclan's name?! Hare nearly started screaming. What sort of conversation was this?! The tribe's leader having an affair with Hare's mentor, their medicine cat? How many rules was this conversation breaking? Was over-hearing this going to condemn Hare to the Dark Forest? Oh, dear...

He slowly backed away from the medicine cat den's entrance, his eyes glossy with fear... The tension was so thick, he felt like he could lean on it to catch his breath.

"... See, you did it again! You didn't respond. Hm, how are you going to listen to the words when Evening tells you this for real? You've been trying for kits for a while now, and yet you're still so shocked!"

Hare blinked. Huh?

"I know, I'm sorry Ivy... Thank you for letting me practice on you.. Oh, I don't know what to do..." Talon sighed heavily. Hare perked his ears, his heart thudding. Clumps of moss slowly fell onto his front paws, dampening the ground and fur around it.

So... they were practicing? Hare inhaled deeply, relieved until a slither of moss caught and tickled at the back of his throat. He coughed, choking. "Geuch!" He spat.

The moss went flying, and as he caught his breath, Ivy appeared before him.

"What have I said about eavesdropping, Hare?! And look, the moss is disgusting now!"
