To swear ones life to another is both an honorable task, and an arduous one.

Honeyfang had lived recently knowing only claws and teeth, fighting for ones life and trusting the words of another as much as you trust a fox with a kit. Being alone was safe, it meant that no one could heart you in any way that truly mattered- your heart was safe. He lived this way for many moons, darting about the woods as though nothing in the world mattered- his existence was pure reckless abandon, his life seemingly mattering little outside of causing some chaos. He had no purpose.

Once he had known peace, warmth. A comfortable place among a small clan, sunning among the rocks and chasing prey through the fields, and ending the day slumbering among the wavering willow tree boughs with his trusted companions. His mother was all Honeyfang had left for family, a dainty chocolate she-cat brimming with love and honor. She taught him lessons of keeping his word, and paying that which is due.

This was, of course, until the day that the dogs showed up.

His clans makeshift camp had settled too close to the twolegs, something he had been adamantly against, and for that they paid the price.

Gnashing jaws, frightful barking, clanmates scattering about like mad, and all while Honeyfang sat unaware during patrol.

This was many, many moons ago. And now he is alone. And that is how it will stay.

Being free of the burden of others is better, he tells himself as he strolls along. It's safer to focus on the survival on just yourself, others will make it harder to stay alive. Leafbare is coming, I have to find a way to stay warm. And fed. And out of the jaws of hungry beasts. Did I already pass this tree? Where have I even wound up? Oh! Is that a bird I hear-

And then, a glint of metal among the trees.

A small, unassuming, wire. With it comes unrelenting pain, white hot fire licking up his legs. The tom yowls, struggling against the unseen foe as though swatting and gnashing will stop the snare from its constant tightening. The stake driven into the ground wiggles but never gives, holding strong against his desperate attempts at survival.

The tom blacks out in his rage, thrashing until his claws find something solid to finally grasp- something... Furry?

Like something straight of a starclan, a blessing stands before his prone form, panting with exertion.

She's sleek and chocolate brown, tabby stripes swirling about her belt, and smiling faintly despite the new trail of blood trickling down her nose from his swat. The light behind the trees seems to frame her perfectly in the moment, and time slows to a crawl as she slinks closer, approaching as though he may snap.

"I can help you, if you hold still."

The words ring in his ears for a moment, and all Honeyfang can manage is a small huff of air as he slumps into the ground, twitching. The she-cat takes this as a sign to proceed, and makes quick work of removing the entangled trap, as though with practiced ease.

"My name is Ripplestar, what can I call you?"

Silence for several moments, the tom staring off into the tree line with hazy amber eyes.

"Ill just call you.. Clumsy. Alright, can you stand clumsy?"

Now this, this was enough to cause the tom to sneer in distaste. He rose on wobbling legs, only to find putting pressure on one of them sent agony searing up his hindquarters- that leg was promptly lifted, his face scrunching in silent pain. Despite this, though, the tom began to limp forwards. He had to leave, this was dangerous, he couldnt stay around her-

"Hey! Not even a thank you? Come here, let me look at that leg-"

"My name is Honeyfang. I do not need your help. Thank you. Goodbye."

Ripplestar appeared taken aback at his hostile response, for only a moment, before she began to lash her tail in discontent. The she-cat stalked forward with purpose, rising to her highest height in order to reach eye level with the stubborn tom before her. She sat stubbornly in front of his path, neck craned upwards defiantly.

"My pleasure, Honeyfang, now you're going to let me look at that! I saved your life! You owe me!"

These words seemed to freeze the tom in place, his eyes widening a fraction-
What had become of him. Turning his back on someone who had offered nothing but help? What would his mother have thought of him?

With this newfound realization weighing heavily upon him, Honeyfang rose and began to wordlessly follow the she cat as she blabbered on and on about how she had heard him yowling like a 'frightened kit' and come running, and he couldnt help but offer a playful roll of his eyes- something she would not let slip past. Smiling knowingly, Ripplestar lead him home to her clan.

The friendship was slow, starting out. Rocky on a good day and downright bitter on a bad one, but the she-cat had wedged her way into his heart well and good once a few moons had passed. Her clan was small, but careful, and this was something that Honeyfang respected deeply- almost as deeply as he had come to respect Ripplefang herself.

A kittypet turned stray turned leader, all in the midst of leafbare by herself. Absolutely admirable, through his eyes.

Honeyfang knew, now, what his purpose in life was.

Protecting this clan, and Ripplestar herself, was his new oath. He would breath his last breath for the clan, without hesitation or question.

When he told Ripplestar of this she had laughed it off, telling him not to be quite so dramatic.

She and the clan had saved his life, and he will die for them all in return. There is no risk he would not take to ensure their safety.

Prompt: It seemed like such a small vow at first. His mother, looking at him with a worried expression after most of their clan had arrived back at camp injured from a fight. "I vow mom, you'll never have to worry about me! I will become the strongest cat ever! Every day, I will find something, someone to fight against. I will hone these claws, and make myself a fighter who can protect everyone!" He puffed up his chest, placing a paw over it, tiny eyes alight with determination.

At first, it was an easy vow to keep. He could start with tiny insects! After he had fought the largest insects, he moved on to lizards. Then frogs, then fish, then birds... until he was grown and realized the next opponents would have to be his size... cats. And so to keep his vow he started to fight other cats, both from inside and out of his clan. Some considered him a bully, but he was sure that once it was clear he had won the opponent was let go. Slowly, then, he ran out of cats. So the next...? Well, he knew it was time to fight dogs.

It was considered suicidal, but he had a vow to keep. And his first few skirmishes gave him many scars... but he had learned from every fight he had ever been in. And eventually it became clear: he could hold his own. Sometimes, he could win. He held his head high, vow upheld. But at what cost? Now most of his own clan was afraid of him and his mom... her last days were coming. What had it all been for? Please... dont be afraid of him. He just wants to help... please dont look at him like that.

there was a prophecy of a dream that the new five leaders would have, and many cats were talking about it. however goldencry wasn’t one of the few who were chosen, but he took pride within helping his clan wherever needed. at that time, all he was a scout who was called the medicine cat den. “you’ve called for me,” goldencry greeted.

“you’ve had the dream, haven’t you?” the medicine cat asked. “this is what our clanmates have been saying.”

“that’s false, and if i have dreamt that dream,” his voice got shaky. he truly wished to have dream that dream. “i would have rushed to tell you as you know that i’ll be willing to doing anything for this clan.”

eye glimmered with an opportunity from the medicine cat who raised an eyebrow at what goldencry claimed. “anything for our clan? are you truly sure of this?”

“of course, i vowed it as a warrior and now scout for fogclan,” goldencry confirmed. he never took these vows lightly especially when talking to the current leader of the clan who held the only authority for the clan.

“good because i have a deal with you.”

“a deal?”

a cruel smirk formed on the face of the medicine cat as they said, “i know of your little fantasy of being able to help your clanmates by leading them all, right?”

“that is correct but starclan didn’t choose me at all,” goldencry said. he knew something was brewing within the medicine cat’s mind.

“and, you are sure disappointed by that. starclan glanced over you, a scout who was always willing to put his life on the line for his clan, in exchange for a loner who doesn’t know out clanmates’ struggles.”

“where are you going with this?”

“i dreamt of fire as well the night that prophecy was delivered. some of the cats who dreamt that dream will burn this clan down and take all of us with them,” the medicine cat growled. their claws scratched into the ground, leaving long and deep trail marks after them, and it was clear an anger was brewing. “so, are you understanding what i what to suggest?”

“not really besides that some loners will destroy this clan if they get the leadership position, and that you hid that from us to ensure something,” goldencry spoke shakily. the clan was his home and he just couldn’t let some loners take it down after all the hard work him and his clanmates had down to build it up again. the medicine cat’s words of a destroyed fogclan twisted around his mind like vines until he was convinced to help. “what is this deal?”

“you need to fake the dream, that’s all. you’ll be preventing the fire prophecy from happening and the clan will be safe.”

“but, that will be going against starclan,” goldencry protested. he just couldn’t lie to the entire clan, and they’ll hate him if they found out.

“i’m your leader and you said you vowed to do what is needed to protect the clan,” the medicine cat said as they twisted his words. “this is what is needed to be done to protect our clan. do you understand this order?”

“yes, i do,” goldencry said, giving in. he didn’t want to break that vow to his clan so he had no choice to accept.

“i want a clear oath.”

“i understand, and i promise to tell others that i dreamt that dream. i’ll take the leader position and do as you said to here today to protect our clan from those loners. that is my oath to you.”

and, being the loyal scout that goldencry was, he did exactly as he promised. on a lie, he became a council member who always sleeps with one eye open as he fears that one day someone will find out about the oath and lie.

"Amberthorn!" Came the horrified cry, as he faced one of his beloved friends since kithood. "Surely, you can't be doing this! This is- idiotic! Worse even! Have you forgotten who you are?!" Pain was clear in the molly's voice, her gaze both pleading and disgusted at the same time. His own gaze fell upon her briefly, yet he remained silent.

The Pharaoh had given him everything. Quite literally everything. He'd been his first friend, a kind tom that looked out for him since his disasterly birth. Nearly dying due to malnourishment, horribly underweight and sickly, it was deemed that night that his fate would be anything but pleasant. His own mother had believed them, mourning over the tom as if he would join the ancestors in a matter of moments - yet there was another force that was willing to attempt to override that destiny. The Pharaoh.
XXXXCalling upon the aid of his own personal healer, the Pharaoh was willing to give Amberthorn a second chance. Under the care of the most skilled paws in the kingdom, this would be his only chance to overcome that which was desperately trying to bring him down, to absolutely destroy him. Nonetheless, the healer refused to give up so easily - aiding the tom during the night and day, frequently keeping an eye upon the sickly character. His mother awaited anxiously for words concerning him - many did. And fortunately, they received it. He was alive and well on his way to recovery.
XXXXBut that wasn't the only thing. The tom was frequently visited by the king, carefully observed from afar and always there to offer him a paw whenever able to. They grew to be friends in a way - even brotherly, so to speak. Amberthorn appreciated his company and protection, his affection and various gifts. So when the tom officially became a soldier and was offered the highly sought after position of the Pharaoh's guard, it was no surprise when he accepted the offer due to their relationship. He eagerly took upon the oath - binding his life forever to his king's.

He served as a loyal guard for many moons, a solid force among the king's personal circle that saw many come and go, a trusted ally and even occasional advisor. His loyalty was admirable...yet, such would be his downfall. As the Pharaoh of Menes had begun to become corrupted, Amberthorn failed to notice these signs. Perhaps such was due to it happening gradually or maybe such had been the plot all along, but regardless as various guards were demoted or even cast out - Amberthorn merely saw it as simply life. Nothing out of the ordinary.
XXXXBut it didn't stop there. The king's corruption was quick to spill into the life of those below him, his paranoia seeming to cause the commoners to worry, to become overly anxious. Those with high ranks constantly shifted, laws changed and fear overwhelmed the entire kingdom. But such didn't become horrid...until the night of the rebellion.

The kingdom had had enough. They were through with living in fear. So, they rebelled against them. But they encountered a force that hadn't originally been expected - that of Amberthorn. Innocent lives were lost in the battle. Amberthorn's skill was unmatched and alongside those with similar abilities, they were practically unstoppable. Those who could oppose them had already been discarded of moons ago...which left the kingdom rather helpless against them.
XXXXEven in their defeat, it wouldn't be the last. For there was a singular hope - to turn Amberthorn against the king. They had hoped those who were close to him would be able to sway him over to their side, their pleas reaching him and allowing a change of heart. But despite their attempts, Amberthorn seemed blind to their issues - by his commitment to the king. Or perhaps, he knew quite well what he was doing...perhaps…

"I am merely doing my duty as I vowed to." He replied simply, flicking his tail dismissively. His gaze was emotionless, a stark contrast in comparison to the molly. She bared her fangs, snarling. "I can't believe you, Amberthorn! You'd rather harm the innocent, turn against what's right and bring pain to your loved ones? And all for this friendship of yours? This is...madness! You've lost your mind!"
XXXXThe tom sighed, seemingly displeased. "Perhaps. I might've lost it long ago. But I owe him everything, which is what you do not understand. I owe him my life as he saved mine and gave me this one...I would be dead had he not stepped in when he did." The molly stared at him. "So, he's more important to you than your home? Family? Even...me?"

Amberthorn blinked. "Yes. I am quite saddened by the fact that you would believe something entirely different." The molly's eyes widened, eyes narrowing. "So, I've wasted my time with you. I trusted you, given my all for you and this is what I get in return? I can't believe it... You're disgusting, Amber-"
XXXXSuddenly, an unsheathed paw fell upon the molly's face. "I've had enough of you. Either respect my decision or depart from my presence at once. I owe my life to him. And if it comes down to it...you will meet the fate I was destined with. So honestly, my dear...do not make this harder than it needs to be. I would hate to be the one to do it...but I live for the king. And the king alone."
