Prompt: Three years. That's how long Ayelet had been in this cursed forest. Three years, two moons, four days, six minutes and counting. She knew it had been unwise to leave her clan's pocket of the earth, safe and protected from everything. But she had also known that she would one day need to know how to fight off enemies and danger.
It had seemed like a good idea when she first entered the forest. Two pawsteps later, when the last scrap of her fur was in the forest, the way she had come in was gone. She was enfolded in what seemed to be the center of the forest.
Now, more than three years apart from that time of young and curiosity, she had not drank or eaten in so long she could barely walk. The only thing that led her was hunger and thirst. She was walking in the direction of running water now. She gratefully drank when she got to the small stream.
Once her thirst was gone from her thought, her hunger led her gaze to that feathery smell of a bird unlike any she'd seen before. It was huge and it was looking at her, yet it was a calmed look, without panic.
Dumb bird. she thought.
Going to get killed, I should think. She sprang at the bird. He remained perched in his same position of calm. She circled the tree, nose twitching, not making a sound. The bird stared. Ayelet glanced up at the sky, checking the wind was in her favor. When it was, she pounced. The Bird slowly flew away and perched himself on her head. She found it quit annoying, and shook her head vigourously until the bird flew away, almost seeming amused back to it's perch.
Fine. She tilted her head up the the bird's dead tree branch.
"Bird!" She tried. "Where can I find something to eat?" She laughed as she became aware of the stupidity of asking a bird where to hunt, let alone talking to a bird at all. The bird tilted it's head. Then it let out a shrill cry. Ayelet had never heard a bird, or any creature for that matter, make a noise like that. The bird made the noise again, and Ayelet thought it sounded somethewhat like an annoyed cat's voice.
The bird spoke agin, but it actually said words. Unless Ayelet was going crazy which was very possible. "I am not 'Bird'." Ayelet shook her head. It was just a bird. It couldn't talk. This forest and her hunger was making her insane. The bird patiently waited for her attention. When Ayelet looked up again, the bird continued. "I am Fallows, and I am an owl. The wisest owl in the forest. The valley is to the west, and I can take you there to hunt. But in return you must take me away out of this forest. The only way I can leave is by the will of a cat." Ayelet decided she liked this "Fallows".
"Sure. I can do that." Fallows nodded gracefully and flew again to perch on Ayelet's back.
