"What are you looking for?" the raptor asked.

The kitten ignored him, pawing harshly at the dry soil.

"You should unsheathe your claws," the raptor advised. "It'll make the digging process go by quicker."

She unsheathed her little claws, then continued to rake the earth.

"Mezereonmarrow," the kitten prompted eventually, pronouncing his name too pristinely for his liking. "What's my name?"

The Blackwing winced. "Your name is Fadedkit," he said, knowing where this was going. He'd said the wrong answer.

"I'm looking for a new name," Fadedkit allowed.

"You're not going to find your name hidden in the dirt."

Sharp, pure-blue eyes suddenly glared at him. "Says who? My mama almost named me Wormkit. That's what the rooks said."

The rooks said that to a kit? Indespicable! Mezereonmarrow swallowed the words clawing to leave his throat. He wanted to tell her that it wasn't true, that Condorstar hadn't renamed Fadedkit himself. He wanted to say that he'd hated his name, too, when he was young, but refused to change it when he was finally offered the chance.

He swallowed those words. "I''ll help you dig," the raptor said instead.
