Cat Name: Ivyleap
Gender: She-cat
Rank: Warrior
Clan: LagoonClan
Age: 40 moons
Eyelashes?: No
Prompt:
Ivyleap coughed, feeling the wet mucus in her throat. Moaning, she lifted herself up and out of the Warrior's den. The cats bustled around her and a couple pushed against her. She slowly padded to the Honoreds' den, knowing she could get more help there than the Healer's, for she knew this land had mystical healing properties that only the eldest could share. A ragged old tom wheezed as he awoke to a shadow cast over him. Ivyleap sat down and inquired about how to help her illness.
"Ah, yeah that's an easy one!" He spoke with a raspy but familiar voice. "Just find my good ol' friend, Lacy! She lives on the other side of the quiet Twoleg den. You'll know it's her by the nice flower necklace and bottles of glowing goop around her flank." Ivyleap thought the description was kinda odd, but collected supplies anyway, and set off on her journey.
The she-cat briskly padded through ferns and trees, finally arriving at the small Twoleg den. She circled around it, staying in the underbrush, and was off once more.
Ivyleap came upon a clearing with a jagged rock in the center. "Hello? Lacy? I've come to find out how to heal my illness!" She called, listening carefully. A rustling came from behind the rock. The cat padded to that side to see more. A sleek green-eyed black tuxedo she-cat slinked out of the shadows, a flower with pointy pink petals dangled from a string. She had an intricate rope of grass and leaves around her flank, carrying Twoleg containers filled with glowing goop. I guess this is Lacy, figured Ivyleap. The cat flicked her tail tip, signaling for the sick she-cat to follow. They passed through unfamiliar territory, filled with colorful plants and birds. The air was damp like the cats were breathing in mist. Ivyleap coughed, worse than before. The trees here were taller, their trunks thick and speckles with white lichen.
    "What is this place?"
"A Twoleg made jungle biome, right outside your little forest. Not sure why they made it. Twolegs are strange." Lacy spoke with a foreign accent.
"How do you know it's from Twolegs?"
"I can read their signs. It took a while."
Ivyleap reminded herself why she was here. "Can you help me? I really need to get back."
"Such a rush. Stay for a meal, my friend." Lacy tilted her head, clearly trying to persuade the clan cat to join her. Ivyleap figured that if she refused, she'd go back empty-pawed.
The she-cats came to a dark cave within the roots of a tree. Vines spilled in front of the entrance from somewhere above. Inside was a marvel, the cave opened up to a lit room with Twoleg containers filled with glowing bugs. The walls were made of wood and vines. Ivyleap was dazzled by everything. Lacy sat down and pushed something towards the other she-cat.
"What is this?" she asked, pawing at the hard, shiny shell.
"Food. I may not have your fancy forest prey, but I make do with what I am given."
Ivyleap nudged it again and saw it had giant pinchers at its mouth. "This is a beetle! I'm not going to eat that!"
    "No meal, no cure."
The she-cat looked disgusted. She would never let herself fall to the level of a bird! "No. I won't eat that."
"Hm. You are strong. I like that. Here is the cure. Take it once every sunset until it is gone." Lacy pushed a Twoleg container towards her. Ivyleap thanked her and was off. Once out of the jungle, she ran as fast as she could, past the Twoleg den, and back into camp. Lacy was kinda creepy.

When Ivyleap followed Lacy's directions, she felt different. Different was good. Then, one day, she woke up and she was straight. And crumbly. And...she looked like Twoleg food! What had Lacy done?! Ivyleap panicked and decided to never trust the Honoreds or Lacy ever again. ;c

Cat Name: Cedarflame
Gender: she-cat
Rank: Guardian
Clan: Cats of the High Mountains
Age: 50 moons
Eyelashes?: Yes
Prompt:

Cedarflame rose from her sleeping position in the warmth of the cozy den. Her paws ached, and her limbs were sore from the hunting she had partook in earlier that day. She could see cats huddled around the den entrance, watching the snow fall heavily from the sky. A growl rose in her throat as she pushed her way through the cats, watching the heavy flakes hit the ground. “Were anymore hunting parties sent out?” She asked gruffly, looking around for an answer. Most of the cats silently shook their heads, while another spoke up. “There hasn’t been any parties sent out since the one you took this morning, Cedarflame. There is still no prey in the pile.” A small tom said.

Cedarflame felt the hunger gnawing away at her, flexing her claws as she craved a meal. She was sure she wasn’t the only one. “Surely all the prey are hidden in their trees and bushes, it would certainly make an easy kill. Are the hunters too afraid of a little snow?” She snapped, her hunger getting the best of her. The small tom spoke up again, “Cedarflame, we’re all starving, we know. But we must let the snow let up before we send out another party. You can hardly see a tail length in front of you, and low visibility in the mountains here are dangerous. You wouldn’t see an avalanche coming, even if it approached slowly. You can hardly see where your stepping, and the scents will be drowned in the heavy snowfall. The prey will be well hidden, and the trees will be slippery, as well as any exposed rocks on the mountain side.” He said.

Cedarflames tail twitched in annoyance, “Then I’ll go by myself. I may not be as nimble as a hunter, but I can surely protect myself from the elements. I am a Guardian, after all. I must make an effort to protect my clan from starvation.” She hissed, pushing her way out of the cave, and into the snowy camp. She had difficulty seeing as she made her way to the camps single entrance and exit in the thorn wall. But she paused when she heard a howl behind her.

“Where do you think you’re going, Cedarflame? In this weather? It surely must be an emergency..” Came the annoyed growl from behind her. It was Buckstar. Cedarflame turned around to face the leader, but could only see his silhouette in the distance. She was surprised he even recognized her appearance in the low visibility weather. Cedarflames annoyance only grew. “We are starving, Buckstar. We haven’t had enough food to go around for days. We need, something. Anything!” She snapped. But Buckstar didn’t let her off the hook so easily. “The snow will surely not last long, and then we can send a proper hunting party out. A cat like you stumbling out in the snow with no vision will not help our cause. You might just scare all the prey away, to make it harder for our hunters to catch it. I’m sure you know how dangerous it is, I don’t need one of our strongest cats dead.” He hissed.

Cedarflame knew she he was trying to compliment her as strong in an attempt to get her to listen. But Cedarflames stubbornness and hunger combined made a very powerful attitude. She only turned her back on Buckstar, and left camp. She could hear an angry howl from the leader behind her, but knew he wouldn’t attempt to follow her. She was on her own now.

Soon the she-cat found herself traversing the mountain, until she found a cluster of trees. Hey, this wasn’t so bad. It was hard to see, yes, but she knew the mountains mostly by memory. This place was popular for birds, and she knew some must surely be hidden in the trees, to protect themselves from the heavy snow. As she slipped underneath the tree, she found the visibility was even better as she turned her head upwards. Excitement pulsed through her as she spotted two clumps of birds nestled in the branches. She wasn’t a hunter, but often assisted them as a leader. She could be a bit clumsy, but had often keyed in on the hunters techniques. She slowly began climbing the tree, keeping her movements slow and quiet. The birds didn’t seem to notice her yet. The branches became thinner mas she was close enough to strike one of the birds, and she readied herself. She threw herself upwards in a pounce of desperation, but realized she had misjudged the distance. She easily missed the bird, and quickly tried to grab onto a branch to break her fall. But the branch, heavy with snow, easily slipped from her paws as her body was dropped helplessly to a branch below. She felt an immense pain in her leg as it crunched against a lower branch, before she was dropped to the ground.

It took the she-cat a bit of a moment to regain her self awareness, realizing what had happened. The impact of her fall had been mostly taken out on the leg that had hit the branch, leaving the rest of her body mostly unscathed. But as she tried to sit up and walk, a crying pain of agony left her jaws. Cedarflame looked down at her leg, seeing it in an awkward and painful position. There was no use calling for help, no one would hear her. So the she-cat used every last ounce of strength she had to drag herself back up the mountain, towards camp.

Once she reached camp, the she-cat was rippled with exhaustion, and pain. The visibility had improved a bit in the weather, and she was seen by many cats as she collapsed in the clearing. She was quickly taken to the healers den, her leg put back into place and densely wrapped by the healer. By the time Cedarflame became conscious again, she could see Buckstar sitting before her.

“I’m sorry, Buckstar.. I should’ve listened.” She mumbled, extremely embarrassed. Buckstar only chuckled slightly.. “I think you’ve earned your punishment with that broken leg. And hopefully, a lesson was learned through this experience.” He said calmly. Cedarflame was more than relieved Buckstar was so forgiving, but knew it would be a while before she could return to her Guardian duties with this leg in bad shape. Buckstar rose to his paws, “Rest well, I’ll make sure the hunting parties are sent out as soon as it’s safe.” He said softly, before leaving Cedarflame in silence.

Cat Name: Yucapaw
Gender: female
Rank: Sabrewing [high rank's apprentice]
Clan: CaladiumClan
Age: 12 moons
Prompt:

She spoke without thinking, throwing half-built retorts at her newest mentor. Poinsettiabriar listened to each one of them, then—rather than scolding her for her insolence—the seriema laughed. “Oh, spitfire. We’re going to be perfect for each other.” The confident glint in her mentor’s eyes was enough to make the sabrewing freeze. Perhaps this would work. Perhaps someone would finally understand her… or so she thought.

[two moons later]

“You don’t get it!” Yucapaw yowled to absolutely no one. Rain cascaded down in sheets, moistening the earth beneath her paws. Thunder crashed, and Yucapaw laughed. Her fur was soaked—she didn’t care. It was so cliche, so melodramatic. As it turned out, Poinsettiabriar hadn’t understood her. And she’d been so hopeful, so hopelessly hopeful… all for nothing. She shouldn’t have let her hopes up.

Yucapaw—I don’t care how much experience you have; you are not allowed to leave camp alone, especially not during a storm, and you better not even think about crossing the river—

The sabrewing stood across the river, the raging river, raging with all the extra water being dumped into it. Oh, bloomtide was such a wonderful season. Yucapaw located the fallen log traditionally used for crossing purposes when the weather was safe but the river flowed too deep. Right now? The weather wasn’t safe. Not safe at all. But did Yucapaw really care right now? No, she didn’t. Not really.

“Yucapaw!” a familiar voice cried, somehow resounding over the storm.

Lightning flashed, and Yucapaw panicked. She couldn’t let Poinsettiabriar catch up with her. The Cardinal Seriema would grab her by the scruff and drag her back to camp kicking, scratching, biting. So she did the one thing that went against all the pieces of advice that Poinsettiabriar had given her: despite the storm, despite the danger, she leapt onto the log (the slippery, slippery, perilous log) and raced across. Her heart skipped more than one beat, adrenaline circuiting through her veins.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered beneath her breath the entire time, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” She was downright terrified (because what if she fell; she couldn’t swim; this was so stupid, so foolish; she couldn’t stop and turn back because she’d definitely fall then; she was going to die and she was so stupid—)

She tripped and tumbled, breath hitching and—land. She’d made it. Somehow, against all odds, she was on soggy, muddy, land (but it was land!) and she laughed, terrified and exhilarated (and that had been fun; the terror and uncertainty—um? was that a sign of insanity?—)

“Yucapaw!” her mentor cried from the other side of the raging river. And then, suddenly, all the excitement… faded away. No more glee; now, it was just pure terror. Don’t cross the river; don’t leave camp alone; never travel during a storm. And her mentor recognized it—the fear in her eyes, the way her fur stood on the end, the slight curling of her tail—

“Curse the stars, Yucapaw; picaturo, just stay where you are; I’m coming—”

Yucapaw opened her maw—don’t come; I’ll be fine!—she wanted to cry, but nothing came out of her maw. She didn’t want Poinsettiabriar to come; she didn’t want her mentor to risk it—

Poinsettiabriar rushed towards her, the rain crashing down around them. Lightning flashed and—

and—lightning flashed—and

thunder crashed—and—

and thunder crashed—and—

Poinsettiabriar slipped.

(Yucapaw yelled. Poinsettiabriar flashed a final smile. — Around them, rain poured. Lightning flashed. Thunder crashed.)

__________
  • a sad, sad ending...
  • Yuca's sass has gotten her reassigned mentors so many times... she holds the record
  • yup, she's a bit old for an apprentice, but she doesn't listen when her mentors try to teach her
  • Poinsettia actually did manage to help her as a former trouble child, too... what you read was Yuca's denial that went much farther than anyone expected it, and took a very wrong turn to wrap it all up
