"So, you're new in town," Onyx said to Sawyer as they walked along the main street, Sawyer eyeing the shop fronts critically. When he didn't respond, Onyx continued, "Anything you wanna know or see?"
"Who's in charge around here? They a good person?" Sawyer asked, eyes still on the shops. Onyx thought the question was a little odd, but hey, this guy and his kid sidekick, Cardinal, were from another universe. Things could be weirder. Onyx thought about the question, having to dig around in his memory to find the answer.
"I think Baer is technically the mayor. Around here we live as one big family it feels like, but since we do technically have a dot on the map, someone had to be voted in, and everyone loves and trusts Baer. He's a real sweetheart."
"Good at protecting y'all?"
"From what?" Onyx giggled, causing Sawyer to look at him quizzically. Onyx stopped laughing and raised an eyebrow, prompting Sawyer to answer.
"From bandits. Ne'er-do-wells. Folks looking to do harm just for the sake of doing harm," Sawyer said. This was clearly a genuine concern of his. Onyx had to think about it. He'd never heard of anyone in town trying to do anything harmful to anyone, and the town was so small that travelers who passed through did so without a second thought. Eventually he shrugged.
"We don't really have someone to protect us, 'cause there's nothing to protect us from. I mean, Octavian and Damon are both real tough guys, but they're also super kind. If we needed protecting, I have no doubt they'd do it, but they don't call themselves sheriffs or nothin." Onyx explained. He pointed to Octavian's cabin on the hill farther from the rest of the town and Damon's boathouse as he spoke of each of them. Sawyer looked at both places, deep in thought.
The cowboy was about to ask another question when Cardinal came swooping down, landing roughly on the concrete and shaking himself out. The kid turned to Onyx excitedly. "You didn't say you had other dimension-hoppers here! Sawyer, guess what. There's a brother and sister who came from someplace else just like us!"
"Is there now?" Sawyer seemed interested in that, but it was only shown by a slight uptick in his tone and the twitch of an ear.
"Everett and Daisy! They crossed over to here on accident a few years ago. Their dad Octavian said he's always interested in hearing about our past world, if we want to talk."
"Octavian's their father, hm?" Sawyer squinted up at Octavian's cabin in the distance and Onyx nodded.
"He adopted the kits after they arrived and we couldn't get them home," Onyx explained.
"Kind man..." Sawyer said quietly before he looked out over the lake, then along the shopfronts, and then back at Onyx. He studied the black kalon closely, finding no tells of deceit or foolishness in Onyx's energy.
It was hard to believe that an entire town, no matter how small, could be filled with folks like this, but then again, this was a whole different world. Sawyer looked again at Cardinal, who was watching him too, curious to know his mentor's response to the town. Sawyer sighed and lowered the guarding wall around his heart by a single brick.
"I suppose we can stay for a while, until we find a place of our own," the cowboy said with no emotion, but his decision made Onyx swell. The black kalon puffed up his chest in a mixture of pride and excitement, his blue shine flashing in the sunlight as he did so. He was pleased to have done a good job at walking Sawyer around the town.
"Great! I'll let Fiona know and she can inspect a place for you, make sure everything's running right for you guys to move in for a bit."
"You don't need to do that-" Sawyer started, still believing he and Cardinal would only be staying a short while. Onyx brushed him off.
"'Course we do! Can't have you camping out in the woods when we got perfectly fine facilities. Wait here, I'll call her up." With that, Onyx stepped away, and Sawyer sighed, a hint of a smile tempting his lips.
If everyone was going to be as nice as this guy, perhaps he could finally have time to breathe.
