Others often warn that Chandin is fragile. Him? Fragile. Chandin scoffs at the idea. He is not fragile. He is the best hunter and the bravest warrior the pride has. Many lions respect him. Why would he be called fragile?
He’s still considering the question as he trains a new hunter. Because of course the newcomer should only learn from the best. The two of them are silent as they stalk closer to the deer herd. One perks its head, ears swivelling. Chandin turns to his charge, ready with instructions.

But she isn’t there.

Chandin gasps, turning to the herd of deer, heart in his mouth. She is going to scare off the prey! No one can run at a deer at catch it like that! Not even Chandin! The lioness leaps, and - takes the deer down. The other hunters rush in, congratulating her, but Chandin just stands there.

Its impossible. Not even Chandin can do that. There’s a crushing feeling in his heart, as he realises he isn’t good enough. There is now someone better than him. He bows his head, unable to look at the rest of them celebrating when all he feels is defeat.

The newcomer asks why her so-called mentor is nowhere to be seen. But the other hunters just laugh a little.

“That’s Chandin for you. He’s fragile. His ego is always just moments away from breaking. He’ll be back to normal by tomorrow.” (241/250)
