Competition: BLUE - Stallion mentioned within storyAs the trailer came to a halt, diesel became more anxious. Peering through the little slits in the trailer. She was able to see several nice paddocks and pastures. An overly sized working arena that was occupied by a few horses and riders. The easiness that had found a home within her gut faded a little as she saw just how happy some of the horses seemed. Maybe she would like it here.
The trailer door opened and Cassie stood there with a big grin on her face. “Hello there girl! Let’s get ya unloaded and introduced to the others!” Darn, that uneasy feeling came back.. she pinned her ears for a split second but released them as she didn’t want to start her new life in a bad attitude. Cassie gave a chuckle at the mares sudden change in thought. She unhooked her and led her out of the trailer.
Now fully unloaded diesel was able to take a better look at her new home. Hmm, it wasn’t as fancy as Hawthorn stables were. But for being a backwoods southern facility it wasn’t all that bad. As she walked to the side of the trailer, Cassie tied her up real quick. “Okay girl, we gotta get you cleaned a little up. Can’t be looking crazy on our first day can we?” Diesel gave a soft nicker, maybe this lady did know a thing or two. Getting a quick brush down and hair cleaned from debris. She switched her makeshift halter to a nice brand new one.
They came up to a pasture entrance. The mare spotted a group of horses standing off towards the left side. She could smell a stallion and several mare. She swiveled her ears behind her head and gave a huff. Oh great, just what she needed. Mare syndrome to add to the stress of trying to find her place within the new heard. Cassie chuckled again. “ it’ll be alright, just you wait. I’m sure there’s someone you’ll find interesting in that group” Cassie said with a wink. Diesel practically rolled her eyes. What in the world did that even mean.
Once finally inside the pasture Cassie gave out a loud holler calling the other horses in. They immediately responded and filed in. They all had quite the brave personality’s coming up to her and acting as if she was just a foal. She stomped and pawed the ground trying to establish dominance. It was no use, they all dismissed her and laughed together. One chestnut mare spoke up,” Who are you? Think your such an important horse do ya? All you are is a mismarked donkey!!” Her followers burst out with laughter with the mare.
Diesel reeled back appalled that they would even say such a thing. She pinned her ears flat against her skull. Closing her eyes to a slit,” Oh look at me, I’m just a dumb chestnut mare who bucks everyone off and can’t control my emotions!” Diesel spat back at her. The group all gasped at the mares statement. “ I can’t believe she just said that to cher” one whispered to the other. Diesel was quick to connect the dots and assume the mare who was so rude was named Cher.
Cher gave a fiery snort and charged diesel giving a loud shriek and teeth bared. Before she could make contact Cassie quickly took the end of the lead rope and started to swing at the charging mare yelling “Ha! Ha! Ha! Don’t you dare Cher get goin!” She quickly stopped her in her tracks. Almost giving it second thought the fiery mare gave a glare before turning and taking off towards the other side of the field. Her followers close on her heels.
Diesel looked at Cassie with dismay in her eyes and lowered her head. “Hey girl it’s okay, those resident horses don’t stick around for long unlike you. This is your home, they will eventually go back to theirs. Just try to get along okay?” She asked the mare. Diesel understood but was still visibly upset. “ oh cmon you haven’t met my favorite guy yet. Watch this” Cassie smiled and pulled her fingers to her lips. She let out a loud whistle three times and waited.
The mare perked her ears. She could here thundering hoof prints. Looking in the direction the sound came from she was able to spot a mostly white but blue marked horse thundering there way. Oh great she thought. Dropping her head and rolling her eyes, this was gonna go one of 2 ways. Either he was a know it all hard head of a stallion or was a super annoying outcast like herself.
As the stallion approached he gave a nicker and a stud like smile. “Well well well who do we have here? Little mis misfortune huh?” He gave with a sly grin. Diesel stood in her tracks. Wait a minute I know that voice... that voice from so long ago.
Following up from his hooves her gaze ran up to meet his. Eyes that so long ago gave comfort and home feeling. That smile that somehow always cheered her up no matter the situation. Could it really be? Her best friend from oh so long ago standing right in front of her once again? “Blue is that really you?” She said in disbelief. “The one and only” he snickered back to her.
She lifted her head and shook her neck giving a whinny. How could this be?! She thought. Her best friend who she thought she’d never see again. Standing before her in her new home! Cassie gave a big grin. She knew they’d recognize each other the moment they met again.
At the time when Cassie had adopted blue, she only had the funds to get him and not his best friend. She felt awful since they day and knew he was missing apart of his heart. Since they day she had actively searched for the mare to hopefully reunite them. So when she had spotted the mare in the round up from the crash she knew she had to come home with them somehow some way.
Unhooking diesel she laughed and said “get on you 2!!” Without hesitation the horses took off running at full speed side by side into wooded section of the pasture. They bucked and jumped as if nothing had changed and they were still yearlings. In their home pasture running about without a care in the world.
As they came to a stop they circled and both met muzzle to muzzle. Nuzzling the other with such affection. “I can’t believe it’s really you blue. I really thought I’d never see you again” diesel croaked talking to him. Sadness danced across her face at the thought of never seeing him again. He gave a soft nudge and warm smile “Hey darlin dont think that. I told ya no matter what I’d get back to you. No matter how far or for how long. I promised I’d find you and come back to you.”
They snuggled neck in neck. Pure happiness radiating from each other. Diesel was so full of happiness and joy being back with her lost love. And to think, she thought she’d be just as miserable if not worse at this new home. She now had something that no other stable or barn could replace. Her best friend, long time soul mate, and love.

[Yes I do realize that with having overo her and my boy blue cannot technically have children, BUT that doesn’t mean that they cannot be high school sweetheart lovers <3 they match so perfectly with odd markings!]
