    After the successful first route, Mystique began to feel confident in her ability to help out. She moved up to the first space behind the search and rescue mounts. Now, she was extremely alert and focused, knowing what she had to listen and look out for.

    The group came to a small path covered in fresh hoofprints and knew that there had to be at least one horse at the end. The group set off down the path, single file, but were stopped halfway by a large downed tree. Almost all of the horses had no prior jumping training, let alone jumping in a tight, confined area. Mystique knew it was going to be up to her to get to the other side of the tree.

    The other horses in the group backed up and moved off to the side of the trail as far as they could so Mystique and I could make our way up to the tree. I let her stop and take a look at the tree for a moment, knowing she would understand what she had to do. She took a quick look at the tree and began backing up. Once she felt she was at a good distance, she took off at full speed toward the tree. She jumped the tree with ease and proudly took a moment to prance around. After her prideful display, I got off of her back, tied her reins to a branch on the tree, and with the help of some of the search and rescue experts moved the tree out of the way.

    Once the tree was moved, the group continued on toward the end of the path. At the end, we found an entire herd of horses needing to be rescued. I was so proud of Mystique. I dismounted to go check out the other horses and help put leads on them. Just before we started heading back with this group of horses, I grabbed some sugar cubes out of my bag and made sure Mystique knew how proud I was of her.

    It was barely even sunrise when Amethyst felt the warm lips of a Euphorian tickling her neck; the human female groaned, turning her back to the mare as she cuddled farther under the blanket, protesting against the cold wind that blew against her trailer and in through the tiny cracks in the sheet metal. There came an idignant snort, then a much stronger nudge from the mare Amethyst was currently bunking with. "Huntress..." The woman warned, but in her sleep-deprived and exhausted state, it came out more like a whine than an actual warning. Barely 60 seconds passed and there was yet another assault from the pushy Euphorian, and Amethyst realized she wasn't going to give up any time soon. "Alright, alright, I'm up. You do realize that none of the teams are probably even up yet, right?" Slowly Amethyst hauled herself up and stretched deeply, muscles aching from the long hours in the saddle paired with sleeping on nothing but haybales. Rubbing her face, she groaned at the mare's expectant gaze. "Alright, alright, let's get started then."

    A cup of coffee and a hot breakfast later, Amethyst led Huntress out of the trailer and into the snowy outside. Her pale coat blended in so well with their surroundings, just one of many reasons that Huntress had been chosen as one of her Search and Rescue Mounts. When this call for help had gone out, Amethyst felt confident that Huntress had been ready to finish her training and be put to the test; and if yesterday was anything to go by, she was not disappointed.

    Once outside, Amethyst could just barely see the first rays of light peeking above the clouds and through the trees, turning the world from a bitter dark to a faded grey, frost causing the sun's light to dance between the branches. Amethyst took her time tacking up the painted Euphorian, carefully wrapping her boots and putting as much protection on Huntress as possible; the woman knew that if she was cold, then she couldn't even imagine how cold the missing Euphorians would be. Now fully awake and with a renewed sense of purpose, Amethyst vaulted herself up into the saddle just as there came more movement from the clearing around her, other teams waking with the sun to greet a new day. Smiling, Amethyst gently nudged Huntress forward, and they set off purposefully into the surrounding woods. Next stop: The creek.

The first week of searching had been concluded, leaving the group of search and rescue workers with a hand full of horses they discovered in a giant clearing not too far from the crash site. Thankfully a majority of the horses didnt sustain any injuries and those who did were only covered in scraps from running though the thick brush of the forest. Arcadia had worked hard the last week and Bailey decided to retire her from the search and pull out Southpaw.

Southpaw eagerly pawed at the ground as Bailey began tacking him up. Although his original discipline was hunter jumper, the stallion loved walking trails and exploring. Bailey knew he would be one of the best candidates for this search and rescue event. As she climbed into the saddle she steered Southpaw in the direction of the group that was starting to form. She sat back in her saddle as she pulled out her phone to send an update text to Memphis;
"Everything is going well on my end. We're about to head out again to find more horses. Hope everything is running smoothly."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Southpaw and the others walked through the forest, he took notice that he towered over a lot of the other horses who joined him in this party. Bailey used this to her advantage and moved her way to the front of the formation, informing one of the other owners that she could be in front to see over certain obstacles. Thankfully her idea was successful;
As they neared a creek, Bailey noticed a glimpse of color in the distance. She pulled on the reins gently to have Southpaw come to a halt.
Sure enough another group of horses were taking up residence at a small pool of water. Some were standing around basking in the sun, and others were grazing the tall grass on the embankment.
Thanks to Southpaws extreme height, the search party was able to locate the second group of missing horses.

The young Barcelonian take a deep breath, watching as those around him cheer and celebrate a job well done. The first search and rescue mission was a success, each of the missing horses being rescued and taken in under the care of respective stables. Stephano couldn't help but smile- he hoped to be able to bring some new herd members back with him after everything was said and done. It was a hard task sometimes, trying to keep up with the group- a lot of them would go off on their own paths through deer trails instead of sticking to the path, so it was usually difficult for him to decide who he should split up with; after all either team could need help down the line!

It wasn't long before the second search was underway, the ground beneath them frozen and slippery. Stephano does his best to keep his footing, allowing other team members to lean on him for support when needed. After walking through the froze underbrush, a few fallen logs lay before the team, each member looking to Stephano for his assistance. The young stallion grins, some of the mares who have joined along in the search swooning quietly to themselves as the humans on the team hook him up to the logs and allow him to pull them off the path. Everyone cheers, high-fiving and heading farther down the path, and Stephano smiles. He may not be the greatest at finding the runaways, but he is always willing to make the job a bit easier for everyone else when needed.

Azalea had decided to take Hunter out with her for the second route, it seemed it would be a harder ride today and she needed his experience out on the trail. After tacking up and joining the group she was supposed to head out with, she was determined to find more horses and get them back. And so was Hunter. Eclair had told him about the ride yesterday and how relieving it was to get the first group of horses back safely. Hunter wanted to be able to help too and give these lost horses a new hope for finding new homes.

Hunter and Azalea set out in the back of the group, keeping an eye out for stragglers and socializing with a few of the other pairs as the ride got progressively muddy as the group went along. Soon enough, they had happened upon a stream, the lead mare getting excited and calling out to the others as she noticed the hoofprints. She and her rider charged along into the mud and almost immediately there was a cry of distress as the mare's hoof sunk deep into the mud. Azalea desperately called for the rest of the riders to hang back and nudged Hunter forward, working with him to find the mud that would support their weight.

Hunter was able to get to the stuck and panicking mare, Azalea getting off of Hunter to get the rider to safety and solid ground. As a team, Hunter and Azalea were able to guide the mare to pull herself out of the mud, as well as get rest of the horses and riders across the muddy stream. They might have been a little worse for wear and muddy, but at least everyone was safe. And they had found the second group of horses to boot. (304 words)

Lantana of the Ruby Grove watched the other horses uncharacteristically quietly as her rider dismounted to refuel with snacks. They were taking a quick break in between the first and second searches, it seemed. The break allowed horses to rest their hooves and kept riders from starving atop their mounts - a certain mare was confident that her rider had skipped breakfast to assist in the hunt, the stubborn human she was.

"It's cold," Lantana heard another horse whinny petulantly. "I can't believe we're still out here. Any trained horse would know how to navigate; they'd find their way back eventually. It's so stupid - why did they even spread out like this? We could find them so much easier if only-"

The mare stopped listening there. Whipping her tail down in irritation, Lantana stalked towards the other horse. She gave him a once-over and rolled her eyes. Of course, it just had to be another stuck-up stallion. "If you think you're so good, why don't you just dally back to your barn with your head down and tail between your legs?" she sniped rudely. "I'm sure we could save lives without your pathetic whining poisoning the air."

Eyes narrowing at the chiding, the stallion shot back, "And what right do you have to speak to me in that tone?"

"What right do you have to speak in that tone?" Lantana returned. "Be grateful that I haven't aimed a kick at your head yet."

Before any other equine could speak up, Lantana noticed the riders preparing to mount again. She bit back more words, then walked over to Phae. As the human mounted, an untacked mare sidled up to Lantana. She offered a shy smile and whinnied, "Thanks for putting that stallion back in his place. It was getting on my nerves."

Casting a glance at the speaker, Lantana inquired, "You're one of the rescued horses?"

"Yes, I am-"

Her rider urged her forwards and Lantana responded swiftly, "No problem - I'll speak to you later; hopefully we can find more of your friends-" and then she was off, trotting along the trail, in a slightly better mood than before.
