"I didn't mean to, I swear!"
His sister's face shone with worry and her tail flicked anxiously.
Nettle couldnt help but feel a sharp pang of guilt. When he discovered that she'd left another member of the group seriously wounded, he'd gone to confront her about it. As far as he knew, he was the only one to have found out about the accident. At first, she denied it, though after enough prying from him she came clean. Rain's initial dishonesty surprised him, she had always had a tendency to be sincere in her words.
Or at least, he had thought she did.
"I know, Raine," He spoke in the gentlest tone he could muster. No matter what his sister had done, he didn't want to upset her. "But you can't just do something like that. It's just not right."
"I know! I know. I was just so scared I- I didn't mean to hurt her!" Raine's voice grew frantic. "Please, don't tell anyone. Just give me one more chance, I'll never do anything like it again. I promise!"
Nettle felt conflicted. Of course, it wasn't good that she had hurt someone. But he hated seeing his sister so upset and she truly seemed remorseful for what she did. He had been so close with Rain, he'd always known her to be gentle. While he didn't know the full story on what happened, Nettle was certain she would never purposefully hurt someone.
So he had given her a second chance. And then a third. And then a fourth.
One way or another, he'd figure out she was bending the truth in her words or avoiding it entirely. If these were little things, simple white lies without much consequence, it would have been different. But someone almost always got hurt, either physically or mentally. Raine always pled her innocence, insisting that she didn't know better. Asking for another chance. At first, he truly did believe her. But nothing changed, and it only became more difficult for him to tell whether or not she was truly being honest. So, when Raine begged for one last chance again, Nettle shook his head sadly.
"I already have."
If it had just been Raine, things would have been different. Except, it wasn't just her.
It may have been the first instance that someone betrayed his trust, but it definitely wasn't the last. Time and time again, he put his confidence in someone only to discover that they weren't what they seemed. Dishonest, dangerous, manipulative, sometimes even all three. Over time Nettle grew more and more jaded to lies; he started to almost expect them from others.
After all, it happened too many times for it to be purely coincidence. He'd grown to keep his guard up, giving second chances would only end in betrayal. Nettle gained a more cynical outlook of those around him and, over time, became closed off and overall distrustful.
He swore that he would never make the same mistakes again.
