"Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings."

Those words echoed in Gabriel's mind as he streaked across the sky in a ball of holy fire, his wings burning away into stardust as fell. To the people below, it was a beautiful sight. But to Gabriel, it was the start of a punishment most severe, and a quest to prove himself worthy of grace once more.

The year was 1908, and people across Eurasia watched Gabriel streak across the sky until he finally landed in the Tunguska region of Siberia. The ensuing shockwave flattened miles of forest, and the blast was heard around the world. They called it a meteor, an asteroid, a comet. They had no idea that they had just witnessed what happens when an angel falls from grace.

Gabriel dragged himself from his crater. His former lord had been most cruel. His once perky, playful ears were now fused to his head. His breathtaking baby blue eyes wouldn't open. And when he opened his mouth to cry out to his former lord for forgiveness, there was only the sound of the burning forest. But the worst were his wings, reduced to nothing, only tufts of fur remaining on his back.

Neo was known for being odd, but his bell was no exception. It was large, round, and had a beautiful sheen. But even so, it was a bit too large for many’s comfort. And it’s face-like holes didn’t help, nor did it’s jingle. Many joke that the bell’s jingle made up for Neo’s inability to speak, while others considered it creepy. The bell’s jingle was a melodic sound, sounding like a baby’s laugh. Despite being a noise known to induce happiness in others, it managed to make them uncomfortable. Neo couldn’t help but wonder why.
Some tried to claim the bell had stolen his voice. Other’s claimed it was a companion speaking for him. Most, though, attempted to write it off as superstition and coincidence. He was an oddity. A scary story. A laughing stock and proclaimed monster all in one. Alone.
All of this, over a mute boy and a bell? It was ridiculous, and least, that’s what she thought. How selfish, insensitive, and straight up cruel could kalons be? How could they cast someone out for being different, and dare she say, special? What made that acceptable?
She made it her mission to befriend Neo. To protect him from the kals who hardly saw him as what he was; just another one of them. As it turned out, it wasn’t hard to become friends with someone who had never had one. He was scepticle at first, as anyone would be, but it didn’t take him long to warm up to her. She was his hero.
