On the floor of the bathroom, was a dead moth. However that very moth was one that Cecil had been looking for a specimen for ages, never quite expecting one to show up quite in a place like this. With a quick glance around their surroundings, they carefully placed it into their bag, careful to not damage its delicate wings and set on home.

The most important part, and risky part was going to be positioning the moth to be easily displayed, a step which took several days. Cecil was careful not to show their parents; they would throw it out, not realizing what loss it was to Cecil. But, once the step was over was the hardest part over.

In their closet, hidden from the world were preserved invertebrates of every kind. From beautiful butterflies to the creepiest centipedes, each frame contained what Cecil considered their works of art carefully preserving the fragile bodies. Hours among hours of work made a beautiful display case framed so every insect shone through the glass case. Carefully pinning the moth to a empty spot in one of the frames, they couldn’t help but take a minute to stare.

Their collection was for their eyes only, as Cecil couldn’t bear to imagine what would happen if anyone else would have found it. Still, it was peaceful for both Cecil and the insects they framed. Closing the closet, Cecil decided it was best not to disturb them any further.

Briar quickly turned a corner, entering a dimly lit alley. Courtesy of the broken street lamps that the city has never bothered to replace. Pulling the hood over their face, they chanced a look over their shoulder. Ensuring no one was following them, they gripped tighter to the bag slung over their shoulder they continued their hustled pace. Their free hand twitching with nerves and excitement. Briar had to be quick as possible, blend into the background of the city because they couldn't get caught. If they were, it would be a media frenzy. Briar shivered with horror at the thought of becoming a public spectacle. This was definitely a craft that they would rather keep secret. Finally, they reached their goal coming up on a wall that housed one side of a library that was quickly falling to ruins due to being defunded. Briar pulled the cans of spray paint out of the old bag, being careful to ensure the cans didn't click together and alert anyone of their presence. Briar quickly tagged the wall in a beautiful mural of children, books, and the depictions of what a library can mean to the people of the city. Especially those without large sums of money. Briar hoped her craft and notorious reputation as an anonymous graffiti artist would bring the attention and fund this place needed to survive. Regardless, Briar knew they couldn't just sit around and do nothing. This was the best they could do, hopefully, it was enough. [250/250]

“I can’t keep covering for you, Binoui.”

“I know. I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”

Binoui wiped a bead of sweat from their brow, leaving behind a heavy smudge of grease. The band of their mask felt so heavy today. But they lowered it once more and returned to work.

They couldn’t get their supervisor’s words out of their head. They were running out of luck. They were running out of time.

Every day, the same government sanctioned job. But long, bitter hours were better than begging for food parcels down in the lower regions of the cityscape.

In that way, even leaving for the Underground, the resistance movement, had its drawbacks. Not that they weren’t going. They were. They would be there already if it weren’t for her. She wasn’t ready.

A sweet warmth spread through them, warmer than the welding flames at their fingertips, as they thought of her. The copper-plated semi-sentient AI robotic bird they’d spent every spare hour building. Her name was Cheri. Long hours, stolen parts, close calls. They were for her. Every day Binoui fought, hid, made a “living” were for her. Heading home to find her cheerful eyes, her songlike chirps. They loved her, like nothing they’d ever had.

Time was running low. Missing parts were being noticed. Their work was falling behind. But they were so close. She’d be ready, and they’d be away to the Underground. Together.

The subtle glow of the bottle in the dim midnight light cast soft shadows across the forest floor. It flickered in and out of brightness, sparkles of pink and orange dancing across the glass. Every glow was different, mused the figure sitting on a nearby log. This one, she would argue, is rather playful. Or… was? Yes, better to use the past tense.

It’s not like it will ever return to its original form anyway.

A wicked smile wound its way around her face. She reached out with a pale hand and clutched the neck of the bottle, long painted nails echoing sharp clicks into the night air, and she raised it to eye level to peek inside. “You were a tough one, I’ll give you that. Too smart for your own good,” she chuckled giving it a quick shake. The glowing orb inside bounced off the walls and more sparks flew as if angry at the rough handling.

“Oh hush,” she chided, “we won’t have to see each other much longer. Soon you’ll be where you belong, and my pockets will be richer for it.”

While Calamity admired the bags of gold coins in exchange, she really did it all for the fun of it. The chase is always the best part. The hunt… the deceit. Just the mere thought brought adrenaline coursing through her veins.

Once you hunt a soul there’s no going back. Watching that light fade from their eyes and into a small bottle? Absolutely magical.

Chimari shuffled around, not even a breath of air swept through the velvety blanket of the night. No stars danced through the sky, leaving the world dark.
The air began to thicken as she crossed the road. She could sense the presence of something. However, it was no longer alive.
She looked around and bent over, closing her nose as the putrid scent hit her. Yup. This was it.
She then examined the set of bones. They were definitely not fresh. There was barely anything left besides bones. Perfect.

She took her discovery home, creeping inside with the bones in a plastic bag to seal the stench. As soon as she got upstairs, she would put them in a container with warm water to clean them overnight.

She blinked, sleep sitting heavy on her shoulders. This was not an easy task and was rather time-consuming, but it was all for her business.
Chimari completed the task and felt relieved as she got up, finally falling onto her bed and drifting off.

She woke up early, the sun barely peeking its rays over the mountains.
Chimari took the container filled with bones and water and hid behind her home, pouring out the water carefully.

She bolted upstairs and went to her room, digging through a drawer to find a chain. She drilled a hole into one of the bones, an unknown creature's tooth, stringing the chain through. Done!

She then posted her creation on Etsy, sighing.
Tonight she would hunt again.

"Nerali, come along! You are going to be late for school."
"One minute!"
"No, Nerali, now."

Nerali rolled her eyes and her paws glided across the baby blue Nintendo. Mario Karts played from the small device as Bowser crashed into a large rock. She groaned and pressed the Restart button. A white screen popped up with the familiar Play symbol displayed across it. Nerali hesitantly pressed it, her heart quickly beating. I'm in high school, if kids found out that I still played with my Nintendo... She shook her head, the thought was too much to bare. Nerali moved the joystick around as pixel Princess Peach drove around in a black racecar. KNOCK. KNOCK. Nerali threw her Nintendo to the ground, kicking it under her bed with her foot. She jumped up and pulled the rob over her that was on the floor. She opened her closet and busied herself by looking through.

"Come in."
"Ahh, good. You're getting dressed."
"Yup."

And as her mother left, the ploy started again.
