He sat by a grave, the soft sound of the wind rustling the trees. He didn't know who had died here; the words on the tombstone were unreadable, written in a language lost to time. He reached out, carefully, and wiped a few flecks of dirt from the stone, a sullen look on the young man's face.
"You shouldn't be here," a sudden voice announces, and it startles the poor kalon so much that he jumps up from his spot, staring behind him in fear. The groundskeeper, Othello, gives him a stern look, but waves him off has he turns, a shovel in his hand. "Five more minutes. I have to close up for the night." He nods quietly, but the gesture is missed by the stranger who runs the graveyard, and he looks back to the stone for another short moment, before placing a single daisy on the disturbed ground that lies at the foot of it. "Sorry," he says quietly, before he turns to take his leave. "I'll come back again sometime."
He appears once a week, sometimes more, at the little graveyard outside the town. Each time he's greeted by the other kalon watching the grounds, the other always giving him a dismissing wave when Leuco enters the fenced-off area. "I'll just be a minute," he offers, a little smile on his face, but the stranger doesn't offer him anything in return. Whether on purpose or by lack of hearing, he continues with a book in his hands, the title of it difficult to make out in the shiny, cursive font on the front cover and spine of the book. With no response, he carries on, and moves into the graveyard, looking at all the tombstones again. One of them held importance to him; one of them held his long deceased father, a man that he'd admired and respected since his day of birth. Now gone, he felt lost, the grave belonging to him overgrown with grass and the lettering now fading. After some time he'd started to look over other graves, trying to learn what he could about these strangers he'd never get to know. It brought irritation to the poor groundskeeper, and every time he visits, he watches him, wary of his intent and concerned by his sudden interest in the other patrons of the yard. Enough time had passed that he'd begun to trust him, or if nothing else, he'd given up on his concern of Leuco doing something nefarious on the grounds. As he rounded the graveyard, he leaves a few flowers at some of the stones, mumbling quietly to himself, an apology, a thank you, a goodbye. When he passes the other kalon again, he says goodbye to him, as well, and the stranger waves back, and glances at him while he leaves the premises. He smiles a little at him, and the stranger looks down at his book, again, grumbling something to himself.
He came back again, each week. It became a routine, almost, for Othello to let him into the grounds, give him a curt greeting and go back to his own studies. At some point Leuco offered to share his lunch with the other kalon, and he agreed, allowing the kit inside the undertaker's building. As they sat together and ate from the little lunch pail Leuco had brought with him, he asked the other about his purpose, why he'd chosen to work at a graveyard. Othello gave the young man a strange look, but answered after a short silence.
"It was my father's work. And my father's father, and so on. It felt natural to follow in their footsteps." Leuco nods, chewing quietly as he looks around the workshop.
"Makes sense," he offers after he's finished the bite of food in his mouth, nodding to himself a little.
It continued like this, for weeks, months, years. The two of them began to spend time together outside of Leuco's visits, joining each other in the quiet field outside of town for lunch, watching the clouds pass by before the afternoon rainstorm rolled in and chased them back inside. Leuco began bringing flowers not for the graves, but for his friend, and the two of them would go out and braid the flora into crowns to wear on their heads while they sat in the warm sun outside of the dusty undertaker's building. Sometimes another kalon would call for Othello from inside the workshop, or Leuco would remember something he'd forgotten to do that morning, and the two would part quickly, with only a simple goodbye between them before they returned to their own lives. Still, their short moments together were cherished by both, the strange friendship between them something special.
