Prompt: Bzzz...
Adrienne's eyes slowly fluttered open to find a fat bumblebee perched on the end of her nose, outlined by the bright blue sky. She smiled as it tottered in a circle, leaving a trail of yellow pollen.
Uh, oh... pollen... She thought, her eyes going wide. Unable to help herself, she sneezed a giant sneeze and the bee drifted away. After watching it go, she took in her surroundings. She had fallen asleep in a patch of sweet green grass and spring wildflowers not far from her family's barn, although it was still as far as she was allowed to go. Much to her surprise, her clingy mother wasn't anywhere in sight. This was the first break they had had in a rainy season, and Adrienne was enjoying the sun. Speaking of the sun, she noticed it was no longer hovering straight above her like when she had fallen asleep, but instead dipping towards the west.
Sneezing again, she decided she should probably return home. She had been out in the pollen long enough to aggravate her allergies for many days. As she stood, though, the most wonderful aroma greeted her nose, and she breathed in deeply, her eyes closing. This was a scent she only got the pleasure of smelling for a short period once a year, but it was her favorite because of what it meant. It was the undeniable scent of juicy, ripe apricots. Her mouth began to water. Without another glance at the barn or a thought to all the rules she was breaking, she wandered in the direction of the scent, her eyes still closed. She was practically gliding through the air, her nose held high enough that her feet barely touched the ground. Soon, her surroundings became unfamiliar but she didn't even notice because she was so caught up in her daydreams of delicious apricots triggered by the ever-strengthening scent.
After walking for an amount of time that she still can't recall, Adrienne bumped into something, halting her steps and pulling her out of her head. Her eyes sprung open, and she found herself standing before a pristine, white vinyl fence. It was unlike any fences her family used. At this odd sight, she glanced around for the first time. Behind her and to her left and right spanned the same type of field she was used to. Beyond the fence, though, stretched row after row of identical trees, too perfect and not dense enough to be classified a forest. At the sight of these trees, though, her eyes grew wide, and her jaw dropped. Upon every single tree were dozens and dozens of huge, vibrant apricots, practically dripping they were so juicy. Adrienne almost cried at the sight. She had to have one.
Glancing down the fenceline, she trotted towards the closest tree. On the nearest branch, an especially perfect apricot tempted her, gently swaying both and forth. Pressing against the fence, she stretched her neck as far as she could, but was still over a foot short. Propping her front legs on the bottom rung of the fence, she stretched out again. She was closer but still fell short. Frustrated, she grunted and climbed another beam higher on the fence, and it groaned under her weight. Now, stretching out, her bared teeth were inches from the gorgeous fruit. Adrenaline coursed though her, and she quickly lifted her hooves onto the top of the fence, ignoring it's audible protests. Stretching for what she hoped was the final time, her lips skimmed the prize. With a final burst, she thrust all her weight onto the fence, lifted her back legs, and closed her teeth on the apricot. Flavor flooded into her mouth, and she relaxed, her eyes closed and a smile on her sticky chin. This movement, though, was the last straw for the fence.
With one horrible crack, the fence posts caved in and the rails tumbled to the ground, taking Adrienne with them. She was pulled from her perfect dream as she realized what was happening. To her horror as she rolled back upright, this collapse caused a domino effect, and in both directions the fence crashed to the ground. Adrienne was shock-still, the chunk of apricot she had been enjoying falling from her gaping mouth. This also startled her, and she looked up to see her target apricot still swaying in the tree, now with a bite missing. Sighing, she laid her head on the ground and tried to savor the single perfect moment before it all came crashing down (literally!) She knew she there would soon be consequences, but that bite had almost been worth it. That's what others get for trying to stand between her and her apricots!
