Prompt: Mozart and the Melody wrote:Amadeus had been so excited for that date. He'd done everything right, hadn't he? Gotten roses and an assortment of other flowers for his date, put on his best bow. Granted, it was his only bow, but that still made it his best, right? As he sat at the edge of the grove, glancing up at every sound, Am didn't even consider that they wouldn't show up. They'd met once before, and they'd agreed to meet up here, in a nearby grove. Am had thought it a great spot for a date. The grove itself was filled with small, bioluminescent plants. They glowed a rainbow of different colors, soft greens and bright reds. It was a gorgeous spot!
So why on Earth wasn’t his date here? Am set down the rose next to the many other flowers he’d bought, and sighed softly. They’ll come he told himself for what felt like the thousandth time. Maybe he blended in too well? Perhaps they couldn’t see him among the plants and moonlight? But this was the spot they’d agreed to meet. They ought to be here!
Am let out a soft whine, and sat up on his haunches to get a better look over the foliage around him. Still no one. As he came back down onto all fours, his paw smacked down onto one of the roses. The thorns pierced the pads of his paws, and he couldn’t help but let out a yelp. As he held up his paw, examining the wound, Amadeus found himself beginning to cry. Why hadn’t they come? Had he done something wrong? Am whimpered, forlornly licking the spot on his paw that was slowly bleeding.
“Are you alright?” Am jumped to his feet, only wincing as he looked around for the source of the strange voice. Looking toward the path, he spotted a figure. She stood on the same path he’d come up on, head tilted as she looked at them. Am couldn’t help but gasp as he met her gaze. Who was this? Certainly not his date… Her fur had deep, swirling designs, her scales were soft and glowing, akin to his horns, and her eyes, oh her eyes.
Am wasn’t sure he believed in true love before this. But at the moment he saw that Keldine’s eyes, the moment he saw her eyes... he wasn’t so sure about that. All the thoughts in his head, the worry, the confusion, all of them halted with him as he met her eyes.
“Uh… hello?” she said, beginning to look a little uncomfortable. She turned, adjusting the shoulder bag she carried with her as she glanced back at him. Am gave himself a shake, sitting back down as he gave them a smile.
“Sorry. I just… I was waiting for someone.” He let out a wistful sigh, looking down at the flowers and his now half-untied bow.
“Oh, sorry. I can leave if you want,” she offered. “It’s just that I heard you yelp and… hey, are you bleeding?” she asked, gesturing to his paw. He looked down, and found that he was, indeed, bleeding. He let out a shrug, doing his best to look more macho. In this, he only succeeded in straightening his back so much he nearly lost his balance and fell over. The other Keldine let out a laugh, and padded over to him.
“Here, let me take a look,” she said, smiling as she gently brushed aside the myriad of flowers and took his paw in hers. She examined it before pulling out a poultice and a small bandage out of her satchel. Fixing up his paw, she gave him a happy smile as she wrapped the final bandage.
“So… who were you waiting for?” she asked, and Am was unable to keep the frown from his face.
“Oh uh… a date. At least, it was supposed to be,” he sighed. “They didn’t uh… they didn’t show.” Am bowed his head and looked at his paws, unable to meet her gaze. He still didn’t understand what he’d done wrong. She gave him a sympathetic smile as she stepped away and sat down.
“Ah. I’m sorry. That’s always tough,” she said sympathetically, looking around at all the flowers. “They really missed out. You clearly went the extra mile.”
Am smiled, looking at her. How could it be that here, in the most beautiful place he could imagine, nothing around could rival her? He shrugged, giving a soft laugh.
“Yeah, I guess,” he said, trailing off. Looking up at her, he decided he ought to take a chance and ask her to stay. “If you want, you can stay and hang out for a while,” he offered.
She looked up and grinned. “I’d love too!”
Am’s heart swelled. She wanted to stay! He smiled back at her, stretching out from where he’d been sitting.
“You should come see the waterfall, a little north of here,” he told her, standing up. As the two started to walk, he realized he’d never introduced himself. “I’m Amadeus, but you can call me Am. What’s your name?”
He turned, looking at her standing there in the moonlight, fireflies and glowing plants framing her. And she smiled, looking at him with her beautiful eyes, and spoke.
“My name is Melody.”
