Prompt: Antheia listened to the heifer taking in all of the details about her life when she was younger. Antheia nodded along understanding mostly all of it. She was starting to zone out on the conversation when the heifer asked, “Do you remember what your first memory was?” Antheia paused, was she really willing to share her first memory with a stranger? She didn’t see the harm in it so she closed her eyes and began to think for a few moments. “My first memory you ask… Lets see…” Antheia opened her eyes and smiled sweetly at the heifer and the calf. “I was surrounded in a blanket of greenness, the forest floor. I remember my mom was curled up next to me asleep. I had gotten up to stretch and I could see that the sun was peeking through the splits in the trees. It filled the forest with pink light that shined off of the plants. I know for a fact that the morning was something I always enjoyed. The beginning of a day and a fresh start. We had heard about an old ranch and I was excited to check it out so I woke up my mom so we could travel through the woods more and hopefully to the ranch. As we walked I felt like something was following us but…” she paused and closed her eyes smiling even bigger, “that’s for another time. We had made it out of the woods and there was this kind human there who took us in.”

      Prompt number: 1
      Prompt: [ 409 words ]

Upon being greeted, Morgan is immediately enthralled. Like a clueless retired couple getting roped into a timeshare, the lanky young man gives her his undivided, sole attention. So, while others might be droning out, thinking of how much eggs they are going to find.... Morgan's great find of the day is this little old heifer. They had been giving kind banter back and forth, amicably answering questions, giving funny but kind prods, when she asks...

      My first memory?

"Running," he responds, breathless as if he just sprinted a marathon himself, "I remember running."

The mere instance of this memory warps Morgan back as if he is trapped in this repeated instance of time. A younger, scrappier boy, put in a ragged t-shirt and solid color cloth pants. It is something Morgan tries not to think of: him running away from the food mart, "borrowed" health bars in hand... running away from his family. This was when he finally found himself a home: but the young forest god does not like to contemplate much on how life got him here. He prefers to ignore his treacherous past where he can: he is here now, and wants to make the most of his living.

"I remember running, very easily!" Morgan begins to laugh, holding his arm up and pretending to wipe sweat off. "I was running through the woods, playing tag! You know how little youngsters can be - roaming amuck, trying to evade a parent's calling, just to stay a little bit longer outside..."

The young man takes his other hand up and very, very gently places it on the older heifer's shoulder. He lets his eyes sparkle, for just a moment, as he tries to catch the older lady's gaze.

"I lost that match of tag too! I got myself smothered in mud, but did not realize until it was too terribly late that it really it was dung. I stunk the rest of the game and everyone knew how to stay away!" The well groomed man gives a toothy, genuine grin.

      Did she buy it?

After a few moments, it seems she does. Morgan begins to wrap up a story between his very fingers, the unseen butterflies twirling around as if helping him weave this web. Morgan knows better than anyone that some white lies will not hurt, and it is better to tell a story of a false youth than a wasted childhood.

      "What was your first memory?"

Prompt: "My first... memory?" The small blue heifer mumbled. Her rose eyes glossed over and her gaze seemed transparent and she tried to think. A frown crossed her face as her mind blanked. She lifted her head to give her disappointing answer, but her eyes got caught on the little calf. It's frail figure and wobbly legs reminded Vjera of a time where... Yes! Her first memory!
Vjera's special blue colours gained her quite a bit of attention from the moment of her birth, which made her mother pamper and spoil the tiny heifer calf. So much it became... overbearing. Her first memory is of a time of peace, her own piece of sanctuary.
"I was around 10 days... no, maybe 11 days old? My mother stopped smothering me with love for a split second, just a moment. I could finally breakaway and have my own adventures." Vjera's mouth curled into a smile and she looked back at the ground, her eyes tracing the flowers dotted across the grass. "She didn't see me slip through the fence wires, I was so small against such a vast green space. I darted into the trees, and pranced around in the grass. I saw things I'd never seen before, do things I've never done. I was never allowed to roll in the grass while my mother was around, she worked her hardest to keep my blue coat clean - she loved to show me off." The blue weanling dipped her head, scooped up some flowers and dropped them at the tiny calf's feet.
"It didn't take very long for her to notice and to start calling out for me, but my first taste of my childhood was so refreshing."

Prompt:
Beverly gives a small smile, her eyes seeming far off as she recalls the memory.

“One of my earliest memories is from then I was just a few months old. I grew up in a small rural town, nestled between the mountains. There were trails and paths all throughout the great woods and up the mountains. Once I’d started walking in earnest, my father wanted to take me up one of the paths so I could see the sunrise- he had always loved nature, loved our hometown, and wanted to share this favorite spot of his with me as well.”

“I wasn’t too pleased with it at first,” Beverly says with a small, amused snort. “Because we had to wake up so early if we wanted to make it in time. I was quite sleepy for much of the morning, but between my own bits of memory and my father’s retellings of the trip I do remember much of what happened.”

“I remember the red coat my father tucked me into, still yawning himself, and the basket full of snacks and water that he packed. I remember how dewy and wet the grass was as we set out- and complaining about how it soaked into my sneakers. I remember the worn stone trailhead that my father pointed out to me, grinning like he was my age again, and how he hoisted me onto his shoulders to carry me the rest of the way when I decided, about two-thirds of the way up the path, that I couldn’t possibly make it all the way.”

I’m afraid I may have napped for most of the rest of the way up, while my father was carrying me. But when we reached the top I remember him poking me gently to get me to wake up before setting me back on the ground. We were very high up on the mountain, able to look out over the valley where we lived. We sat down on a flat rock to wait, watching the shadows from the nighttime change and shift as the sun rose.”

“It was beautiful- something I’ll never forget seeing. I was glad to have that experience with my father, even if I complained about it at the start. I love that my earliest memory is such a good one.” Beverly’s eyes look faintly misty as she concludes her tale.

Prompt:
Carmie's ears flicked back at the question. Her first memory? She would've grimaced, but she did not want to be rude. Her first memory was not entirely pleasant, that's for sure. Carmie decided to share it anyways. How the old heifer reacted wasn't up to her. Carmie bent down and started
"M-my first memory, huh? Well, to start off, I was born and raised (for the first year of my life) on a factory. Life wasn't great there.
This happened a few weeks after I had first started walking. My mother told me I was a lively calf growing up. Bu this event turned me slightly anxious, and I've been careful ever since.
It was a bright, sunny day outside, according to the human who came to round up a few cows in our very suffocating pen. Two bulls and a few heifers, is what they took. By "took", I mean kill." Carmie looked up and eyed the young calf that the old heifer had brought with her, but he'd ran off to chase a butterfly.
"One of the bulls in that batch was my father. It devastated me. Tore my heart in half. I had never been especially close to my father like I had my mother, but there were times where he'd be kind and caring and loving towards me. He loved me, I know he did.
It really pained me. I remember not sleeping for days, to keep an eye out in case they went for my mom next. I'd cried nights in a row. One week I didn't even eat anything, for I'd been so alert. My mother reluctantly forced me to eat on the Friday of that week.
The hole in my heart from that occurrence hasn't been filled. It brought me greater pain when my mother died (of natural causes, I think a bad cold that was too much for her). She died a day and a half before the factory shut down and all of my former herd was shipped off to new homes."
Carmie's eyes were brimmed with tears. She looked at the old heifer and mumbled an apology, reaching up brush a tear off her cheek.
She turned her head the other way and grabbed a pink egg hidden in between two flowers.
"So yeah," She muttered. "That's my first memory."

Prompt: Tempest stuck her tongue out and cocked her head, eyeing an airplane passing overhead as her switch flicked. "Hmm...yea I think I do! Well, I remember the first memory that I can remember!" She laughed a hardy laugh, the memory was quite vague, definitely occurring within her early calf years. She recalled waking up to a salty breeze and her mother calling her to the water's edge. The sun was so bright it caused her vision to blur until she was able to blink the sleep from her eyes. Standing on sturdy legs, she ran as fast as she could across the beach to her mother's side, kicking up sand as she went along.

Her mother's voice still echoed in her head, "Look, Tempy!" she would call out, the wind ruffling her thick fur. "Listen to the way the seagulls shriek. Do you see how they tilt their wings into the wind and let it carry them off-shore?" Tempest nodded to her mother, glancing up at the seagulls with eyes narrowed against the sun. Her mother continued, "That means a storm is coming, Tempy. We're in for a treat when we wake up tomorrow. Storms bring large waves from beyond the horizon, and large waves bring mysteries from the deep and leave them on the sand for curious little calves to pick up!" She touched her nose to Tempest's and curled her tail around her rear end to pull her along as they walked back up the beach to where the sand met the beach grass.

Prompt:

Pluto was taken back a bit by the question. A childhood memory? She was young, so that question should've come easy to her. Surely she would've had a bunch of memories, but her first? That was the difficult one. After some time thinking to herself, Pluto finally had it. Her first memory was with her father, Eider.

"This probably has to be my favorite childhood memory as well..." She whispered to herself, a smile appearing across her face as she reflected on it herself. "Now then... I suppose I should tell you what my first ever memory was now that I remember it."

Her yellow eyes glanced up toward the sky and she inhaled the fresh air. "I don't remember how old I was exactly. I was still pretty young. But this was the first time I was with my father, Eider."

"My favorite thing to do as a calf was look up at the stars when nighttime came rolling around. On one particular night, my dad decided to join me. Prior to that, it was a few other Buttermilks watching me from a distance to make sure I was safe as I sat in the middle of the field alone. He stood behind me, observing the stars with me in silence for a few moments. Eventually, he finally turned to me and asked me what my favorite constellation was." Pluto took a minute to reflect on the memory more before continuing her story. As she did, she looked over at the heifer that posed the question. "I told him I was fond of Hercules. He seemed pleased enough with the answer and simply nodded his head, taking in my answer. He was silent for the remainder of the night, however he stayed with me despite not having much to talk about with me. He watched the stars with me, until I eventually fell asleep under the stars, as I have done many times before." Pluto smiled again and she nodded. "Yeah... the first memory that I can recall is that night with my father." [345]

Prompt: Takara cocked her head slightly, thinking. It'd been a little while since she was so young. "I remember the sun shining on a summer day, at the banks of a pond. She was trying to teach me how to identify certain kinds of plants, I think, but I was far more interested in the mud and playing in the water. The mud was the perfect kind of mud - not too sloppy, but not too firm, and I would have been covered in it, probably, if I hadn't decided to play in the water right afterward. I got in to just about my neck when my mother wasn't looking - oh, how upset she was! - and nearly wound up with a fish up my nose when I realized I'd gone a bit too far.

"Probably not the smartest thing to do, in hindsight, but... I learned. I got better about making silly decisions like that, and that's what matters."

A bit taken aback by the old cows question she stood there for just a moment. She closed her eyes to think, it was so hard that was so long ago she thought to herself. She thought to all of the memories she had as a calf trying to timeline them in her head. She came to the conclusion that this particular memory had to be her first. She opened her eyes and smiled at the old cow. “I think it went something like this:” The flashback starts and she’s laying in a stall next to her mother she was reading or telling a story to her daughter it was all a bit fuzzy. She remembers looking up into her mother‘s eyes her love glowing, almost radiating from them. If only she could remember what she was saying. Was it important? She feels as though she would have remembered if it was something greatly important. It was late afternoon she believed just in the way the sun rays were coming through the cracks in the stalls. Her mother slid a warm glass of milk her way, she remembered taking a sip but not remembering how it tasted. She yawned and curled up next to her mother more listening, hanging off of every word she said. The flashback ended there she must’ve fallen asleep warm and cozy next to her mother. Oh how she missed her mother. “ well isn’t that just sweet!“ The old cow exclaimed excitingly. “Yeah…“ She gazed up into the sky longingly. Oh, How she missed her mother.

Prompt:
"I don't remember a lot about my childhood." Edelweiss sat down on the window seat in the kitchen of Lavender Meadow's farmhouse. "When I was really young I was in an accident, and that kind of took away a lot of what I can remember." She adjusted herself and wiped a tear that had slipped down her cheek.
"My earliest memories from before my accident are all a blur," She said softly, as another tear dripped down her cheek. "but I remember a lot about afterward. So, I guess we'll go with the first time I walked after my accident, yeah?"
"I remember the smell of the dirt the most. It had rained a few nights before, and all the new grass was coming up. It was like a mixture of sweet and earthy, I'm not quite sure how to explain it if you've never smelled it before. But I hadn't been outside of my bedroom let alone outside, in almost an entire year. I remember how the sun burned my eyes but it felt so invigorating."
"I can't tell you how many times I fell, I went smack down into the dirt. Maybe that's why I remember the smell so well, Norah said that I smelled like dirt for days even after taking several baths. But I don't think I'll ever forget that day. It was the first time I felt independent. The first day I really began to feel myself again."
