Arty's stall is next to the flashy Crème De La Crème. Simply put, the two do not get along well at all. Arty thinks Vanilla is privileged and soft, and Vanilla sees Arty as rough, rude and not at all refined. The two frequently get into arguments about their respective disciplines, refusing to acknowledge the skill required from each. Coming from such different experiences they so far haven't been able to reconcile those differences and come to understand each other.
Arty firmly believes Vanilla lives a cushy lifestyle, which is true at home; the staff dote on her for her beautiful coat and gentle nature. She knows how to swindle that extra treat from a handler, and somehow she's always the most well-groomed in the stable. But she trains hard, often, and Arty doesn't see the determination with which she approaches her competitions or the way she holds herself in the ring, muscles working in unison to maintain a perfect form. Vanilla is constantly frustrated that she cannot convince Arty that she is more than just a pretty face, but she isn't innocent of being judgmental herself.
Van, fawned over all her life and always looking her best, cannot understand Arty's love for endurance. Being out in the mud and the rain, as she sees it, sounds nightmarish and foolish to her. Why spend days outside, getting dirty and exhausted when one could be safely tucked away in a warm stall by nightfall, with more feed and blankets than you could possibly need? To Arty, though, it's all part of the challenge; braving the weather and the obstacles before him to prove himself the strongest and fastest, well, that's what it's all about. Van's condescending stance towards his sport infuriates him. It's not as if he spends all his time covered in mud, and he's always washed and brushed before returning to his stall, so precious Van isn't tarnished by him. It doesn't help their relationship to have Arty constantly grouchy at home; if Van saw him out in the field, she'd see just how energetic and joyful he could be.
More than once they've thrown insults at each other. Too prissy, too soft, too boring. Too dirty, too reckless, too rough around the edges. Both of them thinking the other is just too difficult. There just hasn't been a catalyst to show them that they're more alike than they think.
