Oliviana, cold and afraid, shivered in the back corner of her bedroom.
“Help!” she called, but there was no one to help her. A blackout, only a few minutes felt like hours, days even. All was silent, apart from her teeth chattering. Then, an owl landed on her windowsill, and it flew down to sit next to her. The owl wrapped its overly large wings around her, to comfort her. The soft, green eyes looking into hers and the seashell around their neck glittered from no real light source.
“Shhh… shhhh, it’s okay child, Dixie has got you now.” she soothed.
“Are you my friend?” Oliviana’s voice was shaking. The owl nodded,
“I have been sent.” she said.
“By who?” Oliviana asked.
“You will find out soon, now hush, the blackout will be over soon.” Dixie’s wing softly went over her eyes. And when the lights came on, Dixie was gone. Often, at nights, Oliviana can hear her hooing, or they will play only when it is dark. But when the sun is up, or a light is flashed on her, she vanishes.
On a dark, stormy night Oliviana was outside, looking for Dixie.
“Dixie? Do you want to play?” she yelled into the dark forest, only the pale moon glowing for a small bit of light. The owl came down and perched a few feet away from her,
“You must go now, it’s not safe here.” she warned.
“But I want to play?” she was confused, never had Dixie said no.
“Go.” Dixie sternly said. Oliviana froze, a wolf howl echoed nearby.
“Will you be alright?” Oliviana now sounded concerned.
“Pfft, I can soar higher than they can jump.” and just at that moment, a low growl came from the bushes. Oliviana doesn’t exactly remember what happened that night, but it was… traumatic. I’ll try to explain it the way she did,
“GO!” shouted Dixie, but Oliviana was frozen in place, the dark eyes filled with anger, the sharp teeth glowed in the moonlight. She couldn’t move. The wolf approached slowly, but then jumped towards Oliviana, but Dixie went in front of her just in time! The wolf clawed her wing, and Oliviana ran, and didn’t look back. When she was in the safety of her house, she watched through the window. Dixie, couldn’t fly away, she had taken a wolf for her. Dixie was a couple feet above the wolf, clearly struggling. And then, she fell…
The day Dixie fell, it rained. And it rained so hard, the thunder rumbled the building, but Oliviana felt nothing. She couldn’t cry, but she couldn’t feel… anything? Dixie had cared for her, like a mother, and she took a wolf for her, to save her. Her heart ached with terrible sadness. On the dark nights when the moon was full, it was very lonely. Oliviana hated Dixie for leaving her, but she knew it wasn’t her fault. She knew it wasn’t anyone’s fault, wolves get hungry. Maybe it was her fault, she didn’t move when she was told to.
“I hate Dixie, but I miss her.” Oliviana whispered to herself. She needed to make it right, so she went outside during the day and found something. It was her seashell she wore around her neck. Oliviana picked it up and pressed her forehead against it,
“Thank you.” she whispered. She needed a way to forgive Dixie, even if Dixie hasn’t done anything wrong. So, Oliviana picked up her materials, and started crafting. She made herself a hat, with fake flowers that smelt realistic and tied a bow on it. The most important craft she made was her cape. On the finishing touch, she pinned the seashell to it, holding it together, representing the way Dixie held her together once before.
On rainy days, Oliviana plants daisies, Dixies favourites, as well as splashing in the puddles with her other Cottontail friends. She doesn’t get too close to anyone anymore, apart from when she’s in the rain. Yes, it did mark a sad time, she believes when someone has passed, it rains. But that’s only leading you to new beginnings...
