Lion Name: Amaziah
Lion Gender: Male
Pride: Pekee Pamoja
Pride Status: Scout
Arctic Hunter The main source of food this close to the sea is seals. Sometimes there were caribou or musk-oxen herds but they could be dangerous if you weren't careful. They were often seen as more trouble than they were worth. As the lions had to compete with the bears for food, any advantage would help. He comes from a small pride of lions that reside in the north along the arctic coast and actually share the area with a few polar bears. There were very few hunters in the pride. Amaziah wasn't really a hunter but more of a fighter. He wanted to help his pride in any way that he could. If that meant helping with hunts, then that's what he would do. He supposed he knew a little about how to hunt. It was similar to fighting except the end result was always, hopefully, ending in him being successful in bringing down his foe- or in this case, his prey. His first few attempts had turned out horribly. Breaking through a patch of thin ice and falling into the freezing waters. Tripping over the thick snow and eliminating his element of surprise. But most of the time bears got to his catch first. He'd be sneaking up as quietly as he could only to see a bear waiting nearby. That was when he realized he needed to be patient. Try the long game, like the bears. Early the next morning, he set out to find a hole he knew a seal would come up for air in. It took a few spots before finding one that wasn't already occupied by one of the large polar bears. Finally finding a hole to rest at, he crouched down low in the packed snow and waited for any sign of a seal. The waiting game had started. It seemed to take forever. Surely hours had passed. He was starting to wonder if there was a reason there wasn't a bear at this hole. Perhaps the seals didn't use this one for some reason. After waiting and waiting and waiting, it finally happened. There were a few bubbles popping at the surface of the water. Holding as still as he could he waited until the seal poked its head out. Then he could drag it out of the water where he would have the upper hand. This seemed to be the most effective hunting style for him to use. He wasn't built for swimming and running on the snow was difficult. Especially if it was unclear if it was just snow on the earth or if it was snow on the ice. Chasing after unsuspecting seals was not an option. The other thing he had often seen the bears do was steal abandoned pups. This was something he refused to do. It was one thing to hunt full-grown seals but young pups? He didn't have the heart. Besides, lying in wait seemed to work just fine for him. In fact, it worked so well the pride almost didn't need to hunt as often with Amaziah bringing in so much food. When he had tried to teach them how to hunt the way he did, they couldn't. They just weren't big enough or strong enough to do it. The pride asked him to be the sole hunter since he was so good at it. Amaziah is a huge lion. Some have even joked he was part polar bear. Don't let his intimidating size and look scare you. Amaziah is a huge sweetheart. This big brute seems to have taken to heart the jokes that he was part polar bear since he had apparently adopted their hunting styles.

"Jasiri," Ua paused in her herb-gathering to give the larger lioness a pointed look, "you need to stop hunting for guys."

Jasiri chuckled, acting as if Ua had been joking. "Stop hunting for guys? Don't be ridiculous, Ua. I never started hunting for guys. It's not my fault they can't stop tripping over themselves to be with me."

With a sigh, Ua set down the herbs in her mouth so she could speak properly with Jasiri. "Oh, that's what you call your flirting with Shujaa? You could not have been more obvious."

"What's that meant to mean?" She actually had the nerve to sound offended. Ua wasn't sure what to make of the reaction.

"Seriously, the whole 'oh, Shujaa, would you like to share a meal with me?' I mean, come on, you were batting your eyes and everything. It was obviously romantic."

"It's not my fault he found me pretty."

Though she was normally calm, Ua's tail flicked back and forth in irritation. "Maybe not, but it is your fault for stringing him along."

Jasiri came as close to pouting as she could. "I wasn't string him along, I was just...testing the waters, you know? How was I supposed to know whether or not Shujaa and I were compatible unless I hung out with him?"

"Hanging out and making it seem like you're drooling over him are two very different things, Jasiri."

Her friend just rolled her eyes. "You're no fun. What's the matter with me flirting with a few lions? It's harmless. I'm on the hunt for the right guy, and I need to have a way to narrow that search down."

Ua sighed, picking her herbs back up. "I just think there's a nicer way to do it, that's all. One that doesn't involve heartbreak. Poor Shujaa looked crushed when you gave him the cold shoulder today."

Jasiri huffed dramatically. "I only did that to make sure I wasn't stringing him along. I didn't want to give him false hope, you know? He's sweet, but just not my type. If I was nice, he might get the wrong idea, and I wanted him to know there wasn't any chance of us working out." When Ua didn't ordain to respond, Jasiri added, "Look, if I just hung out with them, I wouldn't know how they thought they should treat a lady. Besides, I'm not faking interest. I'm generally interested in seeing if they're a lion I could see myself settling down with. So, I bat my eyes, press up against them, and coax them to spend some time with me. A little brush of the shoulder, a little intertwining of the tail, maybe I rest my head on their shoulder. I don't think you can get upset with me for any of that."

Ua just shook her head as she began to walk away with her herbs. "If you say so," her muffled voice said as she disappeared into the trees.

One of these days a-coming, I'm gonna take that boy's crown

Cause I am, I am a little wicked
I am, I am
Hands red, hands red just like he said

I am a little wicked

No one calls you honey when you're sitting on a throne

Pride: I'll be making a pride once I have a founder! <3
Pride Status: Founder
Arctic Hunter There's many hunting techniques that Polaris uses, but two he is most proud of - one to catch huge birds of prey, and one to catch hares. He's proud of his hunting techniques because of their efficiency; he's able to catch and retrieve prey without expending valuable energy. Where his pride lives, up in the snowy mountains, it isn't always wisest to go prancing around for fear of slipping all the way down the hill - and with his mane that restricts his sight, the idea of chasing after prey is even more dangerous than usual. It is for this reason he is so proud of his own, well thought out hunting techniques, and will teach them to any who ask...

The sun was high in the sky, and Polaris was out teaching a trainee his favourite hunting technique. He was just looking for.. there! A small, scraggly hare. He put his tail out to stop the trainee, and the younger lion looked at him in confusion; surely he wasn't going to hunt that? Polaris offered so explanation as he silently dug a ditch in the snow and gestured from the trainee to get in to it, soon joining him and covering them both with a light layer of snow. It felt rediculous, but camouflaged them perfectly as they laid in wait.. but in wait for what, the trainee wondered. His shifted from paw to paw, and just as he was about to ask what on earth they were doing, a huge bird swooped down to catch the hare in its talons, eager for the easy meal. Within seconds Polaris had leapt from his hide-out, snow falling from his back as he leapt up... And brought down both the bird and the hare. Instead of catching the scrawny little hare, he had caught the hare and the massive bird - a big victory in their books.

The pride ate well that night.

    Arctic Hunter
The winter was in full swing, and, even though the pride had plenty of food, Sarasa’s stomach was rumbling. There was plenty of deer, game birds, even some rabbits on the prey pile, but Sarasa longed for some fish. During the summer, the hunters would frequently visit the river, but now that it was frozen over, there wasn’t much fishing to be done.
“Everything alright?” The soft voice of the new hunter cut through Sarasa’s thoughts, leading the founder to look to the pale lion.
“Afternoon, Lehloa. Everything’s fine, I’m just... Missing our summer meals. I’d give a left paw for a taste of salmon.” Laughing lightly, his expression faltered as he spotted the expression on the other lion’s face, incredulous.
“Can you not catch them in the winter?” Lehloa quizzed, his soft voice making Sarasa question himself.
“The... The river is frozen over...” Sarasa offered, feeling like this was too obvious to be stating. Frowning lightly, Lehloa tilted his head lightly, then gestured for Sarasa to follow him. Utterly perplexed by the newcomer, Sarasa found himself following without even question.
The journey to the river did not take long, both lions padding slowly out onto the frozen river. Sarasa watched as the other male walked easily over the ice, without slipping or even slowing pace, leaving the orangish founder sliding to keep up.
All of a sudden, the whitish male lay down upon the ice, uttering a soft “Here” as he did so. Sarasa sidled up beside him, responding to the nod of invitation.
      “What are we-”
      “Shh.”
Lehloa was never one for speaking much, but this time, Sarasa wasn’t sure whether or not he was playing some sort of trick. Once the founder’s belly was flush against the cold icy surface of the river, the other male stood again. Long claws extended, the whitish male began to scratch at the surface ice, running shivers up the founders’ spine. The sound was horrendous, even making the nerves at the tips of Sarasa’s own claws feel strange, but Lehloa’s skill had a hole dug in the ice within moments. Sarasa knew that he had an incredulous expression on his face, but he couldn’t help it.
Wordlessly, the fluffy lion sat back down again, hidden eyes presumably scanning the water. Sarasa couldn’t help but feel his eyes bouncing from water to lion and back again, but Lehloa didn’t move, never once fidgeted or even shifted his weight.
Until, all of a sudden, the white lion sprang forward and downward, his whole body as far as his hips disappearing into the cold water. Sarasa jumped to his feet, fur standing on end, wondering what had grabbed the other lion and dragged him beneath the surface. Lehloa’s hind claws were firmly planted into the ice beneath his paws, and, after what felt like an eternity, the lion’s muscles bunched, pulling him effortlessly back out of the water. Clasped between his teeth and claws wriggled a fat, pink salmon, the fish seemingly just as shocked as Sarasa himself.
Dropping the salmon onto the ice, Lehloa offered the other lion a smile, long mane stuck to his head.
      “Need me to catch another?”

Arctic Hunter [ 546 words ]

“…I kept following the tracks. They were so big and dug deep into the snow. So I walked and walked and walked and suddenly… I stopped”, he made s short pause in his story to build up the anticipation before continuing. “There was a river. Completely frozen in ice. I crossed to the other side, but there were no more footprints. It must’ve followed the river. It escaped. This time. But one day I will finally find it.”

“Woah” Moe was holding her breath until now, captivated by the story. “That was epic!”

“Amazing! You were so close to catching it!” Revas was equally excited.

The only one who seemed unimpressed and maybe slightly bored, was Sen.

“Guys, you don’t actually believe him, right? Yetis don’t exist.”

The other three looked at him with shock and disbelief.

“Of course they do! Have you not been listening to the story? Lua found one!”

“Yes and Lua is the best Yeti hunter in the world! Everyone who knows anything about Yetis knows his name.”

“The only Yeti hunter too! He’s amazing, he was saved by one when he was a cub!”

Moe and Revas were almost shouting over each other in their excitement to talk about the heroic tale of the Yeti hunter.

“Right! When he was just a cub he fell into a lake when the ice broke underneath his paws” Moe tried to sound mysterious. “He thought that surely he was dead, as there was noone around to save him. But whats this?” Revas gasped. “He felt something grab the scruff of his neck, something big and strong! He was fished out of the water and dropped onto the snow, but when he wanted to thank his saviour, he only saw a bit of big, fluffy white creature disappearing into the distance.” She finished as if that settled the deal and confirmed everything.

Lua sat with a hint of a smile on his face, slowly nodding his head along to the story. His great white mane covered his eyes. You could think he was asleep.

“It was a Yeti” Revas whispered to Sen in case he needed clarification, as the lion still looked sceptical.

“That’s exactly how it was. Since that day I’ve been searching for the Yeti to thank it for saving my life. But that’s not all. Yetis have a bad reputation of being mischievous and brutal, but they’re just misunderstood. Except for a couple that are very evil, I will hunt those down” he said the last part very quickly and more quietly than the rest of his speech. “I want to clear their name so they no longer have to hide. I want to expose them for the magnificent, gentle creatures they truly are!” Lua stood up, proudly puffing out his chest with his head held high.

“Such a noble quest!” Moe nearly teared up. “A true hero has blessed us with a visit!”

“You can do it, Lua! You are the best Yeti hunter! If there’s anyone who can track one, it’s you!”

Sen had to use all of his mental strength not to roll his eyes. Lua sat back down, a slight smile returned and his voice became dreamy and soft once again.

“Would you like to hear another story?”

Pride Status: Hunter
Arctic Hunter You want to know how Im such a good hunter youngling? Hey, hey Im over here, youre looking the wrong way buddy. Its alright.

Come on, cuddle up, Ill tell you how I hunt. See the problem is many lions rely on their eyes for hunting. The cub flinched a little, clouded eyes looking downcast.

BUT, Dhawal continued, In a place like this that doesnt always work. Its too bright to do that sometimes. So so white, the snow, the ice, the clouds up above, but most importantly the prey. If you spent too long squinting into the distance, you could easily trip over the arctic hares you're hunting, or worse, a polar bear. The cub giggled a little, likely imagining one of their parents falling over a bear.

That's why I don't use my eyes. Don't scoff, I use them a little, but I don't rely upon them like most do. Instead I use my other senses. Its so pristine here, smell travels without much contamination. Then, when I get closer I use my hearing. Listen to them move, their little hearts beat under or above the ice.

You don't believe that's all there is to being a good hunter, young cub? Alright, alright. I have another secret. Hardwork. Everyday I go out on the ice, and I practice. I learn the seals favourite hunting grounds, I learn the polar bears territory, I sniff out the hares dens. But I don't hunt them, no, instead I wait for stragglers, never taking too many that the prey decide to move. I train, sparring others, and learning from them, so I can take down even the most blubbery of seals.

You too, cub can be like me one day. But you've got to work hard, do what your parents say and - He paused - don't forget to eat the herbs the healers give you. One day you can be strong like me, you just need to make sure you never give up.
