Prompt:

Briartwist had always been subject to being described as 'jealous'. It was no secret how territorial the she-cat was. She'd never share her prey, especially if she caught it herself, and she would never let a cat outshine her. She felt a constant need to be the center of attention, the one everyone in the clan knew about. Even if they all thought her to be intolerant and overly possessive, what made Briartwist delighted to know was that they DID all have opinions about her; who cared if they were bad ones?
This mentality, of wanting to be known and occupy everyone's thoughts, only grew as she did. As an apprentice, she'd become particularly nasty, snapping at her fellow apprentices just for the fun of it, just so they'd complain about her and her name would spread through the camp once more.
The first time Briartwist had a change in mentality was when she fell in love with Ravendawn.
Suddenly, she did care what he thought: and she had to be certain what he thought of her was all pleasant, all sunshine; so, for the first time in her life, she was kind. She attempted to show care, to show Ravendawn that she could be the kind of cat he could easily love. She really did try her best.
The second time it changed was when Ravendawn found a mate in sleek, young, and beautiful Cloverpatch.
In her heart she felt something other than pettiness or jaundice: she found rage, pure and white-hot.
Cloverpatch was beautiful, but she was also very stupid.
Stupid enough to privately ask Briartwist for a meeting near the river.
"I want to put it behind us," Cloverpatch had said. "I want us to be friends."
Briartwist had played along up until Cloverpatch asked if she wanted to see something special.
Innocently enough, the she-cat had wanted to go across the river. "It's a secret I haven't even shown Ravendawn," Cloverpatch mewed, hopping gleefully. "But I think you should see it!"
Cloverpatch turned back to smile at Briartwist, who was glaring fire at the she-cat; suprised by her fellow clanmates expression, Cloverpatch slipped, and instaneously fell into the deep, stirring, icy water below her; she cried out for Briartwist's help.
And Briartwist did help; at first. She grabbed the she-cat's pelt and began to pull her up; then realized something.
He can't love her more than me
if she's dead.
And without sight, without mind,
Briartwist dropped Cloverpatch.
The third change in Briartwist's mentality came after the clan mourned the tragic accident.
Briartwist never again was mean. She would share everything she got, she would act as if she was nothing but a slave to her other clanmates, bowing at their every move.
She expressed nothing behind her eyes, plainly an empty shell.
Ravendawn once attempted conversation with her. She didn't want it.
Behind her eyes, her secret lurks. The death of Cloverpatch on her paws.
It consumes her each day, biting deeper into her soul.
