you may be thinking, "Prophecy, huh? what a silly name" but you must understand what this tom has been through. first he had a private battle with his mate, then he participated in a literal battle, then he had another heartbreak. let's start with the battle between him and his mate.
so, Shell - his old name - lived with a pair of twolegs. the second he was taken there he knew that there was a female cat nearby.
she was a nightmare and her name was Dream.
he hated her.
but, sadly, the twolegs wanted them to get together. stupid twolegs, meddling in other cats' business.
so, one night, they had to promise to become mates.
then, the next night, they had kits.
then, the night after, Dream attacked.
she started at the face, and, thankfully, that's all she got to before Shell ran away like a coward, but not before he snagged both of their kits.
"great," he thought. "now I have some kids with me. what now?"
he looked at them carefully.
"I might as well name them."
one of them, a light orange tabby female, he named Light. the other one, a silver tabby with patched of yellowish-orange male, he named Dark.
"okay.. now what?"
he decided to start hunting to find food for them. but, after having a soft kittypet life, he couldn't for the life of him.
so, they began to live on plants.
"daaadddyyyy!!!" Dark whined daily. "I HATE plants!
"shut up, Dark." Light would say. "daddy's doing his best."
"yes, yes I am. if you want other food then go get some yourself."
Dark huffed loudly, then strutted off into the woods. Shell sighed.
"Dark is powerful," Light said suddenly. "Dark has the power of all adult cats combined.
"A cat will rise at the brink of death,
A cat will die at the brink of life.
For this will happen, yes for a reason,
A reason that will show season after season.
For all of the cats depend on one
One who needs to find his own."
silence. Shell was gaping. what had come over his thoughtful daughter?
Light's eyes rolled back into her head as she collapsed.
just then, Dark arrived with a large black she-cat on one side of him and a pale silver she-cat on his other.
Dream and Nightmare had arrived.
The prophecy had begun.
"hi daddy!!" Dark cried happily as he ran towards Shell. Shell stayed silent, staring and glaring at Dream and her sister, Nightmare.
Shell wrapped his tail protectively around Dark's small body. "what are you two doing here?"
"daddy, I found mommy and auntie!!!!!" Dark's mewl was muffled in his fur.
"hey, sweetheart," Dream purred, stalking forward and wrapping her tail around him. "how strange it is to see you here."
Shell unwrapped himself. "I can say the same. what is Nightmare doing here? I thought you said she lived far, far away."
Nightmare grinned wickedly. "I do. but I heard my sister's call for help finding her "poor, lost mate" whom had run away from her."
"daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaddyyyy," Dark whined. "what is she talking about?"
"she's lying. Dream, why did you tell her that version?"
Dream cocked her head. "what do you mean? that was the truth."
he turned to stare at Nightmare. "hmm.. well then. do you believe her?"
Nightmare nodded.
"then what would you do if I told you that it was all a lie? that Dream had been attacking me so that I had to flee for my life? did she tell you any of that?"
Nightmare snorted. "you think I would believe you over my own sister?"
Shell pointed to the scar on his face. "how do you explain this, then?"
she was at a loss for words.
"y-you lied to me.. YOU lied to ME?!" Nightmare turned to glare at Dream, who had begun to look guilty.
"I-I can explain.."
"oh no you won't! you'll just make up more lies! how dare you oppose the chosen one to uphold Sleep's bloodline?"
quick as a fox, Dream weaved around Nightmare's body until she had Nightmare pinned against the ground with her claw at Nightmare's throat.
"you help me or I will DESTROY Sleep's bloodline. understand?!"
Nightmare nodded slowly.
"good." Dream allowed Nightmare to stand. she spun around to face Shell again.
"let's dance."
the next few days passed in a blur. that first battle seemingly had no end, but, after a whole day, the Sleep side won.
"Dark, hide," Shell hissed near the end of the battle.
"no, daddy! I want to help you fight!"
Shell had to drag his son all the way to the other side of the clearing while the Sleep side chased them.
he stumbled.
Dark fell.
Nightmare yowled with delight.
Dream pounced.
Shell screamed.
Dark was killed.
Shell fainted.
the Sleepers laughed.
and everything got much, much darker in unconscious land.
& & &
some time later, Shell woke up. he was lying in an empty tree hollow with moss strewn about.
"have you had enough sleep yet?"
Shell stood up quickly at the sound of Nightmare's voice.
she was standing in the entrance of the hollow, blocking the only way out. "you had quite the fall there, Shell."
her voice was filled with hatred. her pelt was covered with semi-open wounds, probably caused by Dream.
as if his thoughts had summoned her, Dream suddenly appeared beside Nightmare.
"good morning," she said calmly, as if she hadn't have killed her only son yesterday.
"why... why did you kill Dark?!" he hissed as he leaped at Dream, claws outstretched.
Dream yawned and raked her claws on one of Shell's eyes.
he fainted again.
& & &
he woke up again, but this time there was a large shadow on the left side of his face.
"hello, father."
the voice sounded familiar, yet not at the same time.
"who said that?" Shell jumped up and spun around, yet all there was was a shadow.
"tis I, Dark. the Sleepers allowed me to come back as a simple shadow. they told me that my death was your fault."
"but they-"
"yes, they were the ones who actually killed me, but it wouldn't have happened if you didn't stumble and fall."
"how could I have controlled that?!"
"you could've at least tried to save me, but you didn't. you didn't try. I'm a simple thought. I do not exist. but your brain believes that I'm now a shadow. but I am not. I am dead. I do not walk on this planet we call Earth anymore. I walk in Starclan, a place filled with hills and hills of flowers, and bright, warm cats. you must seek out my sister and find your own clan, or else I will forever haunt your thoughts, dreams, and nightmares. I will destroy everything unless you find your own clan."
"your sister? b-but.. she's dead."
"I am dead, though. but now I'm a shadow in your brain. but she.. she is-"
"the sunlight. Light is the sunlight in my brain."
silence.
then, "hello, father. you know me as Light, but now I am the sun. I am the bright side to all your thoughts. if you think of cheery things, that will be me. sure, it's great here in Starclan, but I believe that you are brighter than any sunrise in the flowering hills."
"L-Light.."
"do not grieve any more, father. that will make your journey harder. just know that we are here, a part of your thoughts, forever and always. and never forget, father, the prophecy."
"T-The prophecy...?"
"A cat will rise at the brink of death,
A cat will die at the brink of life.
For this will happen, yes for a reason,
A reason that will show season after season.
For all of the cats depend on one
One who needs to find his own."
"A cat will rise at the brink of death.. that would be Dark, correct?
"And then 'a cat will die at the brink of life'.. that's you, Light. but what else? what am I to do now, after so much grief?"
Light's voice began to fade.
"just follow your thoughts. follow us, father, and we will bring you to your destiny."
"my name will now be Prophecy," Shell decided once Light's ghost had disappeared. "so that I can always think about Light."
once the coast was clear, Prophecy raced out of the stump and into the woods.
"I will listen to Dark and find a clan."
he continued to repeat this out loud until he ran straight into a yellow tabby she-cat.
he fell in love immediately.
"I will listen to Dark an-"
"HEY!" she yowled. "RUDE!!!"
she spun around to glare at him, but, when their eyes met, she softened.
"rude tom," she purred.
from then on, they were mates. but.. Prophecy forgot that he changed his name. Prophecy forgot his promise. Prophecy forgot to find a clan.
and so the curse began.
at first they were okay. they were great together, actually. but when she bore kits.. that's when she snapped.
she kitted four beautiful females, half of which were orange and the other half were yellow, with one of them being mostly cream.
the day after she kitted, a dark shadow overcame her.
Prophecy knew immediately what he'd done..
and what he had to do.
he scooped up the day-old kits and started running away from his beautiful mate, Shine, before she killed him.
it was giving him serious déjà vu.
the four kits mewled, their eyes still closed, as he ran into a meadow covered in flowers, which reminded him of the description of Starclan that Light and Dark had given him.
then he remembered the prophecy.
'A cat will rise at the brink of death, - "that was Dark"
A cat will die at the brink of life. - "that was Light"
For this will happen, yes for a reason,
A reason that will show season after season.
For all of the cats depend on one
One who needs to find his own.'
if he didn't kill Shine now, she - or he? - would start attacking and killing all cats. he needed to find his strength, his courage, and he needed to keep going, even if it hurt. that's what all of cat-kind depended on him for.
season after season.. that meant that Light and Dark would appear to him every season if he didn't find a clan.
he knew what he had to do.
he dropped the kits.
he spun to face his mate.
he unsheathed his claws.
and ended the prophecy once and for all.
