name: telltale heart
gender: female
spooky story: she was named after a story by edgar allen poe, involving the beating of a heart forever haunting her. said heartbeat follows her wherever she goes, whether it be night or day, rain or shine, happy or sad. “there, can you hear it?!” she cries, yet all they ever do is give her a vexed look, continuing on as if she were another mere insanity. could this odd beat be fueled by her milieu? perhaps, she was always intrigued by dark poems and gothic beauty. in fact, her favorite author is edgar allen poe. she can recite “the raven” word by word, giving each emotion such a real feeling that anything else feels wrong, feels fake. she had only read “the telltale heart” once, petrified by odd waves of deja vu coiling around her feeble psyche, never touching the story since. it felt much too real to her. no, it felt as if she was actually there. the floorboards always seemed to have the loudest heartbeat, her guests leaving with an odd, sour expression as all her sanity left her.
perhaps one day she would lift up the floorboards, and on that day she may find the heart that haunts her.

spooky story:
❝ You're running. Your breaths are quick and labored. With each step you take, you feel like you're slowing down. Your adrenaline starts to kick in. You don't notice it yet, but your palms are sweating. You can't see. Your eyes are searching madly in the dark, trying to make out 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 in the pitch black. Your ears are ringing. At the base of your neck, small hairs stand on end, alerting you of a potential threat. Something is dripping down your back, tickling your skin. Chills creep across your body, erecting goosebumps in their wake. You imagine something horrid popping out of the darkness and your heart races, pounding loudly against your chest. You reach your hands out in front of you to shield yourself from impact, afraid of what you might run into. You're suddenly aware of a pursuer, who is steadily gaining on you.
Step.
By.
Step.
What will happen when they reach you? Will you know who they are? Will they try to hurt you? Will they free you from this nightmare? What if they never catch up? What if you're running forever, away from someone or something that you will never see? Are you actually running away from anything at all? Is it all in your head? Is any of this real?
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬?
It's coming. It's almost here. It's breathing raggedly. Its footsteps are heavy, shaking the void each time they descend. It smells foul. It's growling, a throaty noise that causes its victims to shudder in fear. Its tail flicks from side to side, cracking like a whip. It emits a hazy light, but doesn't reveal anything from the darkness. It's surrounded by a mysterious layer of fog. It's wearing a necklace of chains, which jangles in warning to whoever is near. It's a beast.
It's.
Behind.
You.
You feel its breath on your neck. When you turn around, gasping for breath and fatigued from your fleeing, you come face to face with the beast. You scream and stumble backwards, forcing yourself to pick up your pace. You need to escape. The ground suddenly becomes slick beneath your feet. You lose your balance, slipping and falling onto your back with a thud. When you recover from the impact and open your eyes, the creature is towering over you, its menacing fangs glimmering in the dark. Drool drops from its parted jaws and splatters onto your cheeks, and then it lunges towards you. Before you can react, you're engulfed in the fog and unending blackness.
𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯. ❞
Areum flicked her headphones off of her head, sending them clattering to the floor. "Stupid horror stories," she grumbled, not wanting to admit that her own heartbeat was pounding in fear. That's what she got for listening to these dumb, scary audiobooks at midnight, alone in her bedroom. She never learned. But she still couldn't believe that there were people out there making kalons into carnivorous beasts. There was no way that would ever happen in real life! 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳!

...
...Or would it?
