Marlin was adopted by an older man who was a local fisherman of the town that he lived in in her younger years of life. The man was left without a wife a few years earlier, and was looking for company. Something small and not hard to keep care of, in his case, he found himself wanting to adopt a rabbit from the local pet store in town. Since the older man was a fisherman, it was only natural for him to name his newfound friend after one of the great creatures of the water: a Blue Marlin.
The older man brought Marlin with him on all of his fishing trips, as he owned a decent sized boat for them both to stay in together. In the mornings, the older man would make them breakfast, then after, he would set up all of his supplies to get to their purpose on the boat, fishing. He would help Marlin up into his lap as he held the fishing-rod, and sat their for hours on end waiting for a fish to bite.
Marlin can distinctly recall her first catch. . . .
It was a humid summer day in July. It had just turned around one-o-clock in the afternoon, and the old man and Marlin have been waiting for hours for a fish to come along. It was Marlin's first fishing trip at that, and she had only been on the boat for a couple of days. At this point, she had finally gotten her sealegs. She sat comfortably in the older man's lap as the older man gently stroked Marlin's fluffy ears. Both of them were in a light sleep when the bite first occurred.
The old man awoke with a small jolt, and he called out from joy. "We got a bite Marlin!" He said to his companion, who woke along with him. Marlin knew that the old man wouldn't be able to sit down and reel in the fish, so Marlin hopped off of his lap and watched as the old man tried to work the magic of the fishing-rod. The old man reeled in a little, then pulled, reeled a little bit more, then pulled, and repeated this exact process a few times. Marlin just watched with amazement, her heart thumped in her chest as she prayed for the old man to successfully catch what they had been waiting so long for. But then finally, the old man stood up comfortable and slowly reeled in. That's when Marlin saw it. Their first catch as a duo.
The old man held up a decently sized Largemouth Bass in his arms, looking down at Marlin with an unforgettable smile. "This is our first catch... together." The old man said to Marlin, then carefully took out the hook from the Bass's mouth. "A good fisherman always releases his catch." The old man told Marlin as he sat back down in his chair, picking up Marlin and placing him on his lap. "Never forget that."
Marlin took those words to heart and never did forget them, even when the old man passed on.
