Competition: From the moment she was born, the fire in her eyes shone brighter than the sun. In fact, she was on her feet for the first time within fifteen minutes, albeit still wobbly, but with zero outside help other than her own determination. Even as a foal, she was independent, boisterous, and slightly overbearing; but she was the leader of the pack, and she had so much potential in the years ahead of her.
Even as the colts in her season grew into their attitudes, Mo still remained the most brazen and strongest-willed of the group, despite her strange size. She was the smallest of the season, even despite having the tallest sire and dam in the stud farm, and found herself at a major disadvantage in both her social standing and career training. And that, my friends, only increased her attitude and reinforced her loud and obnoxious nature. In the end, she was still the leader of the pack. In training, her size was both an asset and a detriment; her smaller size made her faster and lighter, but her shorter legs made it harder for her to clear the steeplechase jumps on the track. It was a double-edged sword; she'd save energy because she was smaller and more aerodynamic, but she'd spend more energy putting strength into clearing the jumps that she'd exhaust herself before the final stretch. This led to a lot of teasing and mocking, in which she'd then get into fights and confrontations with her competitors. Her sire's words rang in her ears after every fight: "Make sure you're the strongest horse in the field". In her original stud farm, she was affectionately called "Alpha Mare", because she ruled whatever pasture they put her into.
When she was retrained and sold as a 3-year old flat racer, she was quickly snatched up by Amethyst Ridge Ranch to bring new blood into their racing program. She was fast, beautiful, and one of the ARR jockeys fell in love with that no-nonsense, cocky attitude she displayed while on the sale floor. The moment they brought her home, though, that mood of her became much more than just an "on the track" display. In the Euphorian pasture,
Vēlox was lounging around with
Mesa and
Ziva, enjoying the fall sunshine when Amethyst brought Mo and another new mare into the gate and turned them loose. Immediately Mo began to display, flagging her tail and arching her neck; she looked like a stallion trying to impress a rival. Amethyst wasn't sure whether to laugh or try and retrieve her, so she just stood and watched worriedly. When Mo finally made it up to the bay stallion, she snorted loudly. "This is now my pasture, boy. Better fall in line," she snorted, then walked over to introduce herself to the other mares, the younger mare that followed was hot on her heels.
Vēlox stared behind her with confusion. "Boy? I'm older than you! What are you even...?" He rolled his eyes. "You know what? Whatever. You wanna "rule", go for it," he muttered, returning to his grazing.
With a cocky grin, Mo looked back over her shoulder at her newest protege. "Remember, when somewhere new,
always be the first one to assert your dominance."
