I drove to get here as fast as I could. Once I was here, I wanted to break down and cry. I saw all the poor horses in the pens, so malnourished, so weak, and so frantic. I immediately tried to help out, directing people to grab buckets of water and bring them to the pens.

While everyone was rushing around with the water, I ran to my trailer and made sure it was completely set up to take in a lot of horses. I made sure to bring the biggest trailer Diamond E Stables has - which means I brought out the semi. I stocked the little storage room with blankets and hay to ensure the horses would have a pleasant ride to their new home. Thankfully, being only a short drive away, I knew that I would be able to make a few trips tonight to save as many horses as I possibly could.

Once everything was set up, I began grabbing the blankets from the storage room and ran back to the pens. By this time, all the horses were out of the barn and I could start blanketing them. A few other people offered to help me with the blanketing, while the rest continued bringing water and hay to the horses.

The drive was long and silent; images of the dilapidated farm flashed through Amethyst's mind from the pictures Cheyenne had sent her, and each picture on that text message haunted her. Those horses were so emaciated, so neglected, and it made the young woman so angry that it made her want to cry. She had left Castiel in charge of the Ranch, packed a bag, and jumped in her truck to make the long drive to a run down property known as "Fallen Oak Farms". "Fallen," she scoffed. "That's ironically fitting." She drove all through the day and most of the morning, overloading on soda and Monster Coffees to get her through that drive.

The sun rode high the next day when she finally pulled into the long drive, carefully avoiding the ruts and pot holes that littered the drive. There seemed to already be quite a few volunteers there, all working on unloading and checking over the horses. Amethyst quickly parked her truck and trailer nearby and jumped out with a few old halters, donations for the rescues. Cheyenne was the first to greet her, hugging the brunette closely. "Thank God you came! We need your behavioral expertise; some of these horses we can't even get close to, much less to calm them down! You were the first person I thought to call."

"Glad I could come help; you know I'm only a phone call away," Amethyst replied. "Here are a few more halters; show me some horses and we'll get started."

Amethyst brings to the rescue a Master's Degree in Animal Behaviour, as well as basic veterinary and emergency first aid knowledge. She's worked extensively with "problem horses" that most other behaviorists have either given up on or deemed "unsaveable". She runs a rescue alongside her competition stable, offering a "retirement" home for older, ailing, and horses who cannot be ridden, to live out their lives in peace and comfort, so regardless of a horses' fitness/rideability, she'll always have a place for them at her stable.

The phone call that came that day sent Diyanah in a panic, but what followed in that call - the sound of frenzied and frightened horses in the background, the unmistakable crackling of wood being engulfed in the rage of fire, the roar of neighs that sounded so close, yet so far away.

Never had she left home so quickly.

Diyanah had only time to prepare for a trailer, deciding that if more was needed, she could simply send for her brother, Zavier, to bring in the spares. Throwing in blankets and an array of different sizes of halters and leads, packing in scarves that she knew the horses would be grateful for, she quickly jumped into the car and sped off, not even caring to change out of her singlet and joggers to a more suitable attire to fight against the snapping cold of the night.

But the moment she had arrived, she knew then that it had been a good idea to wear such lightweight clothing.

Even with the fire now extinguished - with most of what remained of the stables charred black with soot. The heat of the aftermath was evident, and Diyanah could easily detect the frightened neighs that came from within the barn. Without hesitating, she snatched up the scarves and halters she had brought along and dashed in, ignoring the cries of warning from the growing crowd surrounding the place, feeling the blast of lingering heat enveloping every inch of her exposed skin as she slows her pace to a jog.

It wasn’t long before she catches sight of the horses, trapped in their stalls and pawing their doors impatiently, flustered and throwing their heads frantically. Quickly, she unlatches a stall, revealing a beautifully muscled thoroughbred, his coat was covered in a thick coat of ash and soot, and his eyes inky black; gazed back at Diyanah with fear. Slowly and gently, she lifts the scarf over his eyes, whispering words of encouragement before putting the halter on next, then going around to the next horse and repeating the action, and when she could take no more, she took out four horses in her hands and passed them on to the Fallen Oak’s stablehands.

By the time she was done, her body was covered in sweat and soot, and quickly, she dials the number to her assistant as she begins to blanket the horses in the pasture.

“Zavier, open our doors and ready whatever remaining stalls we have, we’ve got a few more horses coming in, once you’re done I need you to come over to Fallen Oaks, at the double, please.

Better Late Than Never

It was a long day between the professors handing out long essays due in three days time, and the people at work not pulling their weight around. Ella was quite use to it, but today there just something in the air that didn’t feel right.

The feeling bogged down the normally cheerful woman to the point where even the foals couldn’t lift her spirits. Though, she had awarded them for their efforts with apple slices. Everything was just off kilter, and perhaps the foals could feel it too. Normally, Lucifer would be trying to wreck havoc and tipping over the wheel barrow full of manure by now. But alas, Ella kept her head down while she finished up the barn chores for the evening. After that, with no incidents of Lucifer, the young woman tucked the foals into bed before quietly leaving. She couldn’t wait to be able to the same.

    •••• •••• •••• ••••

Assignments completed and no work for the next two days, Ella felt like she could celebrate. After all, it wasn’t everyday that she could enjoy the weekend like she use to as a child. As a result, she made plans with Rowan and Connor to have a sleepover at the barn. However, they both worked later than her, so that left her with having to set up the barn and keeping Lucifer out of their snacks.

Ella had the radio playing softly in the background while she put up the finishing touches. After every few songs the reports would come on and they’d talk about the weather, celebrity status, giveaways, events, traffic and construction detours, warnings, accidents...

“...last week Fallen Oaks Farm was shut down by local authorities after finding mistreated euphorian thoroughbreds. We’ve been told that there was an illegal breeding operation and the man responsible has been arrested. Thankfully most of the horses have found new homes and were able to be saved. However, there are a couple still without homes. We’d like to urge some equestrians to stop by and take on under your wing...”

Ella froze as she tuned in to the report. It had been a week since she had that awful feeling, and that report just seemed to bring it all back. She didn’t even think anymore about it before she jumped into the black topkick and the hitched the little trailer on. She always said that it’s better to be late than never, and if a horse needed a new home than she’d gladly offer them one. After all everyone, even horses, deserved to have a fresh start and second chances.

    •••• •••• •••• ••••

The black topkick pulled up into a vacant parking space when the young woman had shut the engine off and jumped out. She felt troubled at the sight of it all when she made her way to check in and see if she could do anything to help. Most of the mess was cleaned up by now, but Ella could only imagine how terrible the sight originally was. Especially if the state of everything currently was anything to go by. Chills went down her spine and she couldn’t stop herself from shivering.

Not long after arriving, her friends texted her and she had to fill them in. Luckily, they were happy to await her return while little did they know that she wasn’t just helping, but also looking at adopting. Ella didn’t even hesitate as she filled out some adoption forms for some of the remaining horses. Surely the foals could use some parental guidance. [592]
