Prompt #12 "I ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴇᴀʟ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴛʜᴀᴛ; ʏᴏᴜ ɢᴏ ᴀsᴋ ʜɪᴍ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ɪᴛ."
Back to running errands! How does your kalon convince Thatcher to give you one of his diamonds for an engine part?
"You don't want to deal with it?" Radford repeated in disbelief.
"You heard me kid, these repairs are tricky enough without the added problem of having to chase down the local basket case."
"Dude, your basket case has already roped me into looking for gems...and for what? A 'Crab God' shrine? Do you even hear how ridiculous that sounds?"
Shark just looked at him.
"What?"
"I've been here longer than you. I'm well aware of the locals' quirks."
Radford dragged a paw through his hair.
"Look kid, do you want to be stranded her forever?"
Radford wasn't sure how to respond. The island, regardless of it's strange inhabitants, had been kinder to him than his actual home, but he had overheard a number of his fellow Kruisers talking about missing their friends and loved ones, their voices homesick.
He sneered at himself, wondering when he had begun to care about the needs of others and walked away from the mechanic.
Thatcher wasn't a threat, Radford thought to himself as he walked along the beach, but there was zero chance he would part with one of his precious diamonds from the Grab shrine. He didn't have the time to try and find a diamond himself and he possessed no other gemstones he could give to Thatcher in return for the diamond. He racked his brains trying to think of a solution. One of the local crabs waved a pincer at him and he absentmindedly waved back as he continued his walk. Wait. He wondered if the crabs were wiling to help him out one last time or whether they considered their debt to him paid.
He walked back to the crab and crouched down.
"Uh, hey, little dude. I know you guys helped me out in Mermaid Cove but I was wondering if you could help me out again?"
He waited, feeling a little ridiculous talking to a crab. However, they had shown their above average intelligence time and time again while he had been on Kalokairi.
The crab spread his pincers wide, as if to ask Radford to continue.
"To fix the ship I need a diamond. The only place I can get one from is Thatcher. He seems to believe in crab gods. Maybe with your assistance we can get him to part with a gem from his shrine?"
The crab appeared to be thinking. Radford wasn't sure if he imagined it, but there appeared to be a gleam of mischief in his eyes.
The crab motioned to Radford with his pincers and started scuttling towards the direction of the caves. He followed, figuring there was some form of crab communication going on as more and more crabs joined their little party.
They reached the shrine and the original crab clacked his pincers at the others. They all formed a perfect semi-circle around the shrine and raised their pincers in unison. They started clacking a repetitive rhythm. Radford tried to keep a straight face as Thatcher approached the shrine, his eyes wide and mouth open.
"Uh, hey, you, yeah you, I don't remember your name, what is happening here? I mean, have I upset the Grabs? Oh man, I worked so hard on my shrine how could they be unhappy. Like, do they need more gems? Tell them I'm working on it..."
Radford interrupted him before Thatcher went into a full-blown panic.
"Honestly, I think the Grabs have blessed you. I think these little dudes are their envoys. Uhh, perhaps you should give them a token of your appreciation? Maybe your best gem? I don't know, they seem to want something."
Radford had to bite his tongue as Thatcher scrambled around the shrine, trying to find his most beautiful gems. He couldn't remember the last time he had wanted to howl from laughter this much.
Thatcher bowed to the crabs and put down a number of gems in front of them, each a different colour. Radford started to panic, what if the crabs chose the wrong gemstone? He had mentioned diamond to the crab, but he wasn't stupid enough to think the crab was secretly a gemologist. He felt a bead of sweat trickle down his forehead. To his astonishment, the crab he had originally conversed with made a huge show of walking up and down next to the gemstones, raising them up and turning them around in his pincers and then placing them back on the sand again. He then scuttled up to the diamond and picked it up, raising it to the sky slowly. All the other crabs stopped their clacking and raised the pincers silently into the air. They turned as one and started marching off in unison.
Radford sneaked a look at Thatcher. He was kneeling in front of the shrine with tears in his eyes. He decided to leave him to his worship and followed the crabs.
When they were far enough away from the caves Radford decided to give into the urge. He fell over on the sand and laughed hysterically. The crabs also seemed amused, and he was sure they were also expressing the crab equivalent of laughter. After a time they handed him the gem. He thanked them profusely and went back to Shark. Radford grinned hugely as he placed the diamond in Shark's paw.
"You feeling okay, kid?" Shark asked, looking at him with suspicion.
"Never better," he responded and walked away, a spring in his step.
