Maya had been lying on her stomach in bed that night, reading under the gleam of a flashlight. For the past few hours, everything had seemed normal. Then an even brighter light that was colored pink and blue shone through her open window, and she squinted outside. "Is it an alien?" Maya asked herself aloud.

The multi-colored light flickered, and it took her a moment to realize that it was floating in the air. With wide eyes, she leaned out of her window, glancing up and down. "It's magic," she gasped and covered her mouth with a paw.

Instead of doing anything rationally, Maya snatched it out of the air and brought it into her room. Without even touching it, the window closed and the lantern was trapped in there -- or maybe it was trapping her there. Suddenly, she became afraid and began shaking.

"Don't be afraid, little one," a gentle voice spoke from the lantern, and Maya frowned. Is it... talking to me? she wondered, and her thoughts were answered almost immediately. "No, lanterns can't talk. But I can."

At first, the statement didn't clear things up. Then one of the doors to the lantern creaked open, and a firefly emerged. "I come from a magical place and so do you. I'm here to grant you your powers," it explained.

Maya's heart started beating so hard it felt like it could burst out of her chest at that moment! Her breathing came fast and quick with excitement, for her dreams were coming true. She had always felt like she never belonged, and the only friends she came to know were fictional ones in books.

Sensing her thoughts again, the firefly chuckled and flew towards her head. Maya went cross-eyed looking at it before it landed on her forehead and disappeared from her vision.

Abruptly, tingles flowed through Maya's body. She turned towards the mirror on her vanity and watched as her eyes began to change color, gleaming pink and blue. Eventually, the colors spread throughout her body and changed various aspects. Her hair, her paw pads, her shine, and even her tongue changed in the span of a few seconds. The walls around her reflected purple from the mix of colors.

At the same time, she began to float towards the ceiling and she hit her head. "Ouch!" Maya exclaimed before slapping a paw to her mouth and hoping her foster parents hadn't heard her.

"I have a lot to teach you, little one," the firefly laughed again.

Hikari had always feared the dark. She would often have nightmares of everything she loved being swallowed by the shadows. She would often stay home while all of her friends went camping or had sleepovers with one another, for fear of being surrounded by the dark. It was due to her fear that she had created such a bond with her parents as she found comfort in them.
They always seemed to help defeat the darkness.

But an unexpected turn hit Hikari as a war spread across the land. It was decided for all the kits and elderly were to be evacuated from the land. Leaving Hikari in fear, she was to be pulled away from her family to live with someone she had never met, and not only that but she was to be alone and without her parents by her side. The darkness seemed even greater than she could bear.

Due to Hikari's growing fear of being alone and the evacuation, her parents decided that it was the right time to give her a gift that they had held onto for many years. On the day she was to leave, her parents gave her a small lantern and told her of its properties. This particular lantern had a flame that could never go out and it was light as a feather when carried. The gift was handmade for Hikari so that she could forever have a light on the darkest of nights. It was a reminder that no matter how far apart they would be they would forever love her for as long as the flame still burns.
Her parents also told her of her name and why they chose what they did.
Before she was born, her family was going through a hard time that they feared that they would never recover from; her father lost his job and they were short on money, having to sell their house and move to a small apartment. Her parents tried to make the best of things, but even still things looked bleak. Then, Hikari came into their lives with her bright eyes and endearing smile. Hikari had brightened her parents lives. Ever since then she's been their light during their hard times. It was her smile that always helped them push past the bad. And even though she fears the dark, her parents named her Hikari so that she may forever remember that she was always the light that defeated her parents darkness, and that no matter what happens she would always remember that she would always have the light to defeat the dark,
That this light would forever remain In her heart.

And so from that day on even from far away, Hikari had kept that lantern close to her. She had even taken her favorite ribbon and tied it onto the lantern and around her tail so that she would never be separated from the light of her parents.

And and through the years, even to this day, the flame still burns as bright as the day it was first lit.
Proving light is greater than darkness.

Kalon Name: Kiana
Gender: female
Prompt Response:

The young Kalon walked towards the village, clutching her cloak closer to her body. Shadows fell like ink, dancing around under the pale moon providing little light. Kiana shivered, speeding up, before something caught her eye--a light, in the distance. She crouched down in the shadows, stalking towards it, before gasping. An unsuspecting faerie was trapped inside, and the light was coming from her. Her feeble attempts to break the trap hadn't worked, and she sat, tears running down her face.
"Oh no, you poor thing! Here, I'll help you out, stay still." The young kalon gently grabbed the lantern, fiddling with the clasp until it came undone. "Are you hurt? What's your name?" She cooed at the terrified creature, holding out a paw.
The faerie landed, before shaking her head. "Ah, you can't talk? That's alright! Can you lead me to your home, so I can take you there?"
The faerie nodded, pointing further into the woods. She shifted her wings and a soft chime sounded. Kiana looked up in awe. Small wisps flew throughout the forest, each glowing softly. They seemed to be trying to lead her somewhere. She placed the faerie on her head before following the wisps to a spring, filled with other faeries. Kiana smiled, before picking up the faerie and placing her in the spring. "There you go, little one. Stay safe, alright?"
Now, this isn't the first time this has happened--Kiana lives deep in the forest, where many mythical creatures live. Hunters try to capture them, and Kiana always finds them, freeing them and breaking the traps once they have found their way home. Sadly, faerie lamps are all too common, and once a faerie has been trapped, it has a limited time to escape its confines. Kiana knows this all too well--the lantern on her tail holds a faerie, one she got to too late. She continues to look for a way to safely free the faerie, all the while keeping the creatures in her forest safe.

As soon as the kit approached the lantern, she knew she had made a mistake.

The lantern was snuffed out in a sudden movement. She smelled another kalon and saw a dark shape standing in front of her, towering over her. The kalon glared at her with piercing eyes that emitted a faint glow. She noticed as it stepped closer its paws and parts of its body also glowed.

The kalon growled. “Why do you think you can touch my lantern?” It’s voice was cold. “This is private property. Why are you here?”

“I am sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to trespass?”

“How did you find this place?” The kalon growled, becoming more demanding. “No one ever comes here . . . .” Its expression softened for a second before it glared at her again.

“I don’t know. I thought it, it would give me hope. I-I was desperate. I had been alone for so long, in the dark. I was not aware of what I was doing. I am truly sorry.

I used to be someone important, you know. Well, all kalons are important, I suppose, but it’s not the same. I was . . . considered special. Well, not—”

She realized she was making it worse, and took a cautious step back. “Please, I didn’t mean . . . .” She eyed the kalon again, who only gazed back fiercely.

“Are you alone?” The kalon seemed somewhat less defensive, realizing she was just a lone kit.

“Yes, I’m lost.”

“There’s a village . . . .” The tall kalon started reluctantly. There was a path nearby, and other paths which branched off of it, and the kalon provided her with the correct ones to take to get to the nearest village. “Just don’t tell them I sent you. And don’t come back here under any circumstances. The kalon relit another lantern, seemingly without touching it, and handed the kit her own, smaller lantern. “You’ll need this.”

“Thank yo—“

“Now go on.” Hissed the other kalon. “You’ve already been here too long!”

The kit slowly backed away from the lantern on the pole, trembling, though she didn't take her eyes off of it. “I’ll go.”

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

She had always felt out of place at her home, as if she wasn't meant to live there. Or at least, that's how the rest of her family treated her. They told her she was cursed, that something was wrong with her. Her family was large, and out of seven siblings, she didn't get along with any of them. None of them treated her nicely, and her parents weren't much better. She could sense that they held a certain malice for her.

Again and again she was pestered and harrassed by her siblings or ignored by adults, and often she would see very little of her parents either. She was educated completely by tutors and saw more of the household's servants than her parents. And whenever she approached them, her parents would usually dismiss her.

She would go out into the town or the forests around their house whenever she could, but her parents would attempt to prevent her from mingling with the town kalons much, even if not openly forbidding it.. She recalled her mother at one point telling her “You're royalty, and they're commoners. You're too good for them.” But she never truly believed it.

It was always a relief to visit the town, but it seemed as if her family was trying to hide some part of it from her. She wasn't allowed to visit certain areas, and she always had to be back before the sun started sinking into the horizon. Or perhaps, they were trying to keep their image of aloofness. She would always be sad to go because she felt more at home in the town than her actual house.

Her life felt lacking. She was rich, or at least she had been, though now it was mostly only a large house and grand, extravagant possessions that they had left rather than actual money. But she often felt constrained, and besides, she really didn't feel as if she deserved to live in her royal house any more than the commoners around her. She hated the way that she felt everything had to be done in a certain way, as if her life depended on being prim and proper. That was the impression she was given by her parents. Gilded, but hollow, she decided.

Born into a royal family, she had always been well off, but recently her family had been going through darker times, struggling with money and the instability of their position. Though nonetheless, her parents sought to project a shining image to outsiders, one which would belie the darker reality. Now some of them blamed her for their problems, saying it was the curse, the curse she brought with her, that she brought it on the household. She would hear them talking behind her back,
her siblings, and sometimes her aunts and uncles too.

Her parents wanted to send her away, to the castle of the neighboring kingdom's king and queen, to marry their child. They said that it was for diplomacy, but she knew the truth. Her family's kingdom was running out of wealth, and the their funds were dwindling, and she knew that they wanted to seize the neighboring kingdom's assets, maybe even the throne. They wanted her to spy for them, to assist them in her scheme. They expected her to cooperate perfectly when they had done nothing for her.

Something had always been off. For years, she put up with it, but now she wouldn't any longer. It was if she had been in a dream, and now she had woken. She would show them, that if they believed that they could use her as a part of their strategy, they were mistaken. She would disappear forever and be gone, like a thief in the night.

    . . .

She had decided that she would wait until the dead of night to make her move. Looking out of the castle window, she thought that it must be the darkest night she had ever seen. Or at least, that is how it seemed in the moment. The darkness was all encompassing and the sky was black like a deep ocean that stretched down forever. Clouds obscured all but the faintest rays of light from the moon and stars.

She carefully stepped closer to the window. She could see the walls and roof of the castle, and the outline of the forest beyond the wall, but she could barely discern any details from where she stood. She drew in a breath. She couldn’t make any mistakes. She had only once chance after all. Many times before she had told herself she had to leave some day, disappear from the castle never to be seen again, but never had she actually taken any action to do this, not yet.

But she hesitated for a moment, doubts creeping over her again. What if this wasn’t the right time? What if someone was outside and saw her? She didn’t even have a plan, she told herself. Yes, she planned to climb out of the castle and slip away into the forest, but what would she do after that? How far was she willing to travel?

She could hear someone walking through the hall. Her heart thumped wildly and the fur along her spine bristled, wondering in a panic if they were coming to her room. But the kalon passed her room and she could here the footsteps fading away.

She sighed in relief, and turned back to the window. She would have to do it. So she climbed onto the roof and began crawling across it and down the side of the house, before slipping into the surrounding forest.

    ...

The forest was even darker than the open air above the castle roof. The long twisted branches and vines blocked out most of the moonlight, which she had expected, but she never expected it to be as dark as it was. She made her way through carefully using her whiskers and what little she could see.

She wondered how long it would be before anyone noticed she was gone. Too long, probably, she decided. A sudden thought struck her. Would they send out search parties after her? What would they do if they found her? She broke into a trot, knocking into things as she went.

She tripped over a tree root and tumbled down a steep, rocky incline. She sprung up as soon as she settled into the bottom of the ditch, scratched up and disoriented. Which way had she come? She looked around. The trees all looked different. She could have sworn on her life that they moved. She had heard rumors about this forest before, rumors of trees that shifted when you turned away, but she had always dismissed them as nonsense. Her parents had warned her not to come here, but that was just because it was thick and teeming with thorns and wild animals, right.

But it must have just been her paranoia, right?

She thought she recognized the pattern of the trees. Good. She sighed in relief. But she really didn’t know what direction she was going in the first place, she realized. She brushed herself off and started walking in what she hoped was the best direction, or at least the one with the fewest thorns. Her goal would just have to be to get as far away as possible as quickly as she could. And not to be killed by some wild animal. That would be good.

She had been traveling for several hours when she detected the presence of other kalons. She froze, heart pounding. Little lights flickered some distance away, sometimes changing in number as they disappeared and reappeared from behind trees and foliage. A procession of kalons must have been walking along some far-off path. The kalons were slowly traveling in her direction.

Were they looking for her? If they got closer they would soon smell her. She turned and bolted as quickly as she could. Finding a large tree, she squeezed between its tangled roots and hid under the hollowed out area beneath, perhaps once a burrow, hoping they wouldn’t follow her there. She waited for hours, but no one ever came. She realized this when she woke up and was still alone. She hadn’t even realized she fell asleep. Perhaps the kalons were just innocent travelers. It occurred to her that this was in fact very likely. She stretched out to her full length, and peeked outside. It was beginning to grow lighter, a sign that morning was coming, but it was still very dark. She supposed the forest was always very dark. She climbed out from under the tree and continued walking, intending to find the path the kalons had traveled along, but she couldn’t even find the spot where she had seen the lights from, so she continued in a different direction.

    ...

Several days had passed, and then even more. She was hungry, and tired, and was seemingly getting nowhere. The forest seemed to go on forever, and her legs had grown sore.

She was also able to find little food because most of the plants were thorny or otherwise unsuitable for consumption, and she wasn’t sure which of the other ones were edible. She found plentiful fungi as well, but she wouldn’t even touch them for fear of death or adverse side affects. Water was easier to find, but she never found quite enough to fully satisfy her thirst.

She crouched low to the ground to avoid some thorns above her head, still trying to keep up the pace. Maybe this wasn’t the best route after all. She came to a small clearing and stopped for a moment to rest. As soon as she did, something caught her eyes, a distant light, dancing in the distance. It stayed in the same place, but seemed to sway slightly as if pushed by air currents.

She raced toward the light, all caution and fear momentarily forgotten, all thoughts of danger abandoned. All she wanted was to reach out and touch it.
She ran through trees and dense foliage as fast as she could until she was almost close enough to touch it. She saw that it was a lantern, hanging on a slender pole, with a little fire burning within. She drew even closer, mesmerized, and ignoring her surroundings. Only one thing mattered, the light, the light which would save her.

The village is tranquility. A place where the sun always shines, the grass is as soft as feathers and where you can spend the rest of your days in peaceful bliss or so, that's what everyone says. Everyone who enters the forest in search for it never returns the same if they even return and if you ask the Kalons from the outside village it's because they weren't worthy. Only the pure of heart can pass the Judge and find the village by following a path of light but most are to afraid to even try, those who have returned always came back in a state of panic. Some had broken legs and others were lucky enough to only come back with bruises and scrapes most weren't even able to talk for several days only able to barely eat and drink.

Liatris woke up to the sun setting. Same time he always woke up. He stretched before exiting his room to the kitchen. After eating a small assortment of fruit he stepped outside on the soft grass. The air smelled fresh and crisp as always and the sky was clear and beginning to fill with stars. As he left he smiled and waved to the other inhabitants of the village. Although Liatris didn't talk much he was still friendly to both the new and old residence. After a short walk into the forest Liatris spotted the first lamp hanging from a branch of an old tree and with a tap a small flame took its place in the lamp and on he went on, lighting the path of lamps that would lead the lucky souls to the village of tranquility. It was his job to make sure that the paths were lit and chase off the unpure Kalons who tried to find their way to the peaceful village as not to corrupt the tranquil environment that the path of lamps lead to.

Kalon Name: Sanoja (meaning Eternal)
Gender: Female
Prompt Response:Sanoja died at a relatively young age. She had been very sick ever since she was born. Everyone knew that she was living on borrowed time, so everyone did their best to be especially kind to her. She appreciated it, but she felt as if she never really got to enjoy everything life had to offer. Everyone trying to hold back the sadness and the pain made her feel as if she never got to experience what true happiness was... Maybe, that was a weird thing to think... especially now that she was dead. Death isn't always the end though.

-----

He sat at her grave, tears streaming down his face. They were best friends. They had spent almost every minute of every day together. He had so many opportunities to tell her how he felt. So many missed opportunities, but he couldn't risk telling her. He couldn't risk losing even a minute because she might not have felt the same way.

-----

She could hear him, she could see him, but he couldn't seem to sense she was there. She heard his omissions of love and his plea for her to come back. She ached for him. She wished she could tell him that she was okay. That she was now experiencing everything she felt she missed... in her first life.
You see death had granted her a wish of sorts. After she died, she was given the opportunity to start her life at the age she died in a new world. She finally got to feel everything that life had to offer, the good and the bad. She felt as if she was actually living for the first time. However, there was a twist. She wouldn't remember any of her past life when she was awake, and she would visit her grave every time she was asleep. But without her memories of the events, it was like walking around without any closer. She always seemed to have a nagging feeling as if she was forgetting something important.

-----

The lantern she sees at night is death's lantern (or at least one of their lanterns), leading her spirit back to her grave every night when she falls asleep and leading her spirit back to her body every morning. She follows the light because it emits a feeling of peace and comfort, but she never actually reaches the light.

(This is a recycled and edited entry I created before. She would be apart of my kalon world Nuncorbis - still in development. Every character is important for the full story so I hope that reusing this entry and tweaking it is okay!)

Kalon Name: Astro

Gender: Male

Prompt Response:

In a forest too thick for the might of the moon
Laid a lantern
Lit like the roaring sun
The tales have told
All too well
Of it stealing the souls
From those that are too bold

Pitter Patter Pitter Patter
The lungs of the creature burned. The air was crisp and the coldness stung to the touch, yet heat and sweat radiated off at rates not known to mankind from the gasping creature. Each breath in caused a hurtful gasp out. He hasn't made it in time. He hadn't beat the setting sun. All he could do was await the coming swarm. Astro needed to shade the light from his lantern or face even more grave consequences. Home was too far now, his best bet was to wander the forest in search of a way to avoid the ravenous beasts that patrolled the land and hide his light. Curling his tail over his lantern, his body winced at the searing heat coming from the light. That was the price he had to pay to save himself. Then the buzzing started.

Eyes wide with alarm, Astro took to the ground running. Louder and Louder the noise became, not backing on Astro's trail by even an inch. The beasts could still see small amounts of light coming from the lantern, despite Astro's attempts to shade the light. Then, Astro's eyes felt like they were being hit by the sun. What was that strange yellow glow from? It couldn't have been day already, right? Hadn't he only been in the dark for a few minutes? Tears pooled in the corners of Astro's eyes. Had he been torn apart by the beast? Astro was sure he was currently in the afterlife.

Then he spotted the faint shine of metal. Gathering what little strength he had left, he crawled to the object. It gleamed and glistened with glory, giving out light like the power of two suns. A Lantern, just like Astro's. That's when the buzzing reached a level of roaring thunder. Ducking down, Astro covered their head and cowered. Their thoughts raced. This would truly be their demise.

But it wasn't.

The buzzing moved overhead Astro, yet he felt nothing. Slowing uncovering his eyes, his head tilted towards the stars. There the small, winged beasts swarmed the light of the lantern. That's when zap after zap rang out. Little did the bugs know, the lantern was made to destroy them.

Ah, this must be the lantern from the legend, Astro thought. Astro had always avoided the lantern. The lantern stole souls, he had heard from his elders. What he didn't realize was it the lantern never stole the souls of Kalons. It stole the souls of the beasts bold enough to touch it's light.

But a thought popped through Astro's head,

Who lit the lantern?

the winter cold surrounded the air, the frost coating
the ground and hanging off the trees. the footsteps in
the crisp snow were the only signs of life; the crunch
of the breaking ice the only sounds audible for miles
around.

even all by his lonesome, the boy trudged on through
the icy scene, guided only by his intuition. the moon
was a sight that wasn't seen that night, the sky being
illuminate by the few stars that peeked out from
behind the ridges to the north.

yet intuition wasn't enough, isn't, and never will be, in
those forests. they were thick and stretched on for
miles, even at its thinnest. the thick brush was enough
to deter even the hardiest traveler. but here he was, a
child trying to make his way through a place that was,
for sure, not where wandering through is child's play.

though he would never admit so, the boy was lost in
the ocean of trees that surrounded him. he was no
explorer, no trailblazer. the hope of finding his way
back home was to no avail. the hope of anyone else
finding him was even slimmer.

on he went, the frost eating away at his hands and
feet. with the snow starting to fall once more after
the brief calm, there was no way he would last
much longer. hypothermia would set upon him
soon if he wasn't quick to find a way out.

and he realized that, too. in temperatures below
freezing by a long run, a thin coat and sweater was
not going to keep him warm. he was ready to
succumb to the cold fate that awaited him; all alone
in the dark of that night.

and then he wasn't. as he curled under a large oak,
waiting for his final breath, what seemed like a
miracle came upon him.

a light in the distance, even through the bushes, the
trees. it was a bright light, nothing that stars or
anything natural could've created. could it be another
weary traveler?
in hope of such a thing, he struggled to gather himself
to get to this mysterious light. even in his fading
consciousness, he stumbled through the dark to try and
get to this wonder.

hope was revitalized with its sight. the boy was delirious,
yes, but not hallucinating.

nearing closer and closer, he gasped for breath, picking
up speed. from a slow stagger, he was soon running to
find it.

and then he was there. the source of the light was from
underneath a grand tree, it towered far above the others.
but to his disappointment, there was no other being
there to help him.
just a single lantern.
the kind where oil is poured in the bottom and lit on fire,
with an iron cage around the flame and a arched handle
to carry it with. it had a small amount of glass that
looked as if someone had just strewn it between the
decorative bars, covering the flame on only the top area.

but even with its meager size, its heat was powerful and
almost overwhelming. it sat on a boulder by the base of
the tree, and while it should've only melted a few inches
of snow around its base, 5 feet around the stone was bare
ground, where the fire has somehow melted away the ice.

and seeing it, the boy knew, it was a gift from somewhe-
re above.
this very lantern was the thing that would keep him going,
it was the one that was a savior when hope was lost.

and it was. it did. it guided him to his final destination.
but when he finally neared the edge of the trees, he just
knew; it wasn't his to keep.
so he left the lantern there, just at the border of the
forest.

he woke up in his own bed at home, something he could
never have hoped for before. and again, he knew it was
not a dream. in an instant, he ran out to the forest edge,
just to make sure of the feeling he had.

as he thought, it was gone. the boy knew that it had left
on its own accord; there was no way anyone could have
walked by and just taken it.

and as the sun slowly rose from the horizon, he sat down
where the lantern had left, and could only watch where
it had ascended into the sky, where the small flame had
left to.
