"Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby
Back to the years of loo-li lai-lay
And I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow
Bless you with love for the road that you go..."

Her voice was quiet, though pronounced enough for the sweet notes of a lullaby to carry through the small forest clearing. She wasn't the best singer, but she hoped if she sang enough the souls of those lost would find their way home among the stars, which twinkled knowingly in the night sky above. Kyrie knew it was her job to make sure each soul was guided from beginning to end, and though it was difficult, she loved every moment of it. Softly singing the words of her sweet lullaby, she gave the clear water below her a soft caress, watching the ripples as they expanded to the very edges of the pond and disappeared. Her voice shook, small tears framing the corners of her eyes as one small, lonely, blue light appeared from the brush and glided toward her.

Kyrie was one of the very last freshwater mermaids in existence, tasked with the important duty to gather the souls of those who have passed and send them upward into the sky, her lullaby guiding them to the heavens and turning them into stars, where they remain watch over their loved ones for eternity. Her species was semi-mortal, only dying if slain or through accidental death; and terrible events like deforestation and poaching put Kyrie's kind in drastic danger, until the point where only a few survived to carry on their legacy. Freshwater mermaids were much less social than their saltwater counterparts, taking no interest in interacting with any form of life... unless it was at their end. Kyrie thought it was a waste, thought that there was no reason why her kind should be so detached.

Kyrie wished she knew how wrong she would be.

"May you sail far to the far fields of fortune
With diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet
And may you need never to banish misfortune
May you find kindness in all that you meet"

████████████████████████████████████████████████████

It was an unwritten law that no freshwater mermaid should interact with any form of life; whether it be a tree, a human, or an animal- unless it was to collect their soul and guide it to the starry afterlife. Her own mother was not around to warn her of the dangers that came with interacting with full mortals, leading the headstrong young mermaid to question just why there needed to be such a divide. As she grew up, those questions only nagged at her brain even more as she continued to fight the urge to break the system set in place before her.
One night as she guided the souls of the forest to the stars, she had heard a rustling in the brush hugging the edge of the small lake she called her home. Her eyes immediately widened, blood going cold, wracking her brain for an answer to what she could do when presented a situation involving full mortal creatures. She was never taught what to do in predicaments such as this, so with a small squeak, Kyrie squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the impending doom everyone spoke of.

But it never came.
Image

Hesitantly, she allowed her eyes to crack open slightly to peek at the world around her. After looking around with her small field of vision, she allowed herself to open her eyes fully, freezing on a small, seemingly fluffy creature chirping at the pond's edge. A small duck...no, a gosling? She thought, her head slightly tilting in confusion as the small puff of feathers skittered along the pond border almost nervously. She watched the young animal for quite some time, giggling softly as it rushed about, almost as if it wanted something at the pond bed's edge. Then, without warning the small creature jumped in with a small splash, causing Kyrie to shriek. She panicked as the animal came closer, not sure whether to run or try to scare it off. She remained still as could be as it stepped onto her basking rock in the middle of the pond, eyeing her curiously before nestling into the curve of Kyrie's tail. Kyrie's eyes immediately softened, a foreign pang in her heart causing her to shift slightly out of discomfort. Whatever was this feeling?

Image

"May you bring love and may you bring happiness
Be loved in return to the end of your days
Now fall off to sleep, I'm not meaning to keep you
I'll just sit for a while and sing loo-li, lai-lay"

████████████████████████████████████████████████████

It became clear as the years progressed that the supposed gosling was instead a cygnet, who, with said time grew to become one of the most glorious Mute swans Kyrie had ever seen. Though this was truly an opinion based on a complete bias- the mermaid had never seen a white swan before this one, though deep down she knew this was the prettiest of them all. Since the day she had met the small cygnet, all manner of common sense and worry left her, excitement rising every time the swan popped out from the brush and entered the water to come to her. Loneliness haunted Kyrie when he was gone, and awaited his return with bated breath every night. Her every thought, even when guiding new souls every night was filled with the swan, wondering when he would come to nestle beside her. He would come back every night, doing as he did the very first day they had met, taking his spot on the curve of Kyrie's tail, listening to the lullaby she sang to call the lost souls to her. She knew she wasn't the best singer, but knowing the small friend she made enjoyed it made the small cracks and the occasional off-key notes worth every moment.

Years continued to fly by, the sweet ebb and flow of time bringing Kyrie joy with each passing moment. She couldn't contain her excitement when her swan companion brought a friend, watched them fall in love, and have offspring of their own. Day and night, Kyrie would swim over to the nest, watching the eggs and protecting them when both parents were away. She couldn't contain her happiness when they hatched, their little feet paddling with everything they could as they tried to keep up with their mother. She watched them grow, and move on to have families of their own, and continued to watch as her dear friend's visits became far and few. He would come back every now and then to meet his mate, have another family and start back at square one, and Kyrie began to become riddled with concern. Did she do something wrong? What could she do to apologize?

It was then that one night, her beloved friend came back, seeming more frail and weary. Kyrie noticed he had the same hesitation to get into the water as he did when he was younger, and that it took a longer amount of time to make his way to her. She watched with worried eyes as he hobbled over to her, taking his rightful place beside her and giving her a look of total resignation. Kyrie's heart tore to shreds, trembling slightly as she watched him take shaky breaths, laying his head down and trying his best to hold on. Kyrie didn't know what was happening, what could she do? She began to sing her lullaby, hoping that it would cheer her friend up, and as she did so, she began to guide more souls to the stars, not noticing the fading breaths of her friend beside her.

The next morning he was gone, and it took Kyrie quite a bit to realize what had happened. Nothing could have prepared her for the pain and mourning that came with death, and she finally realized why freshwater mermaids warned her of mortality. That same day, she left her rock to bury her friend by the edge of her pond, decorating the overturned earth with every flower she could find. She dreaded the fall of night, knowing all too well that it would be her last goodbye.

Image

And that is where she found herself, trying to calm herself by closing her eyes, feeling the water lap at her rock and the sound of her ragged voice softly carrying the souls home. She knew the small blue orb gliding toward her was that of her friend's, and her eyes immediately began to go foggy with hot tears. Sobbing softly, she watched the small ball of light trace the outline of her tail and rest on her nose before softly ascending.

Nothing lasts forever, Kyrie now knew that for certain. Life was as painful as the emotions that came with it, a neverending cycle of first and last breaths- of love and of loss. Mortality was fleeting, something so fragile and so beautiful and done far too soon. Kyrie knew that one day she would join her friend among the stars if something ever happened to her. But until then, Kyrie would make the same mistakes over and over again. She would continue to grow attached, to love, to laugh, and to lose.

Because although grief never ends, love never dies.

"May there always be angels to watch over you
To guide you each step of the way
To guard you and keep you safe from all harm
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay..."

For years, the legend of a guardian protecting a nearby lake in the deep forests of Ireland were spread across a small city like wildfire. The creature, which has never been seen by human eyes, visited the lake when they sensed an imbalance in the ecosystem there. That be a war between communities of species that could cause the destruction of the ecosystem, humans polluting the lakes, or a natural disaster ripping throughout it causing destruction. That was until a wildfire destroying the forest surrounding the lake the guardian called home occurred, humans gathered around the forest trying to stop the fire and protect the life that lived there, but there was another reason they were there. A reason all of them were too proud to admit, they were hoping to get a glance at the guardian.

Danu, the true name of the lake guardian, knew that was the reason the humans were there, but she was sheltering herself in the water. One sip of the lake water and she would blend in with her environment for 24 hours. Danu feared the 24 hours wouldn't be enough. The fire raged on destroying every blade of grass and every single tree that called the plot of land home. Danu sensed the fire before it even started, allowing the animals that lived there to evacuate before harm was done. She just couldn't bare the thought of having to return to them and having to tell them their home was destroyed by a fire.

Danu could sense where the fires weak points were, but she couldn't control the water. This left Danu with one choice and one choice only, reveal herself and show the weak points. That's exactly what Danu did, this is the story that's forever passed on when there's a wildfire near a lake and it's easily taken down. They say Danu revealed herself and showed the lucky few that saw her where the weak points were right before fading into nothing again. The humans respect Danu and never reveal what she looks like or what she is. As not only did she save the forest, she saved the humans.

I'll show thee the way
Through all the pain and
The sorrow

He whipped his head around in the fog, the hazy air blurred his vision and he looked around anxiously. The voice came again singing softly almost in a cry of desperation. He called out as he noticed a black figure sitting on a rock, picking up the paddles he hurried to rush into a motion to rescue the stranded stranger.
"Hello?! Hey!?" He called out, throwing his hand up to his eyes to squint through the fog once more. The girl was gone, she had vanished into the fog, simply melting into the warm wet shadows around them.
His hands shook as he continued to row the worn wooden ores, they scratched against the white painted boat with each movement.

I'll show thee the way

He felt the hair on his neck stand on end, feeling the breath whispering the words on his neck. He felt a weight on the boat, it sent the floating vessel bobbing slightly with the new found weight. Turning his head slightly he grabbed onto his cap, falling back hard against the bottom of the boat when he saw the ghostly figure. The girl, she had her elbows crossed and she leaned on the boat. She winked at him and smiled, something about her seemed off and he couldn't tell what it was.

"H-h-hello Ma'am" He stuttered, looking into her beautiful sea green eyes. They glittered and almost glowed like a biohazard in the dim surroundings. She was mostly black, her long hair sitting tussled at the top of her head, combed and neat
but soaked wet. She spoke for the first time, her voice coming out high and almost in a song. It was unlike anything he had ever heard before, and the sound caught his ears off guard. She was not like him.

I'll take thee away

Her voice carried in its shrill unrecognizable beautiful sound. He realized it was beautiful, almost intoxicating. He felt his lips tingle and his throat grow warm, similar to when he took a swig of whiskey. He felt his eyelids grow heavy, watching the slow flicking of the water behind her.

The time's come to play
Here in my garden
Of shadows

He gasped in shock as she lurched forewords, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. Her voice melting away into a hiss as she spoke fast, the sounds came out drawn long. They pierced his ears like the sound of claws on metal, and he cried out, reaching up to cover his ears. The girl roared, her eyes rolling back to reveal a change, her pupils once large and deep green, now thin and black like a cat or serpent. She hissed at him, words he did not understand or recognize in any way yet he felt his body grow limply as she shouted and spat on with the phrases.

He thought back, his brain firing quicker then ever before as he felt the paralysis set in. His body fighting for survival, the urge to run or fight melted away a-

"PAPA! SHES A SIREN!"
"Wouldnt you like to finish the story?" The elder cow laughed, tucking in the small calf and petting the soft blankets on his own lap.
"Oh i have heard it before!" The little black and white calf cried out "Nakai the Siren hunts down men and she sings to them until they fall asleep!" She rubbed her little hooves together happily before finishing. "And then she pushes their boats far into the ocean never to be seen again!"
"Well i guess i have told you the story too many times." The older bull laughed before patting the calf on the head.
