writing[200 words]; “Is Miranda here? Miranda?” The teacher asked, squinting at the class roster.
“It’s Maranda, I’m here.” Maranda held up their hand somewhat halfheartedly. The teacher turned her squint in their direction.
“Are you a boy? Or a girl?” She seemed to get frustrated before Maranda could answer. “It doesn’t matter. Young parents nowadays, naming their children all kinds of odd things.” The teacher continued calling attendance, while other students looked at the centipede, likely sharing her confusion. Maranda sighed. It’s not that simple. You guys don’t get it. No one gets it.

It was easier being alone. Maranda never had to try and explain themself to others, who wouldn’t understand. It was much better to live without attracting attention, do homework, watch TV, read books and cook their own meals. School was mandatory, but a social life wasn’t. So Maranda flew under the radar, without a friend in the world. Until they met.

“Hi, I’m Valentine! I’m a boy today, but I’m genderfluid. I hope we can be friends!” Maranda sat up in their seat. Genderfluid? It was almost too good to be true. The pink cat sat down next to them, smiling. Maranda smiled back.
“Nice to meet you.”

caerus pouts, poking their head in front of their friends book to try get her attention.
"no, cae. i need to study."
"please? it'll only take five minutes. just two-hundred... uh..."
"three hundred."
"yeah! that many seconds. please? pretty please? please please please?"
their friend huffs, moving her book up higher so she can look up and read. it makes caerus pout even more, practically climbing on top of the chair she's sitting on, crushing her under their fragile little weight.
"pleaaaaaase."
"no."
"please!"
they sit up straight to block her view of the book again, giving her their biggest sad-puppy eyes. their antennae twitch, droop, and she eventually groans, chucking her book away and closing her eyes.
"i hate you."
"...is that a yes?"
"five minutes, cae. you have five minutes. that's it."
"i knew you'd come around!"
with a grin that can only be described as cheeky they grab their friends hand and drag them from the room.
