This is more of a reminiscing memory than a story but my grandpa used to always love telling it at family gatherings, especially when the family would start talking about their pets! I really love it not only because its around one of my fav subject matters (dogs) but also because it sounds like a potential story for a movie!

Since my old gramps used to love to throw in some "adult words" in there sometimes, here's a CS-safe version of it!

So, my grandpa was about 11 years old around the start of the 1950s when the events happened. He was the oldest of three kids, with two younger twin sisters (about 7 years old at the time). They grew up in a small and somewhat poor neighborhood in southern Louisiana, his dad worked in a factory while his mom stayed mostly home but did some volunteer work through a church.
They also had this big black Rottweiler named Porky that served as their guard dog as well as a hunting dog with his dog every now and then.

Well, during the summer of one year, there were some instances of dogs attacking/biting people. The neighborhood my grandpa was a common place for people to dump unwanted pets and it's still somewhat common today in the area I live in. These abandoned dogs would sometimes form groups and go about terrorizing the neighborhood as well as be a nuisance. Many of the attacks peaked in July and most people became pretty scared of any dog bigger than a beagle, even dogs with owners. My grandpa still isn't sure what made his dad do it but his father decided to get rid of Porky to "save the family." My grandpa said that heand his sisters cried, screamed, and kicked all around the room when they heard that since they loved the dog so much.

So, his dad takes Porky to one of the wooded areas by their neighborhood and lets him loose and leaves him there. Three days later, Porky shows up again and my grandpa and his sisters were all happy to have him back. The next day though, his dad packs up Porky once again but this time drives and dumps Porky in the outskirts of the next town over. Again my grandpa and his sisters were sad to see him go.

About a week and a half later, Porky shows up all dirty and slightly skinny but happy to see the family again. This time around my granddad and his sisters beg to let Porky stay and his father gives in on the notion that if the dog bites anyone, in the family or neighborhood, it will be gone for good. So, they restore Porky back to his former glory of living in the yard again.

About a month later, some white teens from a local high school thought it would be cool to mess with the people in his neighborhood (if you haven't guessed, my grandpa's African-American). So one night, these teens decided to vandalize some homes, break things, and just be general jerks. My granddad's family's home was one of the first ones to see when entering through the main street of the neighborhood and was one of the first targeted. The boys hopped over the fence and had a bunch of rocks to throw at the windows. They barely made it close to the house when Porky comes from out under the porch and charges all mad and snarling towards them!

Porky scared them off and my grandpa's dad woke up enough to see the car drive off. After that day, they really treated Porky with respect and love ever since! Porky lived a good life with his family before passing at a nice old age of 11 years old!
