Clementine was named after both her most momentous childhood experience and her worst nightmare: oranges. Well, that’s what she liked to believe. She was really named for her big orange eyes and the fruit farm she was raised on, but that isn’t the point. Her “traumatic” childhood event is not a long, scary story, but it’s one that she’ll never forget.
The young calf was only about two weeks old when this calamity took place. The day had started just like any other. She slept in, woke up for breakfast, and then had a midday nap with her mother. After a few hours of rest, she felt full of energy and ready to play. Clementine stretched in the sunlight, ready to play.
Her mother was still asleep, and so were the other calves, so she decided to just run around and play by herself. A big beetle flew right past the calf’s nose, and she took off after it out of curiosity. She barreled out of the barn and down the hill, trying her hardest to catch up with the bug. She had become so focused on the beetle that she hadn’t payed any attention to her other surroundings, and when the beetle took a sharp turn she snapped back to reality and saw a terrible thing in front of her. She was rapidly running down the hill with no chance of stopping, and she was about to crash into a large orange tree!
Clementine crashed into the tree with a loud thud. She slowly sat up, shaking her head, when she began to hear bouncing sounds above her head. As soon as she looked up, hundreds of oranges came crashing down from the tree and landed on top of her.
Overrun by oranges, Clementine struggled to find a way out, for they were all around her. She wailed as loudly as she could for help; she wondered if she’d drown in oranges. Just when she’d almost given up, she saw a sting hoof digging through the oranges. Her mother finally dug away enough oranges to find her daughter, and rescued her from her fruity fate. Every since that day, Clementine has been terrified of both oranges and orange trees; She keeps her distance from the dangerous trees at all costs, and she rarely sleeps without remembering the feeling of being toppled to the ground by tangerines.
