You stand outside, marooned on the side of the road, as smoke furls out from under the hood of your car. It started spluttering just moments before rolling to a complete halt, creaking in defiance of being driven. Well, isn't this just lovely.
You look around, although there's not much to see. You're a solid fifteen minute drive from town, which doesn't sound much, but you can't walk that far in this heat. The ground is dry, sandy, and there's no trees to offer any shade. The pale blue sky above is cloudless. Already the back of your neck is prickling with sweat.
To your right, the road stretches endlessly along the way you came. To your left, you see a flicker of hope; is that a house in the distance? You leave your car which has shuddered itself into silence, still emitting a hazy smoke, in favor of making your way to the house.
It is a house, thank goodness, although you wonder if the house has a phone. It looks like it was plucked straight out of an old Western film. All wood, sepia tones, a little chimney sticking out of the crooked roof. A wood post and wire fence vaguely show where the property begins. There's a few barrels outside, and a chicken pen. You expect a tumbleweed to roll by as you approach.
You knock on the door, idly wondering if someone's home. You know someone lives here, at least, if the plump chickens roaming around are anything to go by. A moment later though the door opens, and you're greeted by a cheery face and bright smile. Their eyes remind you of a calf; big, brown, and innocent.
"Howdy!" She says. Her voice is warm and sweet like honey. "What can I do for you, hun?"
You tell her about your car, and gesture back towards the vehicle. There's still a bit of smoke wafting up. She gives you a sympathetic smile, and invites you in when you ask to use her phone.
It's lovely inside. Sunlight streams in through the windows, pooling gold on the floors. There is a wooden table and chairs in the cozy kitchen, and faded floral curtains framing the window above the sink. There are photos on the opposite wall. A tabby cat is sleeping in a wicker basket bed on a red and white checked blanket. It's a strangers house, but you find yourself feeling very at home.
You use her phone - an old pale peach landline attached to the wall - to call a tow truck. At the same time, she busies herself with putting the kettle on and getting out some tea cups. Once you've finished the call, she ushers you into one of the chairs.
"How do you take your tea, love?" She asks. You tell her, and a few minutes later you're both sitting down, sipping a surprisingly refreshing sweet tea, and making friendly chit chat.
She tells you about her little 'farm'. The cat, five chickens, one milking cow, and Old Betty the goat. "I know we live a little outdated compared to modern life," she says with a laugh. "But we're happy here in our little slice of paradise. Humble living, we call it."
She lets out a dreamy sigh, tilting her head towards the window. "When I was younger I dreamed of having a place like this. A real home, y'know? I place I could call my own. And I dreamt of being able to look out and see the sun rise up over the desert plains, the sky all glowing and gold...yeah." There's a gentle smile on her face. "Yeah, I like that. We're blessed to have that."
You ask if she lives with anyone else, and her face turns a soft shade of pink as she blushes and nods to one of the photos. You follow her gaze to the particular picture, showing her and another girl wearing pretty white dresses and flower crowns. "That's my darling, right there," she gushes fondly. "Love of my dang life, she is. Couldn't imagine sharing this place with anyone else." She giggles, and the noise makes you smile.
She asks about you, she's very polite, but you're much more interested about her life. How she's managed to create this little space not too far from the town, but it seems like a whole different world. Her garden, her wife who works as a kindergarten teacher, how Old Betty steals socks from the clothesline. You feel very at ease around her; she's kind, motherly. In a way, innocent, just like those eyes.
When the tow truck comes, you almost don't want to leave. You thank her many times for her hospitality, and she tells you that it was absolutely no trouble, and to come and visit any time. "Everyone could always do with a new friend, huh?" She says with a smile that makes her eyes crinkle around the edges. You've only known her a day, but you know that you will definitely be returning to share a cup of tea with her again.

Res with two large tails that curl up and each have half of a heart on them, they usually twine them together and it keeps them a totally sweetheart when their “heart is whole” but if you make them really angry they will separate it... then you’re screwed.
