how do they commune with nature? Light beamed through the thick cover of the canopy, the sky darkening as the mother sun sank beneath the edge of the world. The old Kalon sits with her paws sank deeply into the dirt, eyes glowing as she whispers an enchantment. Moss began to sprout beneath her, spreading across the ground. A blue light appeared beside her as a swirling portal opened up, a tall Kalon stepping from within. Long robes stroked the new moss as he stepped forward, paws clasped together within his sleeves. “How is she coming along?” His voice flowed from deep within his chest, like a call echoing through a dark cave. The woman said nothing, a soft grunt escaping her maw. He watched as she began to remove her paws, gathering dirt and mud from within the earth. She stacked the soil together, carefully digging the new moss and sprouts from the ground. She whispered enchantments as she placed them together, the roots of the plants fusing into the damp soil. She stood slowly, gathering leaves from nearby trees, and carefully releasing vines that wrapped their thick trunks. She hobbled back, the man watching with raised eyebrows and curiosity. She kneeled in front of the growing mound, beginning to mold it into shape. She carved divets into her creation, giving it unique features. She stroked the vines into the sculpture, placing the leaves’ stems deep into the soil. The woman’s paws easily flattened the soil, leaving a strange, smooth texture to it. The man watched as she stood, seemingly unaffected by the moss and dirt tangled within her fur. She placed her paw on the center of the sculpture, whispering another enchantment. The man’s robes blew wildly around him as the wind picked up, whipping the trees. The man watched with a slightly open maw as fur began to form around the woman’s paw, cascading across the sculpture. The vines turned to hair, and the moss to thick fur. The wind died down as the woman went silent, removing her paw. She stepped back, the sculpture’s chest slowly beginning to move up and down. It’s eyes flickered open, maw stretching into a confused expression. “Hello, Rueh.” The woman looked to the robed man. “Take care of our nature goddess for me.” She smiled somberly as her fur turned to soil, eyes replaced with budding roses. She fell to the ground, moss and saplings all that remained.

    extra. 327 years later

The locals speak of a wild woman who roams the forests. They say that as she walks, mushrooms sprout up from the earth. They say that her breath is the breeze that carries leaves; cold and sweet. The elders speak legends of the old nature goddess creating a new one from moss and vines. The say that once she was complete, the old nature goddess turned into a great oak tree, spiraling high into the clouds. The new nature goddess, whose name is lost to time, visits her creator every year on the day she was born. On that day, the weather is warm and calm everywhere. The sun beams steadily in Alaska, and the wind calms in the Great Plains. She sits beneath the oak tree, and tells it about all of the great things she has grown for the kalons living on this planet. She speaks of the beautiful Weeping Willow trees she grew from her tears, and the Poison Ivy that sprouted from her anger. The locals burn incense in their homes, and plant a ring of sunflowers around their village to please the nature goddess. The breeze calmly blows through the village, cold and sweet.

Kalon name: Sycamore
How do they commune with nature?:

The water from the overhung sprinklers cascaded down into the neatly organized rows of mismatched pots - different sizes and colors all housing different plants but grouped together with care. Some hung just below the sprinklers themselves, dangling in the air. Despite the water dusting the air, a Kalon stood there watching contentedly as it all took place - almost as though she couldn't feel the droplets clinging onto her fur and dripping through her long hair. It washed away the path of goop filled pawprints she'd left behind her, leaving everything clean and heavy with the scent of earth.

Sycamore made her way through each and every row, murmuring to them and gently brushing their leaves and tendrils as though they were treasured children. Each one she called to by name, and no name was wrong. If someone had asked her, she'd have been able to tell them where even the smallest little sprout had come from and just how it had made its move to this lovely little greenhouse she'd created on the roof of her rather tall home. She'd even tell them how much sunlight and water each one liked (even if it didn't suit a plant of its type) and how it reacted when she played music through the waterproof speakers she'd carefully installed with love.

Most of them were 'rescues' - she'd taken them from nurseries or people that didn't know how to properly care for them. Sometimes willing, sometimes not. She didn't ask for opinions on whether or not it was okay to steal mistreated plants, after all. If people supported doing it with animals, what was the harm with her chlorophyll-loving friends getting the same treatment?

Once they'd arrived she'd groom them into perfect condition, clipping their wilted leaves and carefully monitoring their progress until they bloomed. Not once had her process failed. In the end she'd have an award-worthy plant that any gardener would be envious of. Often once they were in prime condition, Sycamore would lug the more hardy contestants to plant shows to parade her skills and love of the craft. Of course, this quickly stopped when one contender accused her of kidnapping a young palm tree (which she had) but then she simply invited people into her greenhouse to show them her many happy patrons.

1 extra:

Sycamore is a bit of a mysterious creature, she doesn't speak about her past and it's debatable if she even remembers it herself on many occasions. Many speculate that one day she simply poof-ed into existence as a full-grown Kalon with an overly extreme love for nature and plants, and that was the end of it. It's also a mystery what she does for work, as rent on her large home and the greenhouse cannot be cheap. There are many rumors that she sells plants, but just as many know she'd never take monetary gain from what she considers her 'offspring'. Other people think the mystery stems from the fact that she's a writer carefully hidden under a chosen pen name.

What is known is that while Sycamore is incredibly friendly at first glance - and especially if you share her care for plants - she can quickly turn to someone who is much less fun to deal with. Many children who attempted to sneak into the greenhouse (and a few who actually succeeded) had the authorities called on them, earning her the nickname of 'Plant Witch' among the youth and more than a few urban legends of her actually being a witch who fed missing Kalons to her plants to hep them grow healthy and strong.

Many speculate she must be lonely but as far as anyone can see, she has no frequent friends or partners in life. No romantic interests, and not even family coming to visit from far away. It's simply Sycamore and her plants, and that seems to be the way that she likes it - nice and quiet and calm.

How do they commune with nature?:
My hand laid gently on the fallen tree.
"What Happened to you?", I whispered, trying to be gentle.
My eyes scanned the trunk, hand moving gently along it as i walked.
I heard a snap from nearby and I was instantly on the defense.

These woods hadn't been touched by others in a long time.
So when I saw them here, and saw what they were doing.
I was scared.
I would have to do something, and fast.
"I will be back for you, young one." she pulled her hand away, moving through the forest in the opposite direction.
When she reached the elder tree she sat down in front of it, her hands laying flat on the base of the trunk.

"I need your help, more now than ever. There are men here, threatening to destroy your children."
She closed her eyes, vines coming out from her hands as they snuck up and wrapped around the tree.
"Threatening our home."
The wind began to blow, letting her know that everything would be okay.
Her eyes snapped open, the bright orange of them glowing brighter than before as her vines retracted back to her form.

The men in the forest had tools, the likes of some she had never seen before..and the closer she got to where they were, the more damage she could see they have done. The trees were broken down, cut up..it enraged her. She pulled herself up into one of the trees, overlooking the destruction of her home. "You will regret coming here." She clutched the trees limbs, her vines enter twining with each and every branch. They quickly spread to the other trees, the wind began picking up and then.

WHACK !

A vine, seemingly come to life, reached itself down and smacked one of the men.
First, there was confusion.
Then there was panic, as more and more of the trees came to life.
Men were becoming entangled, screaming to be rescued.
It was what they deserved.
She jumped down to the ground, moving through the trees as she came upon one man, pulling him in closer to her.
"You ever come back here, with your death machines and violence. You..will..regret...it"
She threw him to the ground, disappearing back into the trees as she released everyone from the hold on the vines.

I have become the caretaker of this place. My home.

How do they commune with nature?:
I close my eyes, and see my forest.

Lush, beautiful, alive. Teeming with insects and chittering birds. Warm yellow sunlight streaming through the tree leaves, dappling the forest floor on which I walk upon. My bare feet feel every grain of dirt, every twig, and beneath, a warm and gentle humming that absorbs into my skin, into my veins.

I see golden butterflies perched upon pink flowers. I see vines, tendrils stretched out in many directions to cradle rocks and trees in their embrace. I reach out to touch them, and they sigh. I touch the flowers, and they sing. Birds perch upon my shoulder, whispering secrets in their mother tongue, but I understand.

I hear it all.

I reach a clearing in the middle of my forest. A willow tree stands in the middle, its leaves brushing the surface of the pond. I touch the water, and feel the ripples pulse through me like another heartbeat. I touch the bark of the tree, and I hear its voice. Familiar; as wise as a mother, but as giggly as a child. They are all mine. My children, my family, my world.

A cold breeze blows through the clearing, rustling my hair and sending a chill down my spine.

I open my eyes, and see my forest.

Dull skies and gray clouds. Soot clings to my feet and leaves trails wherever I walk. The trees are broken, black and charred, like the remainder of my heart. The birds don't sing here anymore.

The wind blows colder. There is no protection here, nor is there anything to protect.

My children. My family. My home.

All gone.

I can't feel the ground breathing beneath my feet. I search to no avail to find just one flower bud, just one sign of life. The vines are brittle and hard. When touched they snap, but I cannot hear them cry. I cry for them instead.

The pond is dry. The willow tree, stripped of leaves, burnt almost beyond recognition. I place my hands on her, willing to hear her voice again.

Very faintly, I hear noises. A child screaming. Someone crying. A mix of panicked voices, mixing with one another in a horrible symphony of fear and pain.

Dark tears stain my face as I curl up in her roots, mourning what I have lost, and wishing more than anything to have it all back.

1 extra:

I'm not sure who came first; me or the forest. My earliest memories are hazy but I know I've always been here, and that I've always heard their voices. The trees and bushes, the water and wind. When birds talk, I understand. Even the rocks, although they don't say as much.

All it takes is a touch. My feet on the ground hear the deep, slow voice of Mother Earth. Her voice is aged and soothing; she's been here the longest.

My hands allow me to communicate with everything else. Each thing has a voice, whispering in my head, and I talk back to them. They teach me, guide me, love me. I've never known another family.

When the fire came, I could do nothing to protect my home. It was too fierce, too consuming. I heard their screams as the trees fell, the leaves burnt, the animals perished. I felt Mother Earth shudder as she wept.

When the land was left blackened and desolate, I felt an emptiness inside of me I didn't know how to heal. All of me hurt, all of me was distraught. The worst thing was the silence; there was nothing to hear apart from my tangled web of thoughts.

For many nights and days I wandered through the wreckage of my home. Sometimes I found myself curled up, collapsing in on myself, but something kept forcing my legs to keep walking. Mother Earth was silent in her grieving but I had to believe that she wanted me to keep going, to restore my forest, my home.

Recently my feet have begun to tingle as I walk. I follow the path they guide me on in hopes they will lead me to a sign of life, and I can help my forest to be reborn.
