in hindsight, maybe she should’ve realized something was a little odd when jora started chanting something in a different language and smoke started spiraling around the room. then again, how was she expected to figure out she'd just gotten her self trapped on a date with the devil chaperoning?
“so”, smirks that stupid little demon waiter, smoke still drifting off him from the summoning ritual, holding a pen and notebook, “what can I get you ladies tonight? how about the special?”
“i’ll have number three on the fish menu. medium rare,” jora orders casually, as if she didn’t trick poor nayeli into a discount literal date with the devil, “what about you, eli?”
“don’t call me that,” she mutters, “i’ll just have water if thats ok. not to be rude but, I really don’t trust the devil to make me food that isn’t poisoned.”
“and you trust me to not poison your water?”
her eyes widen for a moment. maybe she should just not order anything-
“nonsense,” waves off jora easily, “shihab here would never, right?”
“yes, yes. hana said I wasn’t aloud to poison anyone this decade. You’re both safe,” he assures half-heartedly as if it it was a real disappointment. Then again, he’s basically satan and it might actually be a disappointment, “also, I have to say I’m not actually the devil. I do know lucifer personally, but I am not he.”
can he read minds too now?
“yes, shihab. we remember. you’re still super cool and know lucifer. we get it," jora gives him a patronizing smile, “if it’s any consolation though, i’d really love to eat this week so if you could just,” she makes a vague shooing gesture, “shoo off that’d be really great.”
he gets the hint and makes a dignified exit with his head held high, shooting jora an annoyed look as he walks out of sight.
“I know he’s a demon and all but that was a little rude, jora,” chides nayeli, “it isn’t polite to tell people to “shoo off” like you not so delicately put it.”
“that little gremlin would think somethings wrong if I wasn’t a little rude to him constantly," jora scoffs as nayeli’s face only grows more scandalized, “I just summoned a demon on our date and your scandalized over the fact I was a little rude to him?”
“I’m still in shock over that I suppose”, she admits, “but don’t think I’m not mad. i’m essentially fuming, you hear? you’re in big trouble.”
jora only looks amused at her threat, “your even more adorable when you think you threaten me in any way, you know? I didn’t think it was possible, but you just get cuter and cuter, nayeli.”
“i am not cute," she objects, “i am trained in three forms of hand to hand combat and I can have you pinned against the floor before you can say the word “cute”.”
“adorable.”

At 6:30, my date arrived to pick me up. We met though an online dating app, and had been seeing each other
for a few weeks or so now, but on a more casual basis. This was our first “real” date, he had said to me. He
opened the car door for me, making sure I was safely in the car before closing the door and climbing into the
driver’s side. “A gentleman,” I murmured to myself. The drive to the restaurant was calm, as we made small
talk about work and other things.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were seated promptly in a quiet corner of the place. We order some
appetizers and a few drinks as well. Picking up our conversation from the car, we laughed about stories from
the past and reminisced how easy life was as young kids.

As the food arrives, my stomach growls in hunger as a blush from embarrassment. He just laughs it off, saying
he’s quite hungry too. We finished our meal and contemplated dessert. Settling on the cheesecake, our conversation
starts heading toward a more serious direction.

“Uh-oh...” I thought to myself, “This isn’t supposed to happen...”
He clears his throat, takes my hand and looks me in the eye.

“I wasn’t sure when to tell you this, but I believe now is right. Aiko, I love you.”

I smiled gracefully, taking in his sudden confession. My mind was racing with anxiety, “He dropped the L-bomb?!
This wasn’t supposed to happen!” I began looking around carefully for a way out. I needed out, I wasn’t ready
for a serious relationship, this was supposed to be a casual fling! My eyes rested on the bathroom doors, at the
other end of the hall. I just needed a polite excuse to get there... A loud crash sound came from the kitchen,
and I took that as my chance to escape. I “accidentally” knocked over a water glass, spilling some on my dress.

“Oh no! I’m so clumsy... Excuse me while I go tidy up!” And flashed him a smile. He nodded and I hastily excused myself.
I walked calmly to the bathroom and pulled out my phone, dialing for backup as soon as the door was closed.

“Hey Aiko what’s up?” The voice on the other end picked up. Dahlia, my best friend, she’d know what to do!

“L-bomb was dropped, I need an escape!” I said, the words tumbling out of my mouth quickly. “What do I do?!”
I looked around the room in a hurry.

“Relax, I’m on my way,” Dahlia responded nonchalantly. “Look for a way or excuse to get out of the
restaurant and I’ll meet you out back okay?”

“Alright, but hurry!” I stuttered anxiously before hanging up. Glancing around the room again, my eyes caught
the edge of the window. “I can fit through there...” I hoisted myself on to the counter, opened the window and
looked out at the parking lot. I carefully climbed out the window and landed on the pavement below.

Dahlia pulled up a few moments later. “Did I just see you crawl out the bathroom window?” She laughed with an
impressed look on her face.

“Uh... yeah...” I laughed nervously as I climbed into her car. As we drove away, I looked back at the restaurant.

“This is gonna be a story for the ages.”
