What is their favorite thing?:
"My favorite thing? Oh, definitely this pocket watch here."
She digs around in one of her pockets and pulls it out, placing it on the table. It's faded gold, with a few scrapes and scratches, with an attached chain that's seen better days. There's an engraving on the front of a butterfly, but it's not one you recognize.
"It's neat, huh?" She says. "My grandfather gave it to me at a family reunion when I was little." She pauses, her forehead creasing slightly. "I mean...I think it was. There were a lot of people there. No one seems to know who gave it to me exactly, but...it must have been one of them, right?" She laughs, although it sounds a bit off.
You notice it doesn't seem to be working, and comment on that.
"Oh yeah," she replies with a wave of her hand. "It's a bit funny like that. Starts ticking at random times, but never for the same amount of time. Always on that extra day in leap year. Sometimes during solar eclipses. But I don't think about it too much," she adds with a shrug. "If I concentrate on it too hard, it's like I forget what I was thinking about."
You ask if you can see what it looks like inside, and she opens it for you. The first thing you notice is that there's five hands, not three. And there are no numbers, only symbols you can't entirely make out. It's semi-transparent, so you can see the unmoving cogs behind the clock face. They almost seem to be in the shape of a butterfly, too.
"Neat, huh?" She says, sounding proud. "No other watch like this one, I'd bet."
When you're finished looking, she reaches out to close it. Just before she does, you notice a tiny number 3 etched in to the underside of the cover. Before you can question it, she's already put it back in her pocket. You ask why she carries it around if it doesn't work.
"Always ends up with me somehow," she says casually. "I've tried leaving it at home before, but it'll show up in my pocket, or my bag...maybe I just take it without thinking. I don't know, it's a habit now, I just take it anyway. I know it's strange," she continues. "And it doesn't seem realistic, like...a pocket watch that appears out of nowhere? Doesn't tell the time properly? Ticks when it feels like it? I suppose it is strange, I know it's strange, and I guess really I don't even understand...how..."
She trails off. An odd look seems to cross her face. Then her expression clears, and she blinks at you. "Sorry, what were we talking about?"
Would they push said thing off a table?:
She chuckles at the question, rubbing the back of her neck and looking rather guilty. "I'm not gonna lie, I might have once or twice. Or maybe a bit more than that. When I was younger I didn't understand why it wouldn't work, so I tried a few, uh...alternative methods."
You ask what she means, and she laughs again.
"Ah, you know...kid logic. Push it off a table. Throw it at a wall. Stomp on it. Maybe drop it in the fish tank. Never damaged it though," she adds for good measure. "You'd think it'd be broken by now, but nope, still looks exactly the same as when I first got it. Well," she hesitates. "Mostly the same. Some of the hands are in different places now, pointing at different things. Though I'm not really sure what time it's trying to tell."
She props an elbow up on the table, resting her head on her hand. Seemingly without realizing, she lets out a soft humming noise. "I wonder what it all means..."
