Mapleblaze has always had an incredible sense of direction and distance, Ravenstar had taught him how to Stargaze. 'To look upon their ancestors the Stars and find the way forward', she would say. He's often assigned head of patrols to guide his allies during the night. 'Find the way forward' she said. That was how he was never lost or led from his path.
Except for once...
During the last meeting between Dreamclan and Cedarclan.
The Place of Sky Reach is a meeting place high in the mountains, he thought that the Stars would always be visible there and... he was wrong. He sat at Ravenstar's side, "I must stay," She warned him, "and speak privately with Foxlight, Heatherstar, and Seastorm." He nodded, though his confusion was evident. "I need you to do something for me, Maplep-" She stopped herself, with a warm smile. "Maple
blaze. I need you to guide Dreamclan down the mountain."
His pride was quickly tempered. It was a long way to go, to guide so many cats. "Surely there's someone else," His fur bristled in anxiety, "I couldn't possibly... t-the
whole clan, I don't..." He mumbled fearfully. Ravenstar's gaze remained steady, she was sure of his capabilities. "I know that you can move forward, and I know that the Stars have opened themselves to you. You need nothing more, young Mapleblaze, than to look up and accept them."
"Of course, Ravenstar." He bowed his head to her and Ravenstar announced their departure.
He lept from the lip of the cave, his clan at his heels. Out he looked on the expanse of rocky terrain, he looked up and saw the darkening sky, they needed to move fast. "Quickly now!" He called. The further they went, the further the dark clouds spread. Mapleblaze looked to the sky, frustrated, he gasped in relief. The Guiding Star! As long as he knew where the brightest star in the sky was, he could get them home...
Or so he thought. A small white tuft of ice landed on his upward pointed nose. It was snow. There were no Stars to look upon tonight. "Surely they wouldn't be so cruel?" He asked Pebblestripe. "Perhaps they are testing you?" He suggested. Mapleblaze suddenly felt cold. What a horrifying thought. He led them forward, continuing to safely guide the clan past the occasional lingering scent of wolves. The snow fell heavier, he continued to promise he knew the way, but he had lost the Stars' guidance and now he had gotten them all lost as well. Not only that, he'd soon come to realize... they were on the wrong side of the mountain. An eerie fog laden land lay before them, he had a decision to make. "Pebblestripe, scout ahead for us and find a place we can shelter for the night," Mapleblaze spoke softly, "We're going to have to wait this out."
So they waited out the night and returning in the morning without fault. That they knew of, that is of course.
