Splashdream awoke with a start. His dreams had been filled with worries about the clan, in them his clan mates caught a terrible illness that spread like wildfires and resisted all his attempts to help mallowflight cure them. Kits wailing for their mothers milk while they lay fox lengths away reeking of death.
Splashdream's heart was racing and his paws itched to run as fast as possible. He took a deep breath and gave his chest fur a couple quick licks. His eyes shone as he looking up at silverpelt. "please, if this is a sign, help me to be brave!" splashdream sighed. Splashdream was named for his prophetic dreams from starclan.
Suddenly something caught his attention. A white tail tip disappearing into the night. Splashdream quickly bounded after the strange cat. The wind whistling in his ears. Eventually he caught up with the stranger. The sweet smell of poppy hung in the air. The cat sat staring into the distance. The cat sat with her tail tucked around her paws, the confidence of a leader. The she cat had deep green eyes and a orange tabby coat with white on her tail and one paw.
"who are you?" meowed splashdream. He was used to cat visiting him but he didn't recognize this she cat.
The cat didn't make any motion to show she heard splashdream but instead began to speak.
"my name is poppystar, I was the leader of oakclan when this stream ran with water that sparkled and fish that fed my cats." finally the cat turned to face splashdream. Poppystar had a scar that went from the left side of her face across her eyes and down. With a scar like that there was no way she could see! So what could she be looking at?
Splashdream padded forward to sit beside the fallen leader. Looking out splashdream's fur prickled with amazement. In front of him was a sparkling ocean that stretched out as far as he could see. For a moment he thought he might still be sleeping. Splashdream looked closer at the beautiful sight. It wasn't an ocean or silverpelt, it was hundreds of tiny rocks!
"this is what cats call 'the ocean of wisdom'. Distraught cats have come here for moons to seek answers." poppystar meowed cooly.
"has it really helped them?" splashdream asked though he felt he already knew the answer.
"I will let you find that out for yourself." with that the she cat disappeared as quickly as she appeared.
Splashdream spent what seemed like a life time staring out into the ocean. He felt peaceful and calm. Splashdream knew he could handle anything his clan mates threw at him from that point on.

Cat Name: Phantomheart
Clan: Snakeclan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: Female
Age: 28 moons

Prompt:

Even since before joining Snakeclan, Phantomheart has always loved one thing above all else: sunrises. And to understand how she found her secret spot, you have to realize that Snakeclan territory is located within a valley, and their camp is surrounded by forest. Naturally, the sunrise is almost impossible to see from camp, or anywhere else on the territory for that matter.

That was until the day she went searching.

Phantomheart had gotten permission from her leader to take the day to explore. She had only been with the clan for about five moons, but that had been plenty enough time for her to get sunrise-sick. So she headed out at sunhigh, hoping she would reach the edge of the territory by sunrise in order to properly scope out the best morning sun-bathing spots. The black-and-white tabby just knew there had to be someplace she could watch the sun rise without climbing trees, which she wasn’t very good at mind you. So she headed east, all the way to the boundary cliffside. There just had to be.

The edges of the territory were mostly walled off by mountains, and typically Snakeclan territory ended with the trees. Phantomheart spanned the entire length of clan territory, praying to Starclan that she wouldn’t have to leave clan territory to find a decent spot, until she saw a wall of stone, a cliff, that reached into the trees. She picked her path carefully, and was able to successfully find a ledge that led up the side and wrapped around the east side of the cliff, still technically in clan territory! There she found the rocky outcropping had a small indentation, a lip, that hung over and made a sort of canopy over an opening. It was just the right size for a cat her size, and was even flat enough to comfortably lay.

Up until this point, she had been so excited to have found a place higher than the trees that she didn’t realize it was almost sunrise. Just as she turned around to see what the view might hold, the sun poked up from over the horizon. What she saw was beautiful…between her and the sunrise was a gorge, splitting the mountain in half as if it was making way just for the sun. If the gorge hadn’t been there, or even just a few feet to either side, the sun would be partially obstructed, and the sunrise would have been impossible to see. The way it stood now, she could see the sunrise in its full glory. It was as if Starclan had made this place just for her. So, as she lay down to enjoy the first sunrise she had seen in moons, she fully intended to keep it that way...

Just for her.

Cat Name: Ebonywhisper
Clan: Valin Enclave
Rank: Scribe / Scairis

Gender: nonbinary (born female)
Age: 22 moons

Prompt: 581 words, 3,311 characters

Ebonywhisper peered out of their den, scanning the dark camp. It looked like everyone had finally gone to sleep. About time. They thought, flipping their tail irritably and sliding quietly out of the small cave. If they were lucky, no one would notice they were gone, and try to track them down again like last time.

They padded carefully through camp, keeping their steps quiet, until they reached the exit, and bolted. They couldn't help but chuckle to themselves as they ran down the slope and through the trees, heading northwest - it had been much too long since they last had time to themselves - it was starting to make them testy.

They winced at the memory of when they'd snapped at one of the younger cats in the Enclave the other evening. They'd later apologized and made up with them, but what really got to them was that Earthpad had looked so hurt. They weren't even the one they'd insulted!

Ebonywhisper's thoughts shifted when they made it to the river, Fryllr, in particular, and they stopped to sniff the reeds shivering in the cold breeze. Nothing new here it seemed, just some old opposum scent, not much to worry about. They trotted down the bank, making sure to keep to the dry grass. Their tail waved above them happily as they spotted the bend in the river. Nothing like a night stroll.

Trotting up the slowly increasing incline, their mind wandered again. Why had Earthpad been so upset, anyway? They were all on good terms again ... had calling the kit a duckbrain really been that vile? They sighed absentmindedly. I never imagined I'd be so worked up over what someone thinks of me. They stopped momentarily to shake out their pelt, trying to ward the thoughts away - at least until they made it to the falls.

Pricking their ears, they could hear the sound of falling water, not too far ahead now. Climbing up the ridge, they squinted as they surveyed for any danger, sniffing cautiously. Smells like water. They quickly padded down to the edge of the water, and after a bit of preparation, jumped out onto the nearest stone, nearly sliding right off. They muttered a curse as they dug into the rock with their claws, making a terrible scraping noise, but at least it kept them steady.

Shifting their paws under them to make sure they had a good grip, they reached out to the next stone more carefully this time, slowly picking their way along the loosely gathered steps until they could feel the mist from the waterfall on their fur, making them shiver. They were nearly there, now. Bunching up, they leapt up onto the mountain ridge, wriggling their way up and into the cave behind the falls.

Finally. They sighed in relief, stretching their back out before continuing further into the cave, the drip of water echoing through it. Turning the corner, their whiskers quivered happily as a small collection of glowing stones came into view, clustered together in the central pool. Wandering close to the edge of the water, they found the moss nest they'd dragged up here in the warmer season, softening it up a bit with their claws before they settled in.

This place is perfect. They thought, laying their head down and admiring the shimmer of the water reflecting on the cave ceiling. Now I can actually think. With that, they closed their eyes, their mind drifting to more peaceful thoughts.

Cat Name: Blackfoot
Clan: Cats of the Whispering Wood
Rank: Deputy

Gender: Male
Age: 36 moons

Prompt:

xxxxxBlackfoot looked around the camp. Swiftstar was still in her den, and Stormface was asleep on the object they called a “Couch”. The sun’s rays began to fade, slowly disappearing behind the trees that formed the forest. Coming up with an excuse incase he was caught, he slid out the flap which led to another strange flap, which then led outside. The sky was purple and orange, the blue darkening so it could allow the stars to shine. Blackfoot began to pad towards the swamp but stopped for a moment. He turned his head right to look at the forest on the west border, north of the camp. Of course, the trees were very thick in that direction, however through the silhouette of the countless branches light poured through the gaps. Blackfoot took a deep breath in and fixed his gaze ahead of him, back towards the swamp. He began to walk again, dragging himself closer to his destination. The previously bright green grass, shining under the sun’s light, was now a darker, less lively shade of green. It felt nice under Blackfoot’s paws, each blade flattening comfortably under his pads. As the sky continued to darken, he drew closer to an old twoleg fence, marking the end of the soft dirt and the start of the muddy swamp.
Image
xxxxxBlackfoot did not rush as he walked. In fact, he dreaded each moment closer to the time he would arrive. But he had to do it, he had to keep walking, to protect this place that was now his home. Blackfoot eventually came to the fence, the wood rotting and falling apart while the wire was on the edge of breaking, its grip on the wood loosening. He paused, staring at the still water and mud that lay past the fence. He then sighed, ducking down to crawl under the fence. Once past the fence, Blackfoot began to trot. The sun was nearly completely swallowed by the land and trees, meaning that he would have to hurry now. The water, unable to catch much light in its reflections, was dull and mixed with mud and half-drowned grass. It was a shade of gray under the nearly night sky, no stars out just yet to give the water any light. The mud was a dark brown, covering Blackfoot’s paws to the point where they were nearly invisible. The last of the signs of day were now gone, replaced by a pitch-black hanging above his head. New, gray clouds lay a dark sheet across the sky, blocking out any light the stars may try to use to reveal themselves. The air hung heavy, the heat from the day still trapped even after the hours of cool temperatures that have passed.
xxxxxBlackfoot knew he had arrived once the mud dried out to dirt, despite being in the swamp. The area was littered with rocks, a few small streams of water flowing through the tiny space. The oak trees rose far above his head, the branches allowing moonlight through should the clouds move away. The blanket of darkness, however, did not move but remained in its spot with clearly no intention of lifting. Not a single bird sung a last song, nor a single cricket chirp in effort to break the silence, which was cast ominously over the whole area. Blackfoot walked to the center of the area, sniffing the air for a few moments while looking around. It appeared that the other cat was late, as there were no fresh scents in the area. He sat down in a dry spot, beginning to wash the mud of his paws in nervous wait. The only sound that could be heard was his own tongue, swiping away the brown to reveal the white of his toes. Blackfoot continued to wait, grooming each one of his paws carefully until there was no sign of the mud left. A shiver went down his spine, a light yet cold breeze passing by. He jumped when a new set of paws made its way through the area. It was a heavy cat, one built more for head-on attacks rather than sneak attacks, something that the Cats of the Whispering Wood specialized in. Blackfoot stood up and turned to face the cat who had entered the clearing.

“Shadow,” The tom began, approaching Blackfoot. “I hope you’re willing to speak today?”
“I do not refuse to speak. I warn you, however, that using my loner name will bring up suspicion within my clan.” Blackfoot answered solemnly.
“I do not reside within your clan,” The tom replied. “And if you will speak, I’m sure you have information this time around. Do you have such a thing?”
Blackfoot met the brown tabby’s eyes. “Today I do not have such a thing, nor will I for a while. The clan is not having any difficulties other than lack of cats, which I’m positive you and your group are already very aware of.”
“Of course,” The tom said. “We shall wait, then, for when you are ready to speak.” He turned around and began to walk off but stopped. “And next moon, please ensure you arrive on time.” He finished before leaving.

xxxxxBlackfoot’s way back was miserable. The woods were silent and uncomfortable to him, despite living his recent life under these very same trees. He no longer found the grass nice, but instead he found it irritating and painful. Before returning to camp, Blackfoot found and captured an unlucky mouse, one that was searching for food late at night. Carrying the mouse with him, he brought it back to the camp to work with his original excuse. The camp was silent, every cat but Blackfoot asleep. Placing the mouse on the kill pile, he made his way to his nest, curling up. It was only one moon until the next time he would have to repeat this whole day and continue doing so as long as he was forced to work with the rogues.

Cat Name: Otterdusk
Clan: breezeclan
Rank: warrior

Gender: tom
Age: 23 moons

Prompt:
The quiet waves washed up the sandy beach as Otterdusk sat quietly. His tail was wrapped nicely around his front paws, keeping them warm from the cool midnight air. Clouds rolled, revealing and hiding the stars of Silverpelt. The mountains high in the back, guarding the way he came. A small amount of trees lined the mountains, hiding his entrance and exit even more. The grass swayed in the salty breeze, making Otterdusk shiver. The once golden sand was now a dark yellow brown from the darkened sky. This place wasn't nearly as beautiful during the day. He looked up and sighed quietly. His secret beach spot wouldn't be much of a secret if he decided to bring and show Crabreed. This was supposed to be his spot. Even if he had a best friend, who was maybe a crush, who he wanted to show. On the nights he needs to think, he goes out. He has ever since he was an apprentice, so even when he wasn't supposed to.

His mind drifted from nervousness to worry. Would Crabreed tell some other cat about his private cove? Would he tell Swiftstar that he's been breaking the warrior code ever since he was 7 moons old? Would Crabreed even want to be his friend anymore? He flicked his tail from side to side, taking deep breathes to calm himself. He had one shot with Crab and he wasn't about to mess it up. Ever since his eyes had met Crab's, he knew he felt something. He never thought he'd feel this was about anyone. But here he was, mooning over another cat. He closed his eyes, and stood up, sniffing the air. The salty breeze of the sea wind calmed his mind quickly, one of the many reasons he loved it here. This part of the territory was sacred to him. Nobody ever went here, so it was scent free, making the smells of nature more open. It was a long walk through the mountains, but Otterdusk didn't mind. The salty sea and quiet breeze were far from worth it.

Image

Ever since the night of Otterdusk's contemplating, Crabreed's presence made him uneasy. His crush on him wasn't just some crush anymore, and his secret spot wasn't just some kit's hideaway anymore. That Green Leaf night, he would show Crabreed. Whatever he may be getting himself into, he knew it was right. He couldn't hold his feeling back anymore, and telling Crab at his favorite spot would be better than telling him in camp. His mind was quick to thinking of the worst possible outcomes of this choice, making him breath in and out rapidly. The Green Leaf sun shone down on his black pelt, making him sweat. This was going to be a long day.

--

Otterdusk's day was filled with nervousness and constantly avoiding Crabreed. Just before all the cats headed off into their dens that night, Crabreed bounded up to Otterdusk with a concerned and stern look on his face.

"Otterdusk, what's been up with you?" He snapped in a low whisper, "You've never acted like this. I know you've been avoiding me, so what's up?" His voice changed from angry to hurt.

Otterdusk froze, trying to think of the best way to bring up his situation, "I...I uh.." He stuttered out.

His legs shook under him, making it hard not to topple over. His eyes darted around, trying not to look at Crabreed. His tail swished back and forth rapidly.

Crabreed stared at him impatiently, "Otterdusk!" He growled.

Otterdusk knew Crabreed had slight anger issues, and decided to tell him before he made anything worse, "Follow me." He sighed.

His legs stopped shaking as he started walking towards the camp exit. He turned and saw Crabreed still standing where he was, an angry confused look on his face.

"Are you coming or what?" He chuckled out.

Crabreed shook his head in disapproval but follow him anyways. He skipped up to he could be closer to him instead of way in the back.

"It's a long walk, but it's worth it." Otterdusk turned to his friend.

Crabreed only nodded, letting Otterdusk take the lead as they bounded out of camp and up towards the mountains. The grass squished under their paws as they walked quietly. Neither of them said a word while walking to Otterdusk's secret spot. The silence and each others presence made them both relaxed. Otterdusk pushed through a small valley, Crabreed closely trailing behind. When they reached the trees leading to his secret spot, Otterdusk turned.

"Here we are. Before I show you this, you have to promise me this spot stays between us. Alright?" He said in a low whisper.

Crabreed just looked at him funny and smiled, nodding his head slowly. Otterdusk raised an eyebrow before entering the hollow.

"Wow.." Crabreed said, looking around.

"Isn't it cool?" Otterdusk smiled, before sitting down sheepishly, "The real reason I wanted to bring you here, is well.." He trailed off.

Crabreed sat down in front of him, enjoying the cool air and salty breeze, "Yes?"

"Crabreed," Otterdusk said, lowering his head, "I really like you. And I mean really, really like you. I have ever since we met each other. And if this changes things between us, good or bad, I don't care. I just...Thought you should know.." He blushed, averting his gaze from Crabreed's.

Crabreed laughed, "Yea, I know."

Otterdusk's head shot up, face red, "What?!"

Crabreed only laughed even more as he stood up and walked towards Otterdusk. His laughing died down as he nuzzled Otterdusk's cheek, "I knew the whole time. You're really bad at hiding it. But yea, I like you too."

He sat down next to Otterdusk, leaning into him, "Glad you finally told me." He smiled.

"Yea, I'm glad I finally told you too."

Cat Name: Nightwhisker
Clan: AuroraClan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: She-cat
Age: 27 moons

Prompt: Nightwhisker sat at the top of one of the craggy ledges surrounding camp. She had just had a loud and painful argument with her brother Falconsky. The two cats had just lost their parents and Falconsky wanted Nightwhisker to stop being a warrior and become a permanent queen. The she-cat understood her brother's fear of losing another loved one but she was a warrior through and through. And an excellent fighter as well. She would never stop, not until she eventually joined the elder's den. Nightwhisker sighed as she looked down at the camp. She was avoiding Falconsky, ad did not want to see him. The she-cat's eyes narrowed as she spotted the tom searching the camp for her. She quickly looked around for an escape route to avoid having to talk to him and listen to more reasons why she should become a queen. It was as she was frantically looking around that she noticed a small path leading down the wall of the ledge. It looked steep, but manageable. Nightwhisker blinked curiously and carefully began to make her way down. She soon came to a small cavern within the walls of camp.

Nightwhisker entered the cavern and was surprised to find it was the size of a small den. She explored the den out of curiosity and found a small patch of crystals. It was beautiful. She sat, observing them as she took deep breaths, finally calming down from her argument. It was then that she heard paw-steps above her and realized Falconsky was on top of the ledge looking for her. Nightwhisker was thankful that she had found a hiding place as she was not ready to talk just yet. She stood silently, waiting for the sound of fading paw-steps to reach her ears as her brother left to look elsewhere. Once it was safe, Nightwhisker sighed in relief and poked her head out. The she-cat gasped as she saw the view from her hidden cave. The night sky was stretched out above her without any trees to block her sight. The stars shimmered brightly, surrounded by a sea of dark blue. Nightwhisker sat down and enjoyed the view. This cavern was the perfect place to get away when she needed to calm down or to be alone.
