A bird cocks its head, before taking off into the massive cananopy of jungle surroudnign it. It flies higher as the sun peeks out over the mountains surrounding the lush valley, and its wings are warm. The bird circles, then alights on the branch it started on and waits.
Suddenly, the heavy beat of a drum thuds through the forest, causing peaceful animals to bolt in all directions. The bird flies in the air, circling above the trees before heading to a different part of the forest.
The beat continues, now joined by a low, rhythmic chanting. In a clearing, the sun rises with the sounds of peoples voices mingling with the cries of animals. The grass, laden with dew, is stamped down with thousands footprints and paw prints as thousands of men and woman, all carrying or accompanied by an animal, slowly march in rows and rows. Both animal and human march in circles, leaving a small space in the middle of the clearing untouched.
The chanting stops, and the forest hums with anticipation.
"I call, and the animals answer.'' A female voice sings out, her voice as clear and pure as an icy cold bubbling stream.
The people echo her as one voice.
"I breathe, and the forest speaks." Another line, this one from a male voice, just as pure.
The people return his call, but now they resume their low chanting. Three people make their way in a line through the crowd. They go all the way into the very center of the ring of people, then make a ring together. Bright feathers and pelts adorn their bodies, and red, blue, and yellow paint stains their face in colorful streaks. They all wear the symbols of different animals:
A boy carries a fox pelt over his shoulders as he growls and moves low to the floor, stamping his feet.
The next girl roars, and shakes the golden mane draped around her neck.
The last girl, tall and lithe, spreads her arms above her head and spins on her toes to reveal hundreds of crane feathers attached to a long cloak cascading down from her arms and back.
The people closest to the ring nod in approval. This ceremony seldom happens, simply due to the lack of children in the village. But when there are more then one teenager in the vilage, the people and animals come together to make sure they get their animals. When a child turns 15, that is the moment when they become an adult. And as an adult, they are able to be accompanied by a spirit guide: An animal reflecting that child's spirit that comes out of the forest and stays with that individual their entire life. When spirit guides die, their person's soul is said to die as well, and are unable to continue functioning. Today two girls and one boy are becoming adults, and today their animals will find them.
However, there is one exception. The last girl is from the Crane Tribe, and group of nomads who belong to no village. She is simply joining in the ceremony due to being unable to do it on her own. It is not a surprise what she will get because every other
