This kal is getting into the Halloween spirit! Design a mask for them, and explain in 500 words or less, why this particular mask. The mask must be drawn, but can be commissioned as long as it's based on your ideas.

Floating orbs of flame really seemed to be the finishing touch Valerian had needed for his mask – it provided the spooky aura so heavily demanded around this time of year… and it covered up the tangled mess of mistakes he’d formerly attempted to embellish the mask with.

Ever the hopeless romantic, Valerian had originally taken inspiration from a fairy tale. One wherein the lover of the story was only themselves at the stroke of midnight but a sheep at any other time. Valerian had poured over descriptions of the lover, and his mind whirled around thoughts of a mane of flowers and gold adornments catching the moonlight. He had no plans of making a simple mask. Rather, he wanted one that would transform at exactly the stroke of midnight into something breathtaking, just as the sheep in the story had.

Perhaps he should have expected a couple of mishaps while he attempted to bring his imagination to life, but Valerian had only puttered on ignorantly. He’d made sure to make the head of the sheep in soft, sturdy material – something comfortable as he knew he wouldn’t be taking it off. It had looked plain when he’d finished its basic structure, but it needed to be if he wanted the flowers to stand out. With careful stitches to elegant wefts of curled yarn, Valerian had built up the bulk of the sheep’s coat.

It was soft to the touch, a dark purple to match the rest of his fur, and each ringlet was gingerly wrapped around a silver-lined flower bud, specially crafted for him from a local self-proclaimed wizard. Valerian had finished the mask a day early, just so that he would have a chance to look at the finished product without the crowing of jealous onlookers. But midnight came and went, and the mask had remained simplistically boring, drawing the kalon’s attention up towards the only eye-catching piece of it: his own disappointed gaze.

A sinking stone of regret had settled in Valerian’s stomach, thoughts buzzing around what he was supposed to do now. He didn’t have the time to try and figure out what had gone wrong with the flower buds, and halfway through sewing open blossoms into the sheep’s wool, the kalon realized they just didn’t have the same effect the magical ones would have had. They looked lazy, despite the effort he had put in to try and fix his mask.

Defeated, Valerian had ripped the flowers away from the bottom of the mask, tearing out clumps of yarn until he was left with the ragged remnants of curls. Valerian presumed the local wizard could set him up with something that would turn his mask back into a show-stopper, but the kalon hated that it wouldn’t be the result of any of his own efforts.

In the end, the flames were pretty and, ever the romantic, Valerian wondered if his own face would work as the lover’s when he described his mask’s inspiration to someone else.
