Howls (Lupus noctua) are a hybrid between the Eastern Wolf (Canis lupus lycaon) and the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus). These creatures have been long thought to be mythical and were not considered to be an actual species until a few live juvenile howls were discovered in Canada in 2018.

The true origin of these animals is still unknown, though some believe they were part of a scientific research program on transgenic organisms. Howls, while they are usually feathered from the chest down, are mammalian, and give birth to live young. Howls do possess wings, though only a few howls are capable of flying. As such, their wings serve little purpose other than to protect a howl’s back. Some researchers suggest that their wings may also serve a role in courtship.

Because of their docility, researchers have begun a breeding program as part of their efforts to learn more about these animals in captivity. The general public are allowed to go through a selection process before they are given the opportunity to adopt a howl.

▶ ʙᴀᴄᴋɢʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ɪɴғᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴ

Howls, being a newly discovered species, are completely new to scientists and researchers. In a bid to find out more about these animals, a breeding program is currently being established. This breeding program aims to help spread awareness of the species and allow adults and children alike to get to know this animal better. The breeding program will start once at least 30 howls have been adopted.

▶ʙʀᴇᴇᴅɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʜᴏᴡʟ

- Before breeding a howl, check that it is an adult and not a juvenile. Juvenile howls cannot be bred with other howls.
- You must wait at least a week after adopting your howl before breeding.
- In order to breed your howl, both you and the other howl's owner must send proof of the agreement to the nursery artist.
- Howlettes will take about a week before they are ready, and this time may sometimes stretch out to 2 weeks.
- Howls are expected to have litters of 1-4 howlettes.
- After each breeding, your howl will have to wait at least 2 weeks before they can be bred again.
- Each howl can be bred a maximum of 3 times, after which, the howl will no longer be able to produce offspring.
- Same-sex pairs can also be bred the same way that heterosexual howl pairings are bred.
- Howlettes will be weaned when they are 4 days old, after which they, now juveniles, can be either adopted or kept by their owners.
- Juvenile howls can be grown into adults after a period of a week, after which, they can also be bred.
