Charlie loved no-cost activities as a kid, who didn't? For most Kalon's, it meant that they had more pocket money to spend. Not for Charlie, however.
She grew up in a small home, her room no bigger than a closet. Her parents barely had enough money to pay bills. The mail wasn't something for her to look forward to anymore, more of a dread-filled chore she did. Charlie was small but understood every word on the letters that arrived addressed to her parents. Trying to stop herself from being consumed with dread, Charlie set out to find something to distract her mind with.
Taking a walk around her town, it seemed there was barely anything for her that didn't cost money until she saw something glinting in the sun down by the stream.
A Beryl, a sign.
Charlie ran towards it, pulling it out of the riverbank and shoving it into her pocket. She promised herself she would come back to the stream tomorrow, the dark of the night quickly taking ahold of her town. Getting home, Charlie found some string and fashioned the beryl into a necklace for herself. Day after day she went back down to the stream, collecting stones with makeshift tools. Charlie swore to never tell her parents for as long as she lived. While Charlie loved them, she feared that they would take away her stones and sell them.
That was years ago, and everything has changed. Charlie has her own home now, nothing like the house she grew up as a kid in, her own life. She still has the necklace, though the string is torn and battered from years of wear, it's still hers.
And she never did tell her parents about the stones and streams.
