“Be very careful with it,” her father warned as he placed the sparkling gem in Kaylee’s paws. “It’s very rare.”
Kaylee widened her eyes, examining the gem he had given her. It’s cool surface felt good in the warm heat of the summer, and it shimmered in the rays of the sun, making it look even more beautiful.
“Thank you, Daddy,” She breathed. “It’s the best birthday present ever!” She pulled her father into a hug, a wide smile stretched across her face.
“I’m glad you like it,” Her father gave a smile of his own. “It’s called pezzottaite. Ancient legends say it was used as the centerpiece in headdresses of tribal chieftesses. Maybe you can be a chieftess too,” he gave her a grin.
”Ooh!” Kaylee giggled. “Does that mean I get to tell you what to do, Daddy?”
Her father chuckled. “I guess so, chieftess Kaylee,” he said in a deep voice, bowing down slightly.
Kaylee laughed in delight as she watched. Once her father was up off the ground she took another good look at the gift he had given her- her beautiful gem that she would keep forever and ever.
“Are there more gems like this, Daddy? Like, not pezza-pez-“ she stumbled over the unfamiliar word, frowning at the gem.
“Pezzottaite,” her father gently reminded her. “And yes, there are lots of other gems. Maybe next year for your birthday I’ll try and find another gem for you- what do you think?”
Kaylee nodded excitedly, though her gaze was still locked on the shining pink gem she was holding.
“Why don’t we go inside so you can look at your gem without the heat of the sun on you?” Her father suggested, leading her that way.
“Okay,” Kaylee mumbled, her gem shining as they left.
