Matthew looked up from his bed, listening to the screaming in the hallway that seemed to be far too loud.
"It's the navy! You know what that's like! Talk him out of it!" a female voice cried.
The shadow flit dipped his head again to now look at the blue wristlet he had on, stained faintly with blood. his father had given it to him as a reward for even thinking about joining the navy, but now it seemed he was trying to convince him to shoot the idea. The navy was looked down on in his family despite the heavy military presence- his father was a retired military commander's flit.
"Let him live his life without you getting in the way! He is brave and strong, and I wouldn't be surprised if the kid could walk on water!" the voice of his father rang through his mind even after he stopped speaking.. and Matthew realized a silence had fallen.
"Do you believe in him?" a much softer voice spoke, a defeated one.
"I believe he is one of the few patriots willing to do something, and we're no better than damned if we stop him."

Matthew turned to look at his father, who wore a straight face. The light in the room seemed brighter than it was and the movement was far too dizzying. The flit was off to war. His mother could be heard sobbing in another room which only greatened the tension within the small entryway, where Matthew wore a satchel and his wristlet.
"Thank you for believing in me," The flit spoke proudly- and loud enough for his mother to hear. The crying ceased, "you built me to be who I am, and I don't regret a moment of it."
Matthew's father's gaze seemed to falter when he heard foot steps coming up behind him as his mother came into view. Hew shadows seemed to be weak, and barely held her weight. The two ignored her. Matthew looked to his father again, his ears raised just enough to show his pride in his decision.
"Good luck," his father rumbled and rose a paw to his temple, saluting his son and puffing his chest out which swelled with too many emotions to comprehend. Matthew's eyes widened faintly but his paw was already rising to his head as well. He saluted his father in return, the slightest of smiles appearing on his maw.
"Same to you."
Matthew turned and left, but as he walked away he heard his mother cry out again, the wails rhythmatic as though she were hitting something in anger and sorrow, and when the flit heard his father shush her he heard the rhythm stop. xxx^(v.2 x)^

The blaring of a horn made Matthew's head turn sharply towards the front of the massive ship he was aboard. Again?
He shook his body up, seeming exhausted as he hunched over a bit. He knew he would hate to wake early, but the water seemed so terrifying at night. When it was dark. The humans were shuffling around, some whispering and some talking. Until a siren started blaring.
"Grab him! Toss him over! Don't forget what happened last time!"
Last time, yes. There was a last time, and it was when Matthew had a panic attack and nearly mauled a crew member. They had not forgotten.
The men in the uniforms came rushing, and Matthew was dragged out by his from limbs and throat. Blinding lights from the ship shone down as he was forced over the side of the ship, and the harsh water burned into his skin, but the shock hid him from the pain.
The water swirled around him and a sinking feeling came upon the flit, his paws reaching towards the sky - or what he thought was the sky - as he fell the opposite way. Within moments he was above water with the sea beneath his paws. The shadows of his limbs kept him afloat, and flattened the water he now stood on.
Matthew looked up with soaking wet fur to the dark silhouettes of the crew who had watched him fall. All he could hear was someone yell what seemed to be 'grab him.'
Little did the flit know he would become one of the most important crew members by dawn. The rumbling ship would pulse through his veins and he would persevere beyond any flit had before within the Navy.
