Ever since Scoria was a Viscling, she’s had a certain attachment to the dirt beneath her paws.
Her strange sensitivity towards harsh stomps – or even worse, earthquakes – baffled her parents, but her case had no reasoning or solution. The rest of her senses were shown to be far duller than touch, particularly the partial blindness residing in her eyes. Scoria found comfort in locating everything around her with the vibrations they create with movement – however, should one stop moving, she will have trouble finding them again. In a way, it works much like a bat’s echolocation but in more of a reverse sense.
She can somewhat still see with her eyes, though, but details are lost in the process. The world around her is generally a blurry mess. It wasn’t much of an issue early on in her life thanks to her parents, but when it came to being more independent her hinderance became more prominent. No longer able to rely on family for support, Scoria was forced to manage on her own. She pondered for some time, attempting to figure out a way to improve her vision – only making it worse – or pinpoint object locations through other means. The future was only looking bleaker as time went on, failed attempts after failed attempts.
A dramatic event in her life proved there was another way, just waiting to be discovered.
On one such morning, the sky was a brilliant shade of light blue like always, except a pillar of smoke was rising from the direction of the sea. As she observed from a high branch in an aged Sycamore tree, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease and anxiety. It appeared far too potent to be coming from any forest fire, and upon further inspection was coming from a landmass on the sea. Living in one of the thickest patches of the forest meant she didn’t know what lied beyond the water, but for right now she feared it.
When she grounded herself again, a pattern of short waves surged beneath her feet, startling her. She hadn’t felt them through the branches and bark of the tree, so the sudden vibrations triggered a panicked response from her. Something was happening, and she could sense it clearly. Before Scoria could escape back up into the tree, a sharper wave shook her and the world around her. An explosive sound toppled her over, causing her to lie on the ground in shock. Everything spun around her, blurring her already poor vision and making her heart race.
Several Viscets burst through the trees, appearing to be running from the source of the sound in a frenzy. She was too terrified to move, curling up into a ball beneath the Sycamore and completely missing their presence. Some of them took quick note of her distraction and quickly snuck over, noticing her possessions littered around the trunk of the tree. Taking a knowing glance at each other, a pair of Viscets snatched as much as they could in their arms and took off. In one instance, all of Scoria’s food stash for the week, as well as her favorite objects, were gone. By the time she recovered from her freak-out, they were long gone, leaving her distraught and confused.
Several minutes went by before she could begin to figure out what happened or how to follow the thieves. Their scent was somewhat present still but was obscured by other strange smells she couldn’t quite pinpoint the source of. Attempting to follow them, she carefully made her way over gnarled roots and past thick trunks. Scoria wasn’t as terrible as she used to be with traversing the forest, but food was difficult to come by, so she had no choice but to attempt to retrieve her belongings.
After a while, she happened across a strange part of the forest she never had been to before. Immediately she knew there were many creatures there, picking up on their waves. She gulped and fearfully remained alert.
Next thing she knew, she was being approached by a taller, sharper figure and a somewhat shorter one. Several other Viscets gathered. “Is this who you stole from?” He grumbled.

Without knowing it, Scoria had happened upon Gnatho’s force. At first, she wanted nothing more than to be given her supplies back. Bargaining with him was no easy task, and after a while, he was instead striking her a better deal. “Join us, and we’ll help you get what you want. Or… have fun staying out of our way.” His smooth voice dripped with venom, and she winced. She weighed her options quickly – Gnatho was clear about his impatience. It was difficult enough to live where she was and joining them may not be such a bad idea. What would she get out of it, though?
While she was thinking, the Viscet spoke from next to him, with a clear feminine voice. “We aren’t usually ones to take pity on others, consider your choices wisely.”
She swallowed hard. “I’ll join you. Under the condition that you help me regain all of my eyesight again.” She stared in the direction of their voices, however unable to make sure eye contact. Gnatho and Vallory shared a look, taking a while before the male Viscet would answer. It made Scoria feel sick, almost immediately wishing to take back her answer. He replied right as she opened her jaws to speak.
“Of course.” He said cheerfully, full of empty promises. “Come right this way.”
He placed his tail gently on her back in a mock comforting fashion, slightly making her jump as she hadn’t expected it. She naively appreciated it and followed them further into the territory. Her sensitivity to the movements in the ground would help him develop techniques for him and his army to sneak up on others better. Though she wanted nothing more than to leave after only two months passed, it was far too risky to attempt to survive alone.
