Conquering People to Find Friends

Though Lachina's coat had been brushed to perfection and she held a smartly-wrapped gift in her paws, she still quivered in fear. She stood in front of a shack with a spacious yard. Lachina always felt quite shy when faced with crowds, and this noisy, crowded birthday party was no exception. Still, she was determined not to disappoint the birthday boy that had so thoughtfully invited her. Lachina took a deep breath and scratched at the door.
Almost immediately, the birthday viscet's parent opened the door and greeted Lachina with a welcoming smile. Lachina responded by muttering a shy, but earnest thanks for the invitation and scurried past to find a convenient place in the backyard to hide out without attracting too much attention.
A table covered with a tie-dye tablecloth housed an already-impressive pile of gifts, while another, equally colorful tablecloth on the other end of the yard adorned the snack table. Between them, viscets talked and giggled as they partook in an array of games and activities. Lachina trotted across the grass and carefully set her wrapped box down with the others on the gift table. Then, a thought occurred to her. It was so crazy, that it just might work!

The tie-dye tablecloth was a little oversized, and reached nearly all the way to the grass. If she could mange to slip underneath without being seen, it would make the perfect hiding place. Lachina glanced about, checking to see if anyone was looking in her direction. The party guests all seemed far too occupied with food and games to notice her. So, she slipped underneath and disappeared.

"This is my spot."

To her great astonishment, this hiding spot was already occupied! A pale viscet with a blank expression stared back at her, seemingly unaffected by the intrusion. It was all so surprising that Lachina could only sit there, dumbstruck.
"Get your own."
Another few words from the stranger snapped Lachina out of it.
"S-sorry...", she stuttered in a hushed tone, still afraid of being discovered. "It's just... There are so many people...
"There's people here too.", the light-colored viscet responded calmly.
"This is different. It's just you and me..."
"So, there's here with me or there with them."
Lachina's eyes lit up at the possibilities implied in the other viscet's words.
"I can stay? You don't mind?"
The pale viscet shook her head solemnly, as if making a vow.
"My name's Lachina. What's yours?"
"Ljos."

It seemed that someone noticed hushed voices from underneath the table, because just then, a curious viscet lifted up the edge of the tablecloth and poked their head underneath. They had been found! Lachina felt a cold jolt in her chest, but almost simultaneously, she felt a warm paw in her own. Ljos grabbed her new friend's hand and the two of them dashed away before they could be caught. Maybe neither of them were able to enjoy the birthday party, but they had discovered something even better: each other.
