"Free flowers!'' Lotus called, his voice unheard in the crowded mess of the farmer's market. Kalons of all shapes and sizes wandered though the dirt streets of his country town, eyes bright with curiosity and wonder. It was lotus's favorite time of year, early spring, when birds sung their first songs, the forest was lush and green, and flowers brightened the lawn of his small cottage. The air was fresh, and the farmer's market had brought more Kalons than ever before. There was only one thing ruining the day: the relentless heat. The sun beat down on the small town with impossible godly strength, the temperature rising higher every minute.
"Free flowers!" he called out again, exasperation and exhaustion clung to his words like a vine to a tree. Lotus turned around to look at his wares. To the left, dozens of mums, roses, Irises, and daises. To the right, his favorite flowers sat, with orchids, marigolds, beeblossom, and of course, a single lotus flower. Dread washed over him, and tears swelled in his already watery eyes. His flowers had begun to wilt. "Free flowers?" he whispered, leaning against his wooden booth. He sunk to the dirt floor, rubbing his eyes and nose with a single trembling paw.
"Hello?" called a voice from the other side of the booth. "Hello?" Locus quickly collected himself and forced a smile.
"Sorry Miss, All of our flowers are in rather poor shap-" His words abruptly cut off, noticing the tin watering can he held with her paws.
"I couldn't help but notice your flowers," she said, smiling. "My booth is in the shade, maybe we could move them over?" Locus nodded eagerly, reaching down and grabbing the lotus flower. "I'll lead the way," She purred, reaching down to grab a few wilting flowers. Her booth was small, but had a large umbrella providing shade. Her table was covered in jars of thick, golden honey with a small cartoon bee on the front.
The Kalon soon came back, holding as many pots of flowers that she could carry. Lotus reached down for a pot that he had brought. Thanks for saving my flowers," he said, looking around at his revived plants.
"Oh! No problem! I could tell how much you love gardening, and I'd hate to see something you worked so hard on go to waste!"
Lotus smiled, shuffling awkwardly on his feet. Here," he murmured, raising up the single pale pink Lotus flower. "Free flowers!"
