The Most Dangerous Thing Kansi Ever Did

As much as Kansi loved the spooky aesthetics of Halloween, she loved the candy even more. No matter what time of year it was, it was always a good time for sweets. Halloween allowed Kansi to amass an impressive stash of candies, but she was known to get a bit desperate during the leaner times of the year. Once, she even resorted to theft.

Kansi had swiped a piece or two of candy in her day, but this was different. She had been watching the general store, and it was from these observations that she knew candy could be found within. Humans entered empty-handed and returned with a bag or two of miscellaneous items. The most noteworthy of these were the occasional chocolate bar or pack of gum that they munched on as they returned to their cars. Her plan was simple: get in, grab as many candies as possible, and get out. Surely no one would notice a wild viscet pinching armloads of candies, right?
Convinced that her plan was foolproof, Kansi emerged from the bushes and crept across the street towards the general store with an eager smirk. The caped viscet attracted instant attention, but Kansi failed to notice. She could already feel her skull buzzing from her future sugar rush. Soon enough, she found herself confidently shoving the front door open and slipping inside the store quickly so as not to catch her tail as the door swung shut behind her. Kansi was greeted by shocked stares from the patrons inside the general store. Of course, Kansi continued to remain willfully ignorant of all that and headed straight for the candy section, where she proceeded to gather every candy bar her greedy paws could reach. It took several minutes to grab an adequate amount, especially since she kept dropping them everywhere. This was plenty of time for the store clerk to cautiously speak into the phone behind the counter, pleading for a police car or two to come and remove the wild animal from the store before it did any more damage.
Meanwhile, Kansi had finally collected enough goods to satisfy her sweet tooth and turned back towards the door. Seeing as her forelimbs were now occupied with holding her prize, she instead lowered her head, pressed her skull against the door, and applied pressure. It did not open.
"What?! But I pushed it open before...", she exclaimed to herself, though her words were nothing more than feral grumbling to the terrified humans huddled in a corner next to the refrigerated section.
Kansi pushed harder. She had no idea that a door which is pushed to open must be pulled if one wishes to exit in the opposite direction.
"Why won't it open?!"
The furry thief grew frustrated and kicked at the door while she balanced on her other hind paw. Her claws left scratches in the door, but it was no use. Now she was worried. Was she ever going to get back out again?
Just as Kansi was starting to panic, the door swung open. A uniformed human with a rope in hand entered, followed by two more. The first human gestured to the other two, who nodded in response. Then the trio began to slowly approach Kansi, whose bravado had completely left. She felt a tight knot in the pit of her stomach as the reality of her mistake sunk in. Her grip on her treasured prize loosened, and a few chocolates fell to the floor as she backed away from the officers. The center one kicked the candy out of the way as he approached.
That was when Kansi realized what was happening. These three humans were going to take her candy. The candy she had worked so hard to steal! Kansi let out a disdainful snort and lashed her tail menacingly as she clutched her candy closer to her chest. A loud crash resonated from somewhere behind her and she reflexively looked over her shoulder to see one of the uniformed humans sprawled against a disheveled shelf of chips. At the same moment that it dawned on her that she must have accidentally hit one of the humans with her tail, she felt an unexpected impact to her right shoulder. Most of the candy fell to the ground as Kansi stumbled sideways. A second human saw an opportunity and wrapped her arms around the viscet's flank. All three of them soon wrestled a kicking and screaming Kansi to the ground. As they attempted to immobilize her with the rope. Kansi crashed into the base of a shelf and it came toppling down on her with a resounding thud. Then, she went still.

When Kansi woke up, she found herself in a secure pen in a building she did not recognize. Her head throbbed, and the glaring artificial lights made the pain worse. Through squinting eyes, she examined her surroundings. The first thing she noticed was the soft bed of thoughtfully-provided blankets she was laying on. There was a stainless-steel bowl of water in the corner, and another bowl beside it, filled with chunks of chicken breast. Through the bars of her cage was a table, and atop it a familiar cape and collection of bottles.
"Ok. I am never stealing again.", Kansi groaned under her breath.
A wave of drowsiness overtook her, and Kansi slowly closed her eyelids to sleep off her mild head injury.

A week later, Kansi was released back into the wild several miles away from the site where she had tried to take things that did not belong to her. Fortunately, what was actually hers was returned to her. She found her possessions within the small horse trailer that she was transported back to freedom in. She was really quite lucky that she suffered no lasting effects from her escapade, but Kansi would always remember her most dangerous adventure.

The Nature of Kansi

Rules are not a very high priority for Kansi. Instead, she prefers to live her life by the simple code, "What feels good is good." Thus, Kansi is a viscet of simple pleasures, enjoying tasty treats, relaxing moments, good weather, festivals, and anything else that brings a bit of joy with it. Kansi can get carried away in her pursuits for enjoyment. That is not to say that Kansi will completely disregard all courtesy for the sake of simple pleasures, exactly. Any mischief the caped viscet gets into will at least be rationalized. For example, maybe Kansi did once break into a general store and try to steal all their delicious candy, but Kansi figured they had more than enough to share...
Typically, the damage Kansi causes is because she is so focused on her own wants that she forgets to consider the best interests of others. She is not a spiteful viscet, just a very independent one. A team player, she is not. To some, Kansi escapades are a liability, and they prefer to keep their distance from the "bad influence". Others admire Kansi carefree nature and enjoy how she throws caution to the wind, instead living in the moment and by her own rules.
Regardless of one's opinion on Kansi, most can agree that she might be a bit naive and foolhardy, but in the end, Kansi will always be a free spirit.

When a viscet leaves the realm of the living, the soul begins a long journey to the lonely island of judgement, and from there —- depending on choices made throughout their life -— will continue their journey either to the upper plain, or lower. Most viscets refer to those on the upper plain as angels, while those on the lower plain are the demons, but that's only half true. They're one in the same. The only difference being which deity they serve. Neither is the wrong decision; neither is the right decision.

The island is conveniently located in the dead center between both plains. It takes the same amount of time and effort for a soul to arrive at either one, but sometimes there are accidents; neither Tyramet nor Ugin can figure out what causes some souls to derail from the path given and end up somewhere unknown —- somewhere the two deities can no longer sense them. Both assume it has nothing to do with coincidence and everything to do with the corruption: a pure evil that was banished centuries ago, but has since made its ugly presence known in the form of a single parasite that quickly spread like a disease. If the corruption has anything to do with these lost souls, the entire continent, including the two separate plains could be in serious trouble.

Little do the deities know, the missing souls had nothing to do with the corruption. No, the parasite viscet known as Kaecilius wasn't plucking souls from the life stream itself and reworking them into something new and even more evil than himself as the two predicted. Instead, it was something as simple as thievery, and for nothing more than collection pieces.

Astaroth, a curious viscet with a bad case of kleptomania, managed to find her way through a small crack in reality itself and create a third path for souls to take after their judgement. It had happened during one of her adventures; she heard about a place near the portal to the lower plain where all sorts of ancient relics had been spotted. In her search, as she dug around the area, sniffing and scratching at everything she could get her grubby little paws on, she hadn't been all that careful. Unknowingly, the viscet broke what looked to be just an old relic, but was truly a means of protection for the lifestream. In breaking the relic, a third path was formed; a path that trickled right into the continent itself, which was something that was never supposed to happen. For those involved in the wellbeing of the lifestream, this was terrible news. For Miasma, this was better than finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Not like he knew what in the world was happening, of course; all he knew was the malevolent forest he called home was seeing more traffic than it had in years. Traffic in the form of small glowing orbs that Miasma captured and kept for himself. The orbs were the souls of those who found their way into the forest after the sun disappeared and the moon rose high in the sky. Once an unfamiliar viscet finds their way into that particular forest at night, there's no coming out. Once the light has been snuffed out by the moon, the forest takes on a life of its own. Cursed branches spring to life, trees shrill and howl along with the wind, the ground shakes and rattles, but perhaps the worst part of it all is when the trails either disappear or shift in order to lead a different way. At night, the trails normally lead back to the witch, Angrboda, and that's never a good thing.

Never.

Miasma takes pity on the lost souls who have left their bodies, and by luring them with the crystals and baubles hanging against his haunches, he brings them peace instead of allowing them to wander aimlessly in search of a closure they'll never reach.

Now, that sort of traffic was normal. A couple of orbs floating along a path every so often, but when the orbs started coming in waves, Miasma was ecstatic. Along with the crystals, he wore a cape that honestly was there just because it looked good on him, but what held the cape around his body was a different story. A brooch in the shape of a skull; a haunted object given to him by the witch herself. The skull was imbued with a spirit that wished for adventure; it never wanted to be lonely, and with Miasma, the spirit inside always had company. The brooch also harnessed the power to attract the other spirits in order for Miasma to speak with them and give them a final resting place with him.

The vials attached to his belt held the spirits who wished for adventure, while the crystal of deep purple held an uneasiness about it. That particular crystal was imbued with a source of pure evil; something the forests' keeper, Wendigo, had constantly attempted to take from him, and ultimately failed each time. Because of this reason in particular, Miasma felt it would be safest with him at all times instead of back in his small hovel where it was an easy target.

As the new spirits began to show up, Miasma could not only see, but he could feel the agitation and fear radiating from them. An interesting thing about spirits; even outside of a body they could still feel and understand what was going on around them. In an attempt to calm them and gain their trust, Miasma created a special powder made from collected herbs and a touch of magic. The powder was then placed into the brown sack that hung from his belt. He didn't need to do much, just keep the sack close by when attempting to gain the spirits' trust; the aura from the crushed herbs and magic was enough to show them he meant no harm.


Miasma has two very distinct sides to him, with a third that plays only a small role. In the presence of other viscets, he's cocky, arrogant, and all around unpleasant unless of course he takes a fancy to one of the viscets in question. Then he's cocky, arrogant, and charming in his own way. In the presence of only the spirits, he drops the facade and relaxes completely in their company. In order to speak with them, Miasma has to go into a deep sleep-like meditation, and to do that, he has to find an unadulterated zen within himself. Negative emotions aren't allowed to play any role within him if he expects to communicate with the spirits. It goes beyond need, however. He doesn't drop the act because he needs to, he does it because he wants to. The spirits are the only things he trusts within Wendigo's forest, so it's only obvious that he gives them all of him just as they do the same.

The third and least pleasant side to him is the swallowed down evil that festers in every living thing. Everyone is capable of evil, though most refuse to acknowledge it in fear it'll take over. Wendigo, the keeper of the forest, is able to manipulate and bring to light such evils from the depths of other viscets, and he wastes no time in doing so with Miasma. Thankfully, there's rarely a good chance for him to do so, but the times he has, it hasn't been pretty. Miasma's arrogance turns to spite. All of the good in him drains from his entire being and soon, he's Wendigo's evil puppet, completely ready and willing to do his bidding which normally involves attempting to harm the souls that Miasma has worked so hard to keep safe.

"There's something I want you to do." Wendigo's breathy voice travels against the thick fog. Normally, Miasma would have lunged in the direction of the voice in an attempt to tackle the antler'd viscet to the ground and incapacitate him, but this time was different. The metaphorical veil has already been placed over Miasma's eyes by Wendigo himself, now Miasma was under his control until the spell was broken, which in all honesty, didn't take very much. Miasma just needed a distraction.

"Yes, of course," his voice is hollow and monotone, "whatever you ask."

Wendigo doesn't reply though; Miasma knows already what is required of him. As if on cue, a spirit floats around Miasma's head, apparently unaware of what exactly is going on. The grin against the viscet's maw is that of a predator ready to strike, and the look in his eyes is completely devoid of any emotion whatsoever. The spirits are very intuitive, but unfortunately for this one, it realizes just a moment too late exactly what sort of trouble it's in. Miasma raises his paws in order to trap the glowing orb in what seems to be an invisible spider web. He's holding the spirit in thin air without actually touching it. In reality, he's merely draining the life force from the spirit itself. Doing so releases the power into the forest itself and strengthens the evil within.

He can hear the force inside of the orb screaming its own song, and that alone knocks him slightly out of his trance. Wendigo notices the intrusion and paces back a step, but keeps his eyes on Miasma. Once he's able to escape completely from the spell, Wendigo is no where to be found. All that's left is a damaged spirit and a very tired and angry Miasma.

Castle is Miasma's greatest friend. He exists within the brooch Miasma wears against his cloak, but he isn't living. Despite being nothing but a soul trapped within the brooch, Castle is able to provide company to Miasma, just as he does the same for him. The two aren't able to speak to one another unless Miasma goes into a meditative state, but Castle's presence is always known.

The first time Miasma spoke to Castle, the mood was dark, heavy, and all around horrible. The experience was unlike anything he had ever been through, but the feelings between the two were very strained. He soon learned that Castle had lost everything in life, and entered the forest on his own free will. With his family and friends lost during a remarkably terrible pillaging of his small village, he decided to make the trek into the forest in order to find out its terrible and hidden secrets. Without anyone back at home to miss him if something happened to him, he left without concern and when he found himself being overwhelmed by the entire forest itself, peace washed over his body like a healing wave. He accepted his fate, though was beyond disappointed when he realized, in the afterlife, he was unable to escape the forest and join his family on the ethereal plains.

His journey within the forest as a spirit was monotonous and filled him with nothing but anger and regret. Castle longed for the peace he felt before the forest took him from the land of the living, and he began to mourn for everything he had lost.

Until he met Miasma; then everything seemed to change for the better. The two, once Miasma accepted Castle's grief in death and made it his goal to help him, grew inseparable.

Before his life in the forest, Miasma was a very successful conman who posed as nothing more than a trader. He had an eye for shiny objects and black magic, and that's precisely how he came to own one of the continent's most dangerous artifacts. It doesn't have a name, or perhaps it does and there's just no one brave enough to say it. The purple, prism-shaped object is a container that holds a piece of the true evil of the continent: a small, nearly transparent parasite. The parasite can never be let out of the container or it will immediately take form and continue the work of its god, Kaecilius, spreading corruption and turning the most innocent viscets into beings of pure destruction.

Unfortunately, the container was still on Miasma when he found his way into the forest in search of more relics, and that's exactly why it never leaves him now. Wendigo wants the artifact in order to release the ultimate evils into the forest, so that he can use it for his own selfish reasons. Stronger magics, stronger potions, stronger spells. Everything, if the corruption happened to spread into the forest, would be stronger and far more volatile. The peaceful spirits would fall into a frenzy, the trees would come to life even in the daytime; they would be bloodthirsty.

Miasma couldn't see himself falling into the hands of the corruption; just the thought alone throws him into a panic. So, with his life, he's promised himself and the souls around him that the artifact would stay with him at all times. Anywhere else, Wendigo would find it. Miasma could find the greatest hiding spot, but Wendigo would be able to sniff it out without any effort at all, and that's just something Miasma can never allow.

prompt: (pick 1) Jackson was 16 years old. He was with his father, who was an explorer. He thought he was old enough to come with him on one of his adventures. They came to an island that had a gigantic volcano, taking up almost the whole island. It was nighttime and the viscets were exhausted. They went to sleep in the boat they took to get to the island. While Jackson's father was asleep in the boat, Jackson got out of the boat and swam to the island. He has never seen a real volcano up close before, and he wanted to check it out. When he tried to climb up the volcano, his paws slipped because it was very steep. He tried to climb for about 15 minutes and then he got an idea. His father brought some tools for in case they were going to climb a mountain. Jackson took his father's backpack and took out the items he needed for climbing. He tied the rope to his waist and climbed his way up to the top of the volcano. It was around 4:00 in the morning when Jackson got to the top of the volcano. He looked down into the hole, feeling the hot air on his face and gazing down at the magma. Before he knew it, he felt the volcano violently shaking. When he saw the magma rising, he jumped down from the volcano. Instead of falling into the water, he fell onto the ground, breaking his leg. His father was awake and saw his son laying on the ground. He was angry at him for doing something so dangerous. Lava was flowing down from the volcano rapidly, and despite the intense pain in his leg, Jackson limped into the water and kicked his way to the boat. There was a rescue helicopter flying above the island, and it flew down to rescue Jackson and his father. However, Jackson's father was nowhere to be seen. He was devoured by the burning lava before he could get away. The helicopter flew Jackson to the hospital where he was taken care of.
