Biggest Accomplishment & Biggest regret: survival of the storm, and losing her family.-----
"Momma," Mackeral mewed from her safe space, curled against the warm belly of the shecat who had birthed her 2 moons prior. "Will the storm hurt us?" Her round yellow eyes glittered in fear. Her mother leaned down, nuzzling Mackeral gently, her sweet breath soothing the small child.
"Don't worry, little ones," the queen curled her tail around Mackeral and her sister. "We've been through worse storms. The crew can handle it." But something like worry tinged her mew as she glanced out of their spot tucked away beneath the steps to the captain's quarters, out of the torrential rain. The humans rushed around, howling at each other to fix the rigging and bring supplies. The wind screamed in the ears of the three cats, and the queen curled tighter around her children to shelter them and their soft ears.
Mackeral whimpered, her whiskers trembling. "I'm scared."
"Hush, dearie...we'll be okay. The ancestors will watch over us." Her mother's words did little to quell the shekit's fears, and she pushed herself closer to her family.
A loud crack of lightening burst across the sky, shattering it into what seemed like pieces. Mackeral screamed, burying her face into the queen's belly. Her mother shushed her, worriedly looking out at the crew. They raced around like ants with a destroyed anthill, buckets clutched in their hairless paws. A glow towards the edge of the ship caused fear to slither into the mother's belly. The flames were beaten back by the sailors, and the glow faded. "Ancestors protect us," the queen whispered.
Minutes later, Mackeral was struggling in the raging water, her horrified mewls tearing from her jaws, the wind snatching them away before they reached sympathetic ears. The ship groaned in front of her, the two sides rent in half, slipping beneath the waves at an awkward angle. "Mom! Snapper!" She howled, her tears mixing into the salted water. A wave smashed into the kit, knocking her beneath the waves. She couldn't breathe. Her lungs burned as she struggled up to the surface. The kit choked on water, eddies and currents pushing her around and preventing her from reaching the precious oxygen her lungs so craved.
Her flailing claws found a large piece of wood, digging in by their own accord. Mackeral hauled herself onto the wood, shivering and coughing up water. The storm seemed to have subsided by now, clouds still gathered above. The rain had slowed to a dreary drizzle, and the waves had calmed. Mackeral couldn't see anything except water for miles in every direction. A sob built up in her chest, erupting into a large wail. The kit's chest heaved uncontrollably, screams of panic tearing from her jaws as she huddled on the pitiful plank. She couldn't handle the pure loneliness that enveloped her heart, stealing it away and bundling it into places where they should never go. She couldn't handle the thought that her sister was dead. That the kind sailors were dead. That the gentle captain who brought them fish was dead. That her mother was gone forever.
Mackeral's misery furled into a flag of rage. She stared up at the sky, her heart pounding as anger fueled her limbs. "I hate you!" She shrieked at the sky. "You abandoned us! You were supposed to protect us, and you let them...!" Her raw howls faded into sobs. "I trusted you." She heaved at her ancestors. "You let them die."
----
The sun beat down on the kit as she drifted along. It had been two days, and her throat ached for water. Her stomach felt as if a rat was tearing it apart from the inside. She had grown up on rich ship food and water whenever she needed it. Now, she had nothing. She lay limp on the floating plank. The water was calm and clear. She could see small fish flitting beneath her, but as soon as she leaned towards them, they hurried away. Mackeral sniffled, glancing up and looking at the horizon. Her eyes widened. "LAND!" She croaked. It was so close! Every fiber in her body yearned for the sand beneath her paws. She leaped off the plank, struggling to keep her head afloat as she wearily trudged to the small breaker island.
Relief gave way in her chest as she lay on the ground. It was odd--the kit had never been on dry land. The mainland was only about 20 feet away. She pulled herself to her paws, wobbly making her way across the minuscule isle. Mackeral slid into the water, dragging herself onto the new shore. She knew that she had to find a shelter. It was hot, and if she stayed outside, it wouldn't be good.
There...! Those rocks...! The kit hauled her way to the large cliff face, walking beside it and looking for a safe nook or cranny. Her muscles trembled as she climbed the rocks, her tired eyes looking for a sheltered area.
Soon, she reached the top, but failed to spot any nooks. Tears threatened to fill her gaze again. Her legs ached from exertion as she began to walk across the top of the cliff, heading towards the other side where she could leap down. Suddenly, her paw touched nothingness, and with a shriek the kit tumbled into empty air. She hit the ground with a loud thump, and her vision went black.
----
The kit opened her eyes slowly, searing pain hitting her like a monster. Her throat felt like it was torn open, and a sickly smell filled the air. Something sweet faintly tinged the awful stench. The kit croaked, and a colorful shecat turned, her large blue eyes glistening with worry. "Are you alright?"
The kit struggled to speak, little more than a ragged hiss of air emitting from her jaws. The adult shecat looked as if a thought suddenly struck her. "Wait, don't talk! Your neck is injured badly." Her eyebrows wrinkled in worry. "I'm no mjemase, so it may take a while to heal. You need to rest."
The kit was confused. Her head hurt. She remembered the scent of milk, the creaking of wood beneath her paws. She remembered rain, and fire, and being plunged into frigid water. The kit squeezed her eyes shut. Who was she? She remembered two other cats on the ship with her....her mother and sister, yes. Her mother and sister! Her gaze snapped open, and she struggled to her paws, gurgling in panic. She needed to find her family!
Petals fell from her neck and scattered across her paws, their blush pink coloration tinged with the dark red of blood. The kit gasped, her noise rasping. "Lay back down!" The grey and orange shecat ordered, gentling pressing the shekit back to the flower-filled nest she had been laying in. "Those flowers are preventing you from bleeding out. You have to stay down until it heals. I'll bring you some wet moss so you can drink something, but you really can't get up." Her gaze darkened, and she murmured to herself. "I can't lose another cat."
After she was satisfied with the kit's permission, she began to busy herself around the den. It was filled with flowers of all shapes and sizes, and light filtered in from above. The only opening to the outside was above the den, which could be reached from leaping off of an outcrop. It was quite beautiful. The kit had never seen anything like it. The shecat whisked her tail around her haunch as she organized the petals into unique patterns. "I'm Asphodelstar, by the way. I'm the kryesor of Luleclan. I'm the only cat in it, but soon we'll have more." She turned and blinked her glittering eyes at the kit. "You can stay for as long as you need. I think I'm going to call you..." She mused for a moment, her gaze flitting around the den, then centering on the petals clotting the kit's neck wound. "Verbenakit, after the flowers used to save your life." Asphodelstar nodded to herself, as if agreeing with her own decision.
Warmth spread to the kit's toetips.
Verbenakit...it fits. I think I'm going to like it here.... She snuggled into her nest, closing her eye and slipping into a relatively peaceful slumber. And thus, Asphodelstar was no longer the only cat living in Luleclan.
